I am so sick of the stupid ipod. I was hoping for mini or ibook updates.

Then you may as well wish for a G5 PowerBook. You ain't seeing *book updates until January. Maybe a speedbump in Sept. Woo hoo .00005% increase in performance.

Where's my iBook :'(... Dell's website is getting more attractive everyday, especially with all the flyers they send me. I can get a laptop for £299 which is more powerful than Apple's current iBook at £699. Um... Apple... do something about this.

They will. Next year. Some of you guys still don't get it. The *Book is dead right now. It’s not going anywhere. If you are really lucky they can overclock the G4 one more time. Joy even hotter *books.

If you can't wait til next year get a Dell. Enjoy it. don't bitch when suspend mode breaks. Don't bitch when the firewall keeps you from doing what you want. Don't bitch when the next service pack that is force fed to your computer makes it BSOD because you have some peripheral that is causing problems with the video card driver or something. Don’t bitch when you get a shock from your Dell on your wrists because they are poorly grounded. (We have 8 out of 20 Latitudes that had this behavior when we received them.) In short go get your cheap Dell but don’t come complaining when you have problems.

I agree with you. I actually liked the 3G design better too. That's why I wasn't in a rush to replace my stolen 3G with a 4G. If I still had it, I'd wait for a better update before replacing it. Unfortunately my 3G is gone, so I've got to decide on something now.
I don't agree at all. I hated those 4 buttons that lined the top of the wheel. After having about 4 ipods before I got a 3rd gen, I was used to how the built-in buttons on the outer rim of the wheel were made so much sense and easy-to-remember. The Left (PREVIOUS SONG); The Right (NEXT SONG); Top (MENU) and Bottom (PAUSE/PLAY) --- the 3rd Generation really was hard to remember and I always had to drag the thing out of my pocket to do something rather than "by feel" as I had on Generations 1 and 2. Also, those buttons were sooooo sensitive that it wasn't even funny. I would PAUSE and PLAY with a single tap (or what I thought was a single tap) of the button. Very frustrating to say the least.

The 4th Gen setup definitely brought back the easier configuaration.

The updates...

What's up with a 30 MB iPod update, that is larger than iTunes!?!

Speaking of updates, what exactly are they for. Is it just to add that podcast thing under "Music"? That is a whole number jump (1.1-1.2)? I have an now obsolete 20GB iPod w/ Click Wheel and I don't notice anything different as far as software. I guess it does sync up with iTunes 4.9 now...ooh!!! I wish apple would list that on their site ( http://www.apple.com/ipod/download )

Also, since the 4G iPods are almost to the end of their little lifespan, does anyone remember that Newsweek thing in July, '04 and how Steve Jobs said there are some "hidden features" in these iPods. What happened. Are those the photos??

Finally, was the charging time for the photos always 5 hours as it is now. I know my iPod is 4.

applerocks

EDIT Just realized that there was already a thread on my first question :D

hahahaha I like the enthusiasm! I wouldn't call the iBooks dead, just in extended sleep :) !

What I want...

...is a Mac that's exactly like a Dell but, you know, a Mac.

And an iPod without the clickwheel and with a really complicated interface that allows me remix my dj mixes on the fly.

And a female iBot.

[EDIT] Actually I just has a serious thought. Do you know how much b*tching and moaning there will be when the Intel Macs actually come out and they don't have the processors and video cards people want? With standardized hardware, every single one of Apple's decisions will be dissected and criticized. Price will undoubtedly be an enormous issue. Once uncontrovertible side-by-side comparisons become possible, people will REALLY complain about how much more expensive a Mac is than a Dell. 'Cause let's face it, Dell has economies of scale Apple can never match. They don't have to develop an operating system, they get Windows for virtually nothing.

Of Course.

I think this is just becuause on Saturday I went out and spent $450 on the 60gb model. I had been waiting for some update to the iPod for quite a while, and just finally broke down and bought it. Of course, now it's $50 cheaper.

This always happens to me.

Kinda like, if I wash & wax the car, it will rain the next day.

