ok, so the iPod Photo 30gb I bought last week is not redundant. I could have saved a few bucks by buying the new 20gb (colour) iPod but considering my iTunes library is currently 16gb I'm not too worrried. 30gb is the perfect size for me.

I still don't see the point of 60gb. I suppose it could be used as a backup drive but I have an external drive already.

Recording? When?

Based on Adam Curry's recent comments regarding a forthcoming iPod with integrated recording capabilities, I'm surprised Apple didn’t release an iPod that included this feature. Would have fit in well with the release of iTunes 4.9’s integrated Podcasting feature.

As for size comparison:
The still-for-sale U2 iPod measures: 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.57" and weighs 5.9 ounces - NOTE: now includes a color screen.
The new color 20 GB: 4.1 x 2.4 x0.63" and weighs 5.9 ounces
The new color 60 GB: 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.75 (same size as the iPod Photo) and weighs 6.4 ounces (same weight as iPod Photo).

Hmmm, I was just taking a look at this at the Apple site. So I'm wondering, why is the U2 ipod slightly thinner than the regular 20GB? Doesn't really make sense to me, since I thought they were the same except the color of the casing.

Actually...

i'd call em 5g iPods. theres not much further they can go now, unless its video but he always said people dont have the content on their computers, so i guess from now on they'll just get cheaper and more hhd space.

as an owner of a 30GB iPod Photo, i always knew they would drop the 'photo' tag and it would just become the next iPod, but i cant understand why theyve dropped the 30GB version. its perfect, the 20GB isnt enough, and the 60GB is too thick. im well happy with mine tho so its alright.

Actually, I think adding wireless will happen before video. Color is nice, but adding some kind of wireless and remote control features would be far more useful and allow you to use the iPod in new ways.

I don't see video in the current design as being possible at all. They would have to come out with a new iPod with a different screen and form factor for video. That little 2" square just wouldn't cut it. Something similar to the PSP would be my guess.

True, the 60 GB iPod would be a good backup drive, but it would also be good for storing movies as well. I think that's the primary use for the 60 GB iPod, since back when it was called the iPod Photo.

Personally after my old iPod died when it took a 1 foot fall onto a carpet, I won't be buying any more iPod's until they have a decent shock protection system built in (a bit like the new Sony player). It won't be fool proof I know, but another line of defense for my hundreds of dollars investment would be nice...

Oh and a changeable battery (ala the sony as well)...

I dont ask for much...

ew that sucks . ive dropped my 3G ipod onto TILE from my top bunk like 3 times .. nothin .. my thing seems to be a tank . .

Yes, nice move by Apple to simplify range, not sure about the "Podcasting policing policy" re submissions of Podcasts to the iTunes censors, will have to wait and see on this one.

Wow... for my fellow iPod lovers in the UK, the 20GB colour iPod is £209 and the 60GB is only £299!
Yeah, it's better, but a Mac mini starts at £339 over here, so that's only £40 more than an UK 60GB iPod...
I reckon those iPod's might have a bit more trimming left in them yet!

Size difference?

What are the size differences between these "new" iPods, and yesterday's "old" iPods? Are they the same size as the iPod photo? How about battery life? Has that changed?

Miffed

I was all pumped about the new Podcasting features, because I listen to lots of podcasts on my 3g. First off any podcasts that you subscribe to will not show up in smart playlists. Second the latest iPod update, that adds some kind of podcast management, is not applicable for my 3g. I guess they did not study Podcast subscribers very well. This sucks for me. :(

So does this mean that this is it for 2005 in terms of "new" iPods????
What a waste. I just bought a B&W iPod in February.

Podcasting on iPod

You've just confirmed what I was afraid of. So what CAN I do with my 3G iPod? I guess I can add a manual Podcasts folder, but if it updates on iTunes will it update on iPod the next time I plug it in?

Did Apple change its mind about having a separate line of color/photo models or was this the plan all along?

I assume Apple is following a long-range development and marketing plan, and this is the latest phase of that plan, but I find it odd that they would use a distinct label like "iPod photo" only temporarily and than backtrack to drop the name. I would have been less surprised if they dropped the unadorned "iPod" name and let all iPods be either shuffle, mini, or photo.

I am slightly confused about the sizes of these iPods... as someone has pointed out, the U2 iPod [Color Display] is physically smaller than the new 20gb. Why is that? Also, if you click the 'View Full Comparison Chart' link on the online store's iPod page, the dimensions are all screwed up, claiming that the 20gb is .63" deep and that the U2 and 60gb are both .57" deep! Any chance that the new 60gb has been reduced in size and the website is just muddled?

now to decide if i should buy a 60 gig with my discount...the big gap in the sizes is kind of odd though. 20 gig..and then the 60 gig

Not so odd perhaps when they add the movie playing version and you need more storage.

Basically they crammed the colour 20Gb in the smaller U2 enclosure (firewire cable as well if I'm right) for almost the same price as a White ipod. The 20Gb white is actually the same physical size as the 60Gb....

That things gonna rattle......

Wha happen to da Firewire???

 I found this in the tech specs

"USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 (with FireWire cable, sold separately); Composite video (with AV cable, sold separately) and audio through headphone jack or line out on the iPod Dock"

No firewire??!!! My 867 powerbook dosen't have usb 2. I mean I already have a collection of firewire cords for my current pod but does this mean Apple is moving away from firewire like the PeeCees?

I'll buy the pod anyway but hmmmm

Makes sense to call it the 5G, since the entire iPod line now comes with color screens.

The 4G line came with the click wheels.

The 3G line came with touch buttons and dock port.

The 2G line came with scroll wheels.

The 1G line came with mechanical scroll wheel.

Only built-in USB? Why would Apple do this, what would the difference be, I'm not sure if I understand...
