that thing looks pretty freaking awesome for freehand drawing/painting stuff.

other than that though, where's the advantage? notice the CAD drawings in the commercials aren't being created.. instead, they're being marked up on, noted, highlighted, etc.. guarantee the actual CAD work was done on a more traditional interface.

i'm not saying this computer isn't potentially leading into paradigm shifts for creative content creations, just that it's certainly not there right now as far as i can gather unless we're strictly talking painting/drawing.
Actually, it has a digital ruler but I haven't found anything about angles. For a first effort, it definitely shows Microsoft is going in a good direction for creatives.

CAD?
Autodesk and others are going to be all over Surface Studio, the Dial and HoloLens.
It's going to be huge.
Really, really massive.

Got rid of the chime so "Pro" users wouldn't bust through the 16GB Memory cap too quickly.
Stay tuned.
Sadly. I have to say MS is stepping up ALOT...and i'm sure the next apple CEO would step it up as well.

I'm hoping Apple will step up their game, too.
But I don't think it's going to happen until one or two things happen.

1. Apple spins off the computer business to someone who's interested
in making it world class again with a full line up of up to date devices.

2. Tim, Phil, Jony and Eduardo stumble into an Andreas fault chasm outside One Infinite Loop.

for clarity, i'm not saying you're wrong.. not at all.. and i also believe we are seeing hints today at things to come tmmr..

but again, as with the other videos you've posted, they aren't actually creating the models with these technologies.. the models didn't just appear out of nowhere.. someone did all the work in a traditional setting (and btw, i use that exact application being shown in this video.. i model in rhino but use autodesk's fusion360 for CAM and rendering).. all we're seeing in these videos is how people are viewing and in some cases, interacting with the content after it's been created..

there's is a huge chasm between viewing the content with these technologies and creating the content with these technologies.. there's a gigantic list of technical hurdles in every aspect which must be overcome prior to bridging this gap..
that's the distinction i'm attempting to make here.. nothing as yet radically changes the way a CAD user goes about their daily work.

Actually, it has a digital ruler but I haven't found anything about angles. For a first effort, it definitely shows Microsoft is going in a good direction for creatives.

again.. a ruler is for measuring content after it's been created.. you can do stuff like that today, and have been able to for quite some time on an iPhone.. it's when you need to create a line at 37' 2-1/2" when the technical problem arises with strictly touch screen interface.

also, i'd like to add that no single company is going to change the way we work in a radical fashion.. even the guy you all love to hate, timmy, recognizes AR as being a core technology..

fighting apple vs the world is pretty shortsighted in regards to this.. apple can't do it, startups can't do it, autodesk can't do it, microsoft can't do it.. everybody has to do it.

If you want to run AutoCAD on the Studio you could just run it like a regular PC with the mouse and keyboard. But the touch screen, pen and dial would all be a bonus during the various stages of a design. I could see someone making conceptual sketches with the pen and then modeling the object in AutoCAD, Maya etc. Later the dial and pen could be used for putting the presentation together (editing etc).

Pretty damn impressive. If they ever made a standalone screen that would plug into a standard PC they would sell a gazillion of them.

yep, i can see this as being a plausible way(s) to incorporate the msStudio into a cad workflow.

If there isn't an update by the time spring or even late summer rolls around, it's fair to presume the Pro is dead. Long live the Mac Pro!

You sound like Donald Trump there.

Make the Mac Pro great again.

Recognition and participation are poles apart.
If talking about innovation were money the Timinator would be worth triillions.
Oh, wait.

You see, Tim thinks AR is "profound".
Satya gives us HoloLens.
The Timinator gives us PokemonGo on a phone and an Emojibook Pro.

I don't hate Tim, I despise what he has turned Apple into.
Like Monkey Boy he has milked his predecessor's work
and made trillions of dollars. You can only flog that horse
so long before you mortally wound it.

I just want Tim and the three stooges to leave and buy the Lakers
so they and Monkey Boy can go at it on the court.

is 'monkey boy' j.ive?
if so, are you sure s.jobs didn't milk jony's work?

(i personally don't think either milked the other and instead had a sweet partnership going on.. Ive would of left had he been getting run over or even reigned in.. Jobs would of been sort of screwed without him or someone very much like him.)

edit- oh wait.. is monkey boy phil schiller?

If Apple won't release new or updated Mac Pro workstations... they should just license MacOS to any company who wants to sell an appropriate system. Or sell a license to anyone who wants to build a system. This is getting ridiculous.

Hell... Apple could charge $1,000 for a copy of MacOS and I think people would pay it if they could build their own system.

And before anyone says "Apple makes money from selling hardware..."

Guess what... Apple makes ZERO DOLLARS if someone buys a Dell or HP workstation instead of a Mac Pro.

Monkey Boy is Ballmer.
