Here are my 980 benchmarks on a 2010 Mac Pro 3.46Ghz 12-core 48GB RAM with the OSX on a SSD. The tests are a follows:

1. (1440) MacVidCards-flashed Radeon R9 280X 3GB
2. (1440) MacVidCArds-flashed Radeon R9 280X 3GB + unflashed Lightening R9 290X 4GB (in Cubix Xpander)
3. (1080) MacVidCards-flashed Radeon R9 280X 3GB
4. (1080) EVGA Superclocked GTX 980 4GB

(notice identical benchmarks for the first two. I returned the 290X as it's not well supported in OSX yet)

I can also report that I'm getting approximately 2x faster render & export times with the GTX 980 compared to my Radeon 280X within Adobe Premiere Pro and Media Encoder.

Still no CUDA support, and no bootscreens. MacVidCards, I'm pulling for you pal. Let us know when you start accepting pre-orders.

Still no CUDA support...

How come? No Cuda so...
Yosemite, GTX980/970 and OpenCL is working in Adobe CC(?)
Are You sure?

I thought that Adobe Mercury GPU acceleration is just "broken" on MacPro using 970/980. I mean: no cuda and no opencl
Any wise guy here with knowledge about it?

should i send 980 back?

Hey pros - I bought the 980 for my mac pro and clearly it is still in the works. I am not a graphics card aficionado and would like the opinions of your guys. The tech at nvdidia told me that since the 980 is not supported by mac, I should get the "evga gtx680". It seems it is basically the same price, but of course less badass than the 980. What do you guys recommend? Should I send back 980 because it has no cuda support and get the the evga gtx680 or should I just be cool and keep the 980 and hope that it will offer cude in the next few months?

I have no idea on timelines for these cards so I figured I would ask the pros here. Thanks.

I don't know if I qualify as a 'wise guy', but I do have knowledge about this issue. I can report that my GTX970 in a 2009 Mac Pro upgraded to 5.1 provides OpenCL acceleration with both Premiere Pro CC and Premier Pro CC 2014. Yes, CUDA acceleration isn't available, but OpenCL works just fine in all my projects.

wait

gtx 680? seriously. that is a 2 year old card.

My turn to report something :)
OpenCL works in Adobe Premiere but only half way. Rendering Premiere timeline is faster comparing to old ati 5770 1GB (about x2) but the same timeline playback is choppy and actually a bit worse than Mercury CPU only playback.
The same timeline (1080p sequence with 5K red files) plays ok on the old ati in 1:2 res using OpenCL. Even 1:1 plays almost ok :)
My gtx 970 plays ok only 1:4 res.
Tested on 10.10.0 Yosemite, 343.01.01f03 driver and Adobe CC 2014.

Be cool Daddy-O.

Same here.

Yes, CUDA still NO BUENO.

I would like to clarify a few things from the Barefeats test:

1. While we can do the physical mod to an R9 290X to enable PCIE 2.0, we have not set up a way to offer the service.

2. We are in possession of an EFI rom for it developed by a brilliant guy, it is still not complete and has many issues. But slapping the 290X in there and seeing the boot screens is cool. Hope to get it better. Major issue is that there is no frame buffer to assign to card. The 8000 AMD controller kext only has 1 defined, and it is for 6 mdp. (guess where they are going to put that) So, even with a boot screen it boots to be a "AMD RADEON 8xxx" just like an unflashed one. SO, we don't have a finished product, and it may never get any more finished than that. Also, current iteration shows boot screen on DP but will hang on boot if it is connected, only on DVI does it reach desktop, and then on 30" it flickers until re-hot plugged. So, not ready for PRIME TIME.

3. I don't know why he wrote 'Like the un-flashed GTX 980, it will NOT boot with the native Apple supplied NVIDIA driver." in regards to GTX780. It certainly should run just fine without Web driver, we have been shipping them for more than a year. I have written him and asked to clarify.

4. GTX970/980 EFI. We are getting multiple emails a day about these. (Despite a notice on our website that we will let everyone know when they are done) Still working on it, but you need to be patient. If the giant company of Nvidia hasn't got the CUDA drivers finished it shouldn't be too surprising that 2 guys trying to write an EFI for the card are having trouble. Fact that first Maxwell card has EFI screens is very encouraging. (GTX750Ti) Still no PCIE 2.0 on those but may start selling them anyway as it isn't as big a setback on a card like that.

If you are going to buy something that is advertised on Barefeats, do him a favor and use one of his links. (To be clear, I don't get a nickel of that) The guy does nothing but thrash Mac stuff and get useful answers. And Apple doesn't make it easy for him. (no freebies for instance)

I have the 980 Superclocked running in the Mac Pro 5,1 driving the LG 31MU97 4k monitor running at 4096x2160 @60hz in 10.10. Amazing, so happy, once cuda is in then I am set, until EFI gets ready and I will send it in!

970

Just got an Asus GTX970 Strix running on my 2006 Mac Pro 1.1 that was bumped to 2.1 with an Sfott Yosemite install. So far it's miles ahead of the old gt7300 that was in there from day one. Once the cuda stuff is sorted it should be just scream in'!:D

Thanks!

Thats... very close to the two D500 of my nMP and ways above the GTX680...

hmmmm, a nice argument (got offered a 980 for a nice price, just have then to switch from Mavericks to Yosemite at the cMP)

Congrats! Seems like a really superb upgrade! I'll be following the GTX 980 threads from now, hope MVC will work 24/7 on his tweak!

970 Strangled by TB1

Thought you all might find this informative.

Been playing with eGPU on my rMBP.

A GTX970 in a TB2 enclosure but running in a TB1 rMBP.

(gonna find my Bioshock 1 disk he,he)

BTW, I was rather disappointed to discover that the 60Hz hack doesn't work, it kicks the output back to rMBP screen only.

EDIT: Added the GTX980 via TB enclosure in rMBP.

so i just upgraded to 10.10.1 and the nvidia web driver aren't compatible.... anybody else have this problem?

^^^^Yes, every time there's an OS update that happens. It's been the subject of many posts. Nvidia will take care of the situation in a day or so.
