if none come out in say, the next month, how many of you guys would cave and get a current gen? i am trying to start a business and obv dont want to start it on old tech so i will wait as long as i can.

I am contemplating Hackintosh with OC'd Westmere (watercooled) from cyberpowerpc (about $4k with watercooled NVidia 480GTX SLI) versus Dell T7500 with dual 6-cores (I'll wait for a 20-30% off coupon, about $5K without decent graphics).
I just ordered a Dell 3008 monitor with the 20% small business discount coupon.

>Hackintosh
>not building it yourself

way to defeat the whole purpose of a hackintosh.

Well - only about 15 hours or so to learn if May 18 is the date. If not - the wheel spinning continues for May 25 or June 1 or WWDC or

I'm thinking of ordering a new MP on 5/25 - that gives me two weeks to see if anything comes out of WWDC or not.

The thought of buying and then returning and having to set up yet another MP is yuk - but may have to be done as work assignments are going to be on the line shortly.

I just walked into Apple store in Santa B. I asked the first rep that approached if he had any word on MP update. The rep was clueless on the MP, in fact, he tried to convince me that "it" had been updated only a month ago. Obviously the sales teams are sooooooo focused on the laptop and ipad lines as to be confused when a question on the MP comes in. Sigh, to any other firm, the MP line would be a priority, to Apple, it seems to be the dreggs.

No, he was an example of your typical salesman. It has nothing to do with the sales teams being focused on the iPad, etc. He was trying to get you to walk out the door today with an outdated, currently overpriced machine.

I'm probably completely wrong, but you never know. ;)

What a tragedy. I would have reported him to his supervisor, showed them the Apple store site and pointed out the lack of a "new" button next to the Mac Pro, and also lack of support document for the "early 2010/mid 2010 Mac Pro" in the Apple support section of the site.

Unbelievable.

It's been awhile since I've seen it (here's one article on it; EE Times), and there's the likelyhood that the real cost will vary from the announcement information.

That article states that the transciever chip (converter of electrons to protons) by itself costs $10. That is not the lightpeak chip. Note it says in article:
Intel itself is supplying the controller chip that interfaces devices to the electrical side of the Ensphere chip.

"We had to work closely with Intel to meet its specifications for the electrical interface to their own controller chip.."

That 'controller chip' is LP. Not the laser. There is going to be another real and substantive cost in hardware that can multiplex/demultiplex several didn't protocols into a single LP data stream. If the controller chip does USB +Video + PCI + etc. not sure how that controller ends up being cheaper than one that just does one of those. Still have to buy multiple IP to do each single one.

Again from the article
Intel's controller will concentrate the data from devices using different protocols into a single stream, route it from the optical fiber to the right device, then split off the data intended for a particular device when the stream arrives at its destination.

Light Peak is in part is a I/O router. A router is much more than the physical ports you connect it through.

I don't recall information on the cabling, but I wouldn't expect it to be high either. Otherwise it could slow or even prevent the adoption rate.

Intel tried to float USB 3.0 as being fiber based. The word was that the periphal folks pushed back due to increased costs. I don't see how Light Peak is going to be cheaper than the USB 3.0 fiber solution was.

snip.....................

Actually, that's a pretty decent price. I'm willing the bet the real cost of that baby would be 1E100 higher.

Of course there's multiple components to it. But I had recalled that the entire component count on the board wasn't to be terribly expensive ($10), and figured that "cost creep" would push it to say the $15 mark max for what's needed on the main boards (per port).

The tech isn't simple, but the costs are expected to be controlled via mass production. We'll have to wait and see, but they should have a realistic pricing model by now. I've just not seen anything newer.

If you spot a more recent article on the financials from this year, I'd appreciate it. :) It would be interesting to see if they were able to get the other components such as the transcievers within estimated cost, particularly with the processing involved.

Bridge chips would be needed in the device, pushing it's cost a bit.

As per cabling, I've seen nothing on the financial aspect. But for it to take off, it needs to be cheap enough that consumers will be willing to take the plunge. Even with early adopters, as there'll still be a limit for those users as well. I just don't see users going for say $50 cables, when they can do a search, and see that a pair of TOSLINK's can be had for under $10 (no shipping) on eBay or other sources if they look hard enough. They won't be able to tell the difference in what it takes to produce them IMO (cost differences in manufacturing processes).

Would it be possible to take an 8 core 2009 MP (with the xeon e5520s) and put a couple of e5620s in it? Are they pin-for-pin compatible?

No. Use the "Search" button for more information. ;)

Actually, I did. Nothing came up. Google searches state they are the same socket. Since the 5620s are a die shrink of the 5520, I would think it would work. But, just in case, I decided to ask here.

Perhaps you could provide a link to a forum on the topic? Nothing comes up in the Forum Search on the subject.

And another date passes and the Mac Pro users continue to being treated like mushrooms (kept in the dark and fed ********).

June date is again ANOTHER rumor...July, August, September, AMD rebuild or complete end of line - we all buy iMacs and iPads, - take your pick, it's like trying to plan a lottery win!

I really like using Macs, but the whole secret product update thing really does cause major issues trying to plan business using their kit.

Come on Apple - lets have some support - its not going to ruin the company and it would show you see us as valued customers rather than a revenue stream!

On your mark....

Get set.....

DELL.COM!!!

In consideration I think its a very risky move to turn your professional world upside down for a few hundred dollars of perceived value.

Personally I think your still 1000% better off with an '09 Mac Pro than an '10 Dell.

'09 Mac Pro's are still amazing Professional workstations. If they don't come M18 and you have work that will pay for it NOW then I'd just consider getting your Mac Pro and move on. You won't even worry about the 20% differences when the new ones comes.

Please apple...let me be the lucky one that just decided on getting a mac pro and not having to wait more than a week for an update!

Pls pls pls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

'aint gonna happen!. Been caught buying 'old' kit before. Technology moves on so fast and equipment devalues so quickly going this route you might as well set fire to your cash.

Really, that's good advice, and I was being sarcastic anyway. No way in hell am I getting a Dell.

Anyway people, I don't think its happening tomorrow. Someone from the Macbook forum just discovered the new updated Macbook is now available at the New Zealand site (http://store.apple.com/nz/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=MTAyNTQzMzg), among other eastern stores, plus at the time of this writing, the Macbook is not available to add to cart in the US online store.

And at the NZ site, the Mac Pro has not been updated, so I don't think it's today....again.

Oh thank God they finally updated the MacBooks! It's been an agonizing 210 days since the last refresh!!! I am finally at peace with Apple.

...and rien ne va plus.

Frankly that's what obviously was going to happen.
