The single CPU 6 core 3.33 is now at least £600 cheaper in the UK. Kind of tempting. I am also tempted to just be done with it.

IMO this isn't enough of an upgrade to even reset the Buyer's Guide tracker for the Mac Pro. Not even Thunderbolt? Really?

Just looks like a final spec bump before they kill the line completely.

:D

LMAO! Meanwhile, I am still making meaningless money with my meaningless, insignificant and obsolete Hex Westmere 2010 Mac Pro.

I'm turning on CNN right now to monitor the rash of suicides that is sure to break out...

:D

Disappointing does not adequately describe my thoughts. Guess I'll hang on to my 2008 MP and upgrade the memory and graphics.

Imagine what Apple could do if they put the same energy into a Mac Pro that they did in the new MBP with retina display. A shame ...

"it's the fastest Mac ever"

In case you're not aware, you can "Talk to a Specialist now. Get answers before you buy. Call 1-800-MY-APPLE to talk with a knowledgeable Specialist."

AWESOME!

Took the words out of my mouth. Something is fishy. And not making me happy.

I'd almost say it's a placeholder release for a redesign, but I'm not confident in that, and I don't know if I can take any more of the "it's dead, it's not dead" bickering.

They certainly aren't afraid to kill machines. The 17" Macbook Pro just got killed today.

The Mac Pro looks like it's in the same place as the iPod Classic ... ...

Prices are better though, so my 2010 hex just took a beating on the second hand market. Pissed off about graphics cards though.

Apple Insider mistakenly headlines "New Mac Pros with E5 Xeons". Sheesh...

----------

The "Now what?" threads take on new urgency.

It's either a last attempt to move the remaining stocks before they kill it, or they are lowering the prices whilst they figure out how to get Thunderbolt onto Sandy Bridge Xeons. At this point in time I am inclined to believe the former, even though this morning I was vehemently arguing for the latter.

i hope your right. I'm super tired of speculation. I wonder if it is a half baked attempt to see if people are still interested in the Mac Pro - give it a bump and see if sales pick up? Doomed to backfire of course, like fcpx

I'm being amused by the fact i can get a 'new' MP (with edu discount) for less than one of the refurbs on the uk store. The former has twice the ram too!.

Apple doesn't have that much stock built up though. They only keep a week of stock for their machines.

They could shut down production any time they wanted and not have much to clear out, which is why this makes no sense.

Maybe the Mac Pro engineers are just drunk?

how about all the parts in the factory? This could be a spin down....

Pessimistic people said the Mac Pro was to be cancelled!

Optimistic people said a new Mac Pro was coming; just waiting for Intel!

Somehow Apple proved both groups wrong.

What if they're working on a redesign which isn't ready yet but they were forced to upgrade the CPU's as Intel stopped making the 2010 MP CPU's? Make any sense?

In my mind, we're probably going one of three places:

1) The Mac Pro is about to get redesigned: Apple intends on keeping the Mac Pro around and it just needs something to remind us it's still there while it works on the new Mac Pro.

2) We're in a similar spot to the "classic" Macbook Pro: Apple is going to merge us into a new class of pro desktop, possibly an iMac Pro or Mac Mini Pro, and it just needs more time/needs to keep the machine around for the transition.

3) We're in the exactly same spot as the "classic" Macbook Pro: Just like the Mac Pro, the classic Macbook Pro also got minor upgrades. It could be that Apple intends the new Macbook Pro as a replacement for both the Mac Pro and Macbook Pro. To be honest, it's not a horrible solution as the dual Thunderbolt ports provide a lot of connectivity and make up for the lack of internal expandability, but not enough to use a pro GPU. 4 cores is also rather slim. They could have something better up their sleeve next year for people transitioning from Mac Pros in that respect.

Obviously they plan on cancelling the MP after they sell the stock.

You're dreaming all 3 counts. It's done. We need to figure out how to move on from here.

No because the CPU's in the new "updated" models are exactly the same. Just different clock speed versions of what was available all along.

I concede I am now in the probably not ever going to happen camp more than I was yesterday. Not final until official EOL but as close as you can probably get.

Raid

Waiting for months to see what would happen today, slightly disappointed.

They do not have a Raid Card option in the store configuration anymore. For a moment I thought "would they include onboard raid?"

I called Apple, and no, it does have onboard raid. They just took the Raid option out of the configurator. You can still purchase it separately.

Good times

yes, first post, but I have been lurking for years, and daily for the last couple months. Thank you for all the informative posts.

(I apologize if this has already been mentioned)