Eh, whatever.

The iPod is fine, but come on already, update the computers. Does Apple even still make computers?

Anyone know if the 60 gig is one or two layer?

Two layer. The largest 1.8in single layer drive that I'm aware of is 30GB. Toshiba have a 40GB single layer and 80GB dual layer scheduled for the third quarter. Hopefully Apple will be buying a shed load of those.

They also have a promotion when you get a new mac you get a new ipod :)
Ah-ha - hence the expiration of the $100 mail-in rebate for buying a Mac for education. That promo ended yesterday.

Good thing I bought my new iMac during the $100 discount promo. I'd much rather have cash in hand then an iPod (that I'd then have to turn around and sell). I was considering waiting till the next Apple promo (since the 27th was a Monday, I figured they would do something different on Tuesday) since I was briefly considering buying an iBook instead of a desktop system (and as others have pointed out, the iBooks are in sore need of an update), but I'm really glad I didn't.

Is it me, or are the iPods getting a little too over-the-top? I mean, unless we're talking a Newton redux or the upcoming Motorola iTunes phone, doesn't any iPod of any generation do one thing best: store lots of music and play it? Am I missing something here? Surely the generation of your iPod doesn't affect the songs stored on it. And yes, if I didn't already own one, this might be another purchasing incentive, I suppose.

This caught me a little by surprise - I was really thinking that there's be iBook updates today...

*sigh*

Maybe iPods are how Apple is bankrolling the Intel switch.

<offtopic>How do you get over the inevitable micro-gap between playing them? I'd find a DJ whose mix included little spaces between songs really annoying...</offtopic>

Call 'em up - I seem to recall Apple having some sort of price-protection thingy, but don't know if it applies to the iPods... Still, it's worth haggling with customer service to see if you can get your $50 back.

Hey, I hear Apple makes computers too - I can't seem to find any information about this on their home page. Can someone help me? ;)

Wait a minute.

What about people who bought iPods last week...

what in the hell are they going to do? Can they get a refund on their iPod and get a new model?

Geez people.... I'm getting depressed reading all the negative comments. Was this a case of people getting their hopes up about a big announcement today, only to be disappointed?

1) This merge of the iPod opens up an opportunity for continued innovation and evolution of the iPod line. It's a good thing.

2) iTunes 4.9 was announced! That's big news.

3) There's something new coming around July 7th.

So, take a deep breath and quit holding Apple to your rediculously high standards. To do things right takes time. They can't do it all right now. That would just spell disaster.

Boo.

Apple needed to deliver something wonderful and new (5th generation iPod, anyone?) not just repackage and diminish the same 'ol same 'ol.

They didn't even keep the 30GB iPod photo! That should have just become the new $299 iPod. What a rip.

I know you're just kidding, but Apple's home page highlights what is new, and it's not exactly hard to find what you're looking for. Try Dell's website for a different experience.

how long is apple going to offer the u2 ipod? It was all fun and cool the first month or so, but I just feel like they need to get rid of it. Have it live its life on ebay as a collectable.

I completely agree. The idea of "updating" this iPod is crazy. I was thinking that when it was released Apple would have different custom iPods for different bands every 6 months or so. Now it just seems like a permanent shrine to U2 which is needless to say.... a little wierd.

.

The 7448 might allow for overclocking to 2Ghz and has a 200Mhz FSB (woah ;-) ) and is in production in October so I'd expect one craptastic update to the PB and iBook line then.

I gave up waiting for new iBooks a couple of weeks ago; I bought an 867MHz TiBook instead for £600. Airport, Bluetooth, 60GB, 768MB, 32MB VRAM, Combo, 15" Widescreen, PC Card, DVI, 1" thick and much more stylish. The only thing that isn't equal or better than the current iBooks is the CPU. Plus it's like £100 cheaper.

Been there, done that (as a matter of fact, just this morning for our nonprofit) - frankly, I think Apple and Dell are both overdue for a major rework of their home pages.

so....many..choices.... aww!!
