To be fair, the realease of an updated Mac Pro isn't a major front page news story like the release of the iPad. Different market segments.
:apple:

The G5 - first Edition was Front Page and marketed like hotcakes to Eskimo's. If the new Mac Pro has significant performance and market beating power drain-reduced specifications, or an AMD cpu then it'll get some hoopla from Apple.

AMD cpu? That would be the end of my Mac pro endeavors on the spot. AMD cpus are no longer in the same league as Intel performance wise.

Computers are no longer going to get "hoopla" from Apple.

Why is everybody getting so worked-up over the power of the new Mac Pro?
My 2008 Mac Pro has more power than any of my applications can work with.
I need my video applications to be rewritten for 64-bit, OpenCL, and Grand Central Dispatch so they can take advantage of the power of my Mac Pro.

I've waiting a while to upgrade (from a G5) and really need to be working with a new desktop asap.
I'm not prepared to drop £2500 on a high end 2009 MP if simply waiting another month or so will see me get a much faster machine.

I'm running a recording studio and need the most power I can get.
I can't afford to be upgrading all the time as there is always a downtime/adjustment period.

I'm running my entire studio off a MBP at the moment and it is KILLING me.

Hmmmmm - you have been on a G5 and continue to "hold off" on purchasing a Nehalem 45nm fab because waiting another month or so will get you a much faster machine

NEWS FLASH - the current MP is MUCH MUCH faster than your G5 - you may see a 15% practical improvement over the current Nehalem based offerings by waiting.

You can wait another 18 months and get yet another 15% by hanging on and on and on.

I purchased one of the last C2D 17" MBP - and it is so fast and stable and cool running and - well - it was a great decision for me - the next generation powerhouse thing can often be overrated.

We're in the same situation.

Have to say - it's not so much hanging on for the next best thing... it buying at the right time, so you don't end up with old technology. Being caught by the last of the G5's I know from first hand how bad it feels to shell out 1,000's and find next week you've bought the last of the line!

Quite frankly anyone that goes out and buys a new 2009 MP now at anything close to full price is simply out of their mind. The 2009 value is no longer there unless they start some serious discounting.

There is a reasonably predictable life-cycle of Mac products though.
A 2010 MP is highly likely very soon.

I've been caught out twice in my lifetime by not waiting, getting a machine at the end of a life-cycle and ended up having to upgrade again sooner than I would like.
I understand what you are saying but I'd rather wait (and whinge about it) than bite the bullet and buy a machine that will soon be EOL and a lot cheaper.

If nothing happens by June though I will probably buy a used 2009 MP Quad to tide me over.

xgman - there are circumstances where it would make perfect sense. If you have a new large dollar assignment requiring the horsepower than you buy what is needed today. Risking the new large dollar assignment over a 15% or so bump in performance would be "out of their mind" thinking.

yes, I understand that there are some exceptions, but we kind of know that the update is either a few weeks or a couple months out and the performance boost of the new cpus/mem bus etc. is significant and the 2009's are over priced even by Apple standards based on the tech they include. And quite frankly if this update never comes, as much as I like my 2008 3,2 quad, I will have to rethink my aversion to windows.

And as Octanomic said above, a used "tide me over" purchase would make more sense if push came to shove on all of this.

octatonic - as I mentioned earlier - I'm good for a few more weeks but WWDC will likely be my outer time frame unless a potential engagement gets delayed a bit more.

If needed for business or personal satisfaction or whatever - you hold off until you have just purchase.

Yes, I am in a similar situation.
I have a production session coming up in July and I would really like to have a stable system by then.
I'm running Logic with Apogee Symphony after years of using Protools HD and a little concerned about going live with the new setup without ironing out the kinks.

Every Tuesday that passes unfulfilled & I die a little inside.
(Ok, not really, but you get what I mean).

+1 to that. I've said it before I know my Quad 09 was overpriced in May of 2009 but today it's a joke at full retail. (gt120, 3GB ram, 640GB HD?) and the current base 8-core is still stuck at 2.26x2 which is slower than my Quad for single threaded apps! (and it's $3,200!)

If they release a 6-core (single cpu) version with Six DDR3 slots + a real stock GFX card (200 GTX or 5000 ATI) I may sell mine and pony up the extra for a new model. Oh and release it for $1999.99 =)

Definitely wait. If you waited THIS long you can wait another month or two.

octatonic - ironing the kinks out is a real issue if you are starting a new assignment with a new computer system.

Also - there can be the announcement date - followed by a shipping date - followed by actual delivery & QC - followed by getting all your peripherals sorted & software loaded - followed by updates / driver issues / followed by some run time.

Good point you made.

I wonder how hard it will be to plop a drive from an 08 or 09 Mac Pro with S/L and all your apps etc into a new box, boot to the supplied dvd and run the update/special build dvd as an upgrade install to get back up and running?

About as simple as you describe, I would think. Worst case scenario, you have Migration Assistant bring stuff over from the old drive onto the new one.

Ever since steam has been released on for the Mac, I've been yearning for a new mac pro.

I might have to jump ship on the newly released mac pros once its out.

Very true. I bet you could pick up a 2009 mac pro for a substantial discount once they announce the new model. That is how I got $600 off my MBP, by haggling with the manager at the Apple store.

Are MP's even stocked in the Apple stores?

It was a MBP, not MP. ;)

But to answer your question, maybe, according to previous threads, as not all carry stock. When they do, its a base Quad with the '09 systems. I presume that it depends on the store's location (if those decisions are from Cupertino), or inventory is the choice of the store manager.

So most systems are ordered online, especially CTO systems and Octads of any kind. Besides, that's where you find the refurbished systems most of the time (there are a few authorized retailers/e-tailers here and there however).

New MacPro 6-18...I hope.

Well, I am just wanting to see the new MP come on out on 6-18....and then I hope the back to school free iTouch etc. comes with it.
I will need to get a new monitor for my new MP so I am following all the posts regarding this.
I still like the looks of the MP so I won't be disappointed if that stays the same, but make the hardware upgrades and changes a wow factor.
Anyway this reminds me of an old "CSN" song "Helplessly Hoping".

Anybody remember it?

If apple releases the Macbook (https://www.macrumors.com/) before they release the MP. I am going to be super mad. The fans on my power supply are in and out which means it is going to burn out. It is the last of the G5's, so when it dies it will kinda be ok, but if I have to purchase an over priced 09. My opinion of apple will fall even more.

Years ago I would always recommend apple, but over the years the customer service drop, quality, and it seems they don't care about pros. When I bought my G5 i went to the local apple store with cash in hand to get it. I stood next to the machine trying to get someone's attention, to give them a few thousand $. Finally someone said "hello" to me. I told him that i wanted to buy one. He said 'ok' walked over and started helping someone with an ipod. I left and bought it somewhere else.

If it were not for my hate of windows, and the exhaustive process of keeping a pc running smooth i would be long gone. Windows 7 is pretty nice, and the HP workstation look and seem well built.
