The fact that the news sites read: "Apple quietly updates the Mac Pro lineup" makes it sound like something "new" happened. People who are not tuned in will not get it.

Boy, some of the comments in this thread . . . . . Sorry but I am no longer able to be optimistic about any of this.

In my mind, we're probably going one of three places:

1) The Mac Pro is about to get redesigned: Apple intends on keeping the Mac Pro around and it just needs something to remind us it's still there while it works on the new Mac Pro.

2) We're in a similar spot to the "classic" Macbook Pro: Apple is going to merge us into a new class of pro desktop, possibly an iMac Pro or Mac Mini Pro, and it just needs more time/needs to keep the machine around for the transition.

3) We're in the exactly same spot as the "classic" Macbook Pro: Just like the Mac Pro, the classic Macbook Pro also got minor upgrades. It could be that Apple intends the new Macbook Pro as a replacement for both the Mac Pro and Macbook Pro. To be honest, it's not a horrible solution as the dual Thunderbolt ports provide a lot of connectivity and make up for the lack of internal expandability, but not enough to use a pro GPU. 4 cores is also rather slim. They could have something better up their sleeve next year for people transitioning from Mac Pros in that respect.

Except the new MacBook Pro got good updates, USB 3, Ivy bridge, new GPU etc.

What did the Mac Pro get (apart from a slightly changed CPU).

And speaking of the classic MBP, where's the 17" gone to?

This is sad. I was going to replace an Xserve with a new Mac Pro and connect it to a new Thunderbolt RAID. It never would have occurred to me that the new Mac Pros wouldn't have Thunderbolt ports. Time to make new plans.

Is it too much to ask for these a*sholes to make an official announcement on the future of the product?!?!?

It's dead, they killed it.

Which is why I think it's suspicious they also didn't kill the Mac Pro if they want it gone.
too much stock left and lame attempt to appease us which will backfire obviously.

apparently yes and almost 18,000 signatures couldn't get it done either.

CAN SOMEONE EDIT THE TITLE OF THIS THREAD TO INSERT "NOT"?

You really think they have more Mac Pro stock than 17" Macbook Pro stock? I don't.

Parts maybe and I do think it may have been a very lame attempt to appease the pros. Very very lame.....

I'm really just shell shocked over this.

If I understand it correctly, Apple does not keep much stock and they basically lead the market with something stupid like an average of 5 days before they turn ALL of their stock around. In other words, everything they receive in stores on Monday is gone by Friday. This is of course is an average across all products and some products will move faster than others.

Right, that was my understanding as well.

So the question is... if they only have 5 days of Mac Pro stock, then wtf just happened?

Maybe Thunderbolt is causing them issues.

Just saw the graphics benchmarks for the "New Mac Pro" on Apple's site, I'm impressed!

Seriously, the Radeon 4890 2 GB that I bought second-hand two years ago is better than the 5770 1 GB (and it loves the ACD 27" that I use with my PC) that this "pro workstation" has...

This seems more likely to indicate that the Mac Pro got a death sentence a while back and someone came down with "last minute" reprieve to commute the sentence. In the mean time, R&D grown down to halt and Apple has nothing to ship for quite a while.

At this point wouldn't be surprised it wasn't earliest late November or 2013 before anything happens.

2) We're in a similar spot to the "classic" Macbook Pro: Apple is going to merge us into a new class of pro desktop, possibly an iMac Pro or Mac Mini Pro, and it just needs more time/needs to keep the machine around for the transition.

Not. Because in the other case the "new" and old Macbook Pro are out. There is no "new" here. Perhaps when the new iMac drops it would be more clear, but right now this is really bad. This is extremely indicative that weren't even trying. This speed bump is probably meant to last 5-9 months. This is a "the dog ate my homework can I get an extension" move.

Apple had time. Gobs of time to get a new vision into place.

3) We're in the exactly same spot as the "classic" Macbook Pro: Just like the Mac Pro, the classic Macbook Pro also got minor upgrades.

The classic MBP model got a major upgrade. The HD4000 on the 13" are a significant step up. The CPUs are a step up; not a speed bump.

The GPU move to GT650M is the same GPU as the "retina" MBP. Again a significant jump over last years GPU's.

CPU and GPU wise the "retina" MBP has nothing on them. Nothing. If you need to use Ethernet and FW800 everyday they are a much better solution. If need to carry 1TB of storage and not put the price into the over $3K zone ... a much better solution. [ the "quarter terabyte" SSD quite expensive. ]

It could be that Apple intends the new Macbook Pro as a replacement for both the Mac Pro and Macbook Pro.

What? A laptop replace a desktop. Please. You must have drank a gallon of Cupertino kool-aid for this even as an "alternative" option. Maybe the iMac as a replacement for the Mac Pro single package in some contexts.

Right now the "Retina" MBP is clearly a replacement for what Apple dropped; the 17" MBP. Very similar price range. More pixels in a smaller package so it is portable. Can see a whole 1080p image on screen in FCPX so "in the field" minor cuts/edits can be done on set just like they were with the MBP 17"

Throw in a T-Tap if want to display on a reference monitor at full size. Or just plug into the "new" HDMI port.

The only "replace" Mac Pro here is where someone has put the Mac Pro in a portable rack and hauled 80-90 lbs of gear around on set. The old MBP 17" with TB was doing some that already anyway in computationally lightweight contexts.

XXXX knows what happened. :D

The biggest problem is that there really isn't even a so-so alternative without serious compromises. I really am at a loss.

I guess there is no way to make sense out of this. Xeon W3565 were made in 09! They must be drinking their own kool-aid if they think we are ok with this! cmon guys, i've bought all the entree's - where is the main course?!! it's like dating someone who won't put out!

I'll have to see what the imacs do. When do you think they will drop?

With the introduction of a new laptop line up, it seems that Apple are prepared to shake up the existing product lines.

With the lack of an iMac update, I'm now thinking that the iMac and Mac Pro lines may merge somehow. As someone on the thread has already said, an iMac Pro ?

If you were prepared to saccrifice some of the thin-ness of an existing iMac for a thicker pro verson, then you could potentially stick a larger GPU in there ( potentially desktop class? )

And speaking of the classic MBP, where's the 17" gone to?

"He's dead Jim!". Replaced in price and in some functionality (e.g., looking at high pixel count photography/video ) by the 'new MBP 15 with retina' .

As an uncropped/scaled 1080p video viewer, it does about as good if not better job than the MBP 17".

That's the only slim glimmer of positive news. If Apple wanted the Mac Pro dead it would be dead. It isn't so it could still be revised and aligned for the future.

Apple has updated the 17" at a later time before, but they always left the old model dangling around. It is gone from the store and website as a product now. The MBP model number is still 3. Instead of 13" , 15", 17" it is 13" , 15" , 15" HiDPI (or 15" R ) .
