a new way of connecting the keyboard was just too much for me to resist

Fair enough, but this particular model is not called the iPad Average User. It's called the iPad Pro. You're not the target demographic for this machine, so you can't really criticize it for having features you don't care about.

Ouch

The USB-C port is the most interesting part for me, by far.

There are a bunch of USB-C devices you could potential plug in, and as far as an external display goes... I would like to see official support for the iPad to be a secondary display for a MBP (rip Duet display)

Then maybe you don't need an iPad Pro and will do just fine with a regular iPad.

But there is no 12.9” size regular iPad,not even 10.5”.

It is funny how Apples product line-up gets more and more fraqmented every year. Instead of releasing One amazing product they try to implement stuff that nobody really needs (IMHO). Pencil (its just a stylus really) and external keyboard are well in that category, because not even some of the real ”Pros” really like those all that much.

You and me, both. Really hoping to see the dang invites go out today otherwise the odds of an event this month get pretty grim.

Just so they come out before the end of the year, I will be happy. My 10.5 is still doing a great job but I am concerned by the looks of a family member who is to inherit my 10.5 when I get my 11. The only thing that save it from vanishing is it needing my finger to open!

They will probably be out by the end of the year, everyone is just guessing as to when the invites will go out, there is still time. Today, tomorrow or they could even hold the event at the end of the month on the 30th October. Tim Cook is in Europe in a couple of weeks but that doesn’t mean they won’t hold the event before he goes or even after.

Is it possible they do a "soft introduction"? Probably not as this will be a big deal.

No, they will want to show the new design of the iPad Pro off on stage, especially since it will have Face ID as well. Also it’s not all going to be about the iPad, there are some Mac’s as well that are rumoured, a new 13” budget Mac, iMacs and Mac mini is also reported.

If so, then goodbye all those awesome music production apps for iPad.

They could still use an USB-C to 3.5mm Audio adapter for audio connections but I agree I would still prefer to the retain the 3.5mm port for the time being along with the USB-C.

While true, it’s only half the battle. If Apple lock down the usb-c port as much as they did lightning via software it won’t change anything.

For the usb-c port to be a really big deal, Apple will need to open it up for third party developers. There’s a strong possibility that it will both take a while to become useful and be heavily gated via the mfi licensing.

I hope I’m wrong, there is some much possibility from it, but if the software side is still lacking then it won’t be that much better over lightning :(

Yes, I am excited about the upcoming iPad pros, and Yes...I will definitely be buying one for sure. But I do hope Apple starts taking that “Pro” moniker more seriously. And I have a message for them. Hey Apple...How about, after 3 years of iPad pros being available, you finally release a version of Final Cut for the iPad Pro?? Come on Apple! If you are going to charge MacBook prices for the iPad pros...start treating them with more respect. Cause if what Apple is doing with the new iPhones is any indication, I assume the next iPad pros are going to be even more expensive than the last ones. Great. But aside from face ID & thinner bezels...add some Pro level software!

I remember when the main thing distinguishing iPad pros from regular iPads was the Apple Pencil. Now that has changed. The regular iPads can use the Apple Pencil. Which they should be able to. I don’t think a pencil = Pro. I am talking about real pro features. Yes, the last iPad pros added pro motion, and they do have faster chips. Great. But let’s start exploiting that speed and “Pro-ness” by offering Pro level software exclusive to iPad pros.

I think it’s ridiculous that iPad Pro users have to resort to 3rd party apps like Luma Fusion(great app) for their video editing needs. Come on Apple. Adobe recently announced they are going to release a Full version of photoshop for the iPad next year. So I am hoping Apple announces a Full version of Final Cut for the iPad Pro at the October iPad event.

Good shout.

3rd Party apps from Affinity and Procreate are putting the pro in the Pad, a version of Final Cut should be on there...and while we’re at it, if Apple ( or anyone else for that matter) fancy a stab at a Motion/After Effects type app for the 21st century ( finger gestures to create motion paths anyone!?) that would be very nice indeed. :)

A lot of the problem is software related. Apps like Affinity Photo & Designer, Lumafusion, Procreate etc. can run on most iPads - not just Pros and in some cases iPhones too. That makes the iPad Pros a little less special and effectively just souped up iOS devices and they are unlikely to create a pro fork of IOS to get more out of the Pro devices.

One change I would like to see though across all iOS devices is a single documents repository that behaves much like the Cameraroll (Photos) where it is sandboxed but you can grant access to it for other apps. This way there would be no need to have duplicates of files in different apps - just a single documents area that other apps can get access to and update with your permission. This is different from the Files app of today that is a single viewpoint of all the various storage points in the device.

I would also like to see the Photos app on iOS get feature parity with the Mac version as that has a lot more features and adjustments available that work well.

Well, I don’t know about that analogy. The MacBook & MacBook Air can run Final Cut & pro programs, but if you really want to push them to the max, you get a MacBook Pro. So I don’t mind if Final Cut or Pro apps would work on a regular iPad....cause they’d just run better on an iPad Pro. The real point is...there are NO pro apps like Final Cut for the iPad available. I just want to see Apple do something about that. Hopefully they will announce something like a a Full version of Final Cut coming to the iPad at the event this month(if they have an event).

My point is though that if FCPX isn't feasible for an iPhone due to screen size limitation, by comparison the volume of iPads may not make it a worthwhile exercise for their resources and opens the door for third party developers such as Affinity. All Macs, regardless of model, share a comparatively large screen size whereas iOS devices have a much bigger variance of screen size.

I hope they have a 1TB option for storage.

I have almost 4TB of movies and I'd love to store as many as possible without streaming from Plex.

That would make it my perfect airplane device.

You must take super long flights. How many hours is 4TB of movies?

This be true. And I am all for 3rd party apps filling the void. But I really hope Apple starts treating the iPad Pro like a pro device and release a full version of Final Cut. I don’t think iPhones should enter into the equation. Yes they are iOS devices too, but Apple is marketing the iPad as a laptop replacement. And the iPad Pro should be treated like a pro device. Again, Adobe is releasing a Full version of photoshop for the iPad in 2019. It’s only a matter of time before they release adobe premiere for the iPad as well. Would be a shame if Apple let adobe beat them to the punch and not release Final Cut for the iPad before adobe releases premiere.
