In my mind, we're probably going one of three places:
1) The Mac Pro is about to get redesigned: Apple intends on keeping the Mac Pro around and it just needs something to remind us it's still there while it works on the new Mac Pro.
This seems more likely to indicate that the Mac Pro got a death sentence a while back and someone came down with "last minute" reprieve to commute the sentence. In the mean time, R&D grown down to halt and Apple has nothing to ship for quite a while.
At this point wouldn't be surprised it wasn't earliest late November or 2013 before anything happens.
2) We're in a similar spot to the "classic" Macbook Pro: Apple is going to merge us into a new class of pro desktop, possibly an iMac Pro or Mac Mini Pro, and it just needs more time/needs to keep the machine around for the transition.
Not. Because in the other case the "new"
and old Macbook Pro are out. There is no "new" here. Perhaps when the new iMac drops it would be more clear, but right now this is really bad. This is extremely indicative that weren't even trying. This speed bump is probably meant to last 5-9 months. This is a "the dog ate my homework can I get an extension" move.
Apple
had time. Gobs of time to get a new vision into place.
3) We're in the exactly same spot as the "classic" Macbook Pro: Just like the Mac Pro, the classic Macbook Pro also got minor upgrades.
The classic MBP model got a major upgrade. The HD4000 on the 13" are a significant step up. The CPUs are a step up; not a speed bump.
The GPU move to GT650M is the same GPU as the "retina" MBP. Again a significant jump over last years GPU's.
CPU and GPU wise the "retina" MBP has nothing on them. Nothing. If you need to use Ethernet and FW800 everyday they are a much better solution. If need to carry 1TB of storage and not put the price into the over $3K zone ... a much better solution. [ the "quarter terabyte" SSD quite expensive. ]
It could be that Apple intends the new Macbook Pro as a replacement for both the Mac Pro and Macbook Pro.
What? A laptop replace a desktop. Please. You must have drank a gallon of Cupertino kool-aid for this even as an "alternative" option. Maybe the iMac as a replacement for the Mac Pro single package in some contexts.
Right now the "Retina" MBP is clearly a replacement for what Apple dropped; the 17" MBP. Very similar price range. More pixels in a smaller package so it is portable. Can see a whole 1080p image on screen in FCPX so "in the field" minor cuts/edits can be done on set just like they were with the MBP 17"
Throw in a
T-Tap if want to display on a reference monitor at full size. Or just plug into the "new" HDMI port.
The only "replace" Mac Pro here is where someone has put the Mac Pro in a portable rack and hauled 80-90 lbs of gear around on set. The old MBP 17" with TB was doing some that already anyway in computationally lightweight contexts.
