Trackpad/mouse support surely must be the ‘one last thing...’ part of the product unveiling.

Microsoft Surface has a detachable keyboard with trackpad/mouse support.

So does the recently announced Google Slate.

(Ok Amazon Fire doesn’t, but it’s firmly aimed at the budget/casual end of the tablet market)

If this year’s iPad Pro is announced without this support, it’s going to be very puzzling.

And P.S. I know that the iPad Pro is way more touch-centric than the above devices.

The point though is that they are competitors and even though each have their flaws...

(Slate can’t seem to decide if it’s best for running packaged web apps or if it’s an android replacement & Windows is still an unholy mess full of legacy UI that barely qualifies as being fit to sit on a tablet)

... They are pushing forward with the pc replacement thing whereas Apple has been curiously holding back on this now.

Surely it’s now time to let the iPad grow into a new direction.

I hope they remove it. I see no use of it with all the wireless headphone.

In the music mixing and creation space there is an absolute need for wired headphones. No port = not a pro device for those users. On a similar fashion the MacBook Pro still has the jack.

Surely if you're in the mixing/creation space you're also using a DAC/amp through the lightning port. Because if you "need" wired headphones, you similarly need a better source. The MacBook Pro has a jack, but I wouldn't expect to drive my Shures from it.

Correct, the standard use of MacBook Pro on stage or studio is to connect a USB audio interface and completely bypass the 3.5mm jack

Ironically, this is entirely untrue for the MacBook Pro. And in fact, if anyone is truly using an iPad in a pro audio environment, they are doing the same thing: bypassing the 3.5mm jack and connecting an external DAC with a lightning to USB adapter.

All that to say, the 3.5mm is irrelevant for pro environment.

But it is important for more casual audio production. Bluetooth just doesn’t replace wired headphones yet for music performance. If you don’t believe me just try opening up GarageBand and bang on the drum kit while listening on BT headphones. The timing is impossible because of the audio delay.

Have a hug. Wow nail on the head.
Especially since the Google Slate Keyboard costs $199 Bucks alone.

I sold my 10.5" iPad Pro a couple weeks before the iPhone event in September, gambling on there being a vastly redesigned model at that keynote. I figured that if it didn't make it into the September keynote, it would make it into a separate October event. It's looking like the second scenario is about to happen.

Here's my problem though: My original plan for upgrades this year was replacing my Series 0 Apple Watch with a cellular Series 4 (done, and loving the new watch), and doing my yearly upgrade through Verizon from an iPhone X to an iPhone XS Max (done, and loving the new phone). I was going to keep my 10.5" iPad another year, but the possibility of a bezel-less redesign with Face ID and a new way of connecting the keyboard was just too much for me to resist and I decided to sell my iPad early while I could still get a decent amount of money for it.

The thing is, I have been so impressed by my Series 4 and XS Max and have been having so much fun using both, I really wish I had just not messed with my iPad setup. I've now gone a couple of months without my beloved iPad Pro and I'm really missing it. And the longer I wait for the new one to be announced for pre-order, the more thoughts start creeping into my head that maybe I should just forget about it and not buy one at all since I've gotten by this long without one.

But I know that once Apple shows off the new toys, I will immediately have iPad lust again. I hope there's a compelling software story to go along with this new hardware. I'm still optimistic that what I've done is going to pay off in spades as far as how I'm going to be able to use an iPad in the future.

I did the same thing and am in the same position, only I didn’t get the Apple Watch 4, but yeah, I have not had an iPad Pro for 2 1/2 months, but I really need one for work (which I put aside for other reasons too) but I’m starting to feel the pressure and if it turns out Apple makes us wait until Nov. or next year, I’ll snag a 2018 iPad while I wait.

*For laughs...
Can everyone imagine the following specs (not real, but what I imagine could happen with all these wicked rumors and leaks)???...

1.) A12X 2.7Ghz Octa-Core processor with Geekbench Single Core Score of: 5157
And a Multi core Score of: 27017

2.) A 120Hz Liquid Retina 3k display (12.9”) and 2.5k (11”) with 800 nits brightness and improved HDR display for watching videos and streaming HDR content.

3.) A 2-5ms latency with Apple Pencil2.

4.) A 9984 mAh battery with iOS 12 giving us up to 13-15 hours with normal use, but Apple will tout 10 hours.

5.) 5.9mm Bezels all around the display making the 12.9” iPad Pro 30% smaller and 35% lighter.

6.) Width of iPad will be 6.4mm on 12.9” and 6.0 on 11”.

7.) New Face ID built into black Bezels, using new faster response and Landscape/Portrait support for unlock.

8.) Speakers increased with new technology from acquired companies, giving true Dolby quality sound with more bass, better vocal, and acoustic sound.

9.) Improved microphones for “Hey Siri” and video recording (allowing Dolby quality sound recording in videos.)

10.) Increased RAM to 6GB on both models.

11.) New designed Smart Covers and new way of using a newly designed Smart Keyboard with led lights underneath the keys, (the reason they changed the smart connectors and will use another connector.)

12.) A single lens 12mp camera able to use smart HDR and record video in stereo 4K 60fps. A Front facing camera with 7mp and 1080p 60fps video.

13.) Improved new Cellular models with support for more bars and true GB LTE speeds.)

14.) BT 5.0 and improved WiFi 802.11ac for faster better connection to internet and support for multiple Bluetooth devices at once.

15.) New USB-C power and data connector to allow support for external 4-5k displays and new Apple Files app transfers.

16.) New Steel frames allowing stronger structure and also strongest glass used on display on an iOS device (glass same from iPhone Xs Max.)

17.) Increased anti-Reflective Coating making the new ipads 20% less reflective.

***Okay, All that will probably not happen, but can you just imagine it? ;)

There are some new photos of the iPad Pro 2018, uploaded to Twitter by Ben Geskin. It looks really good to be fair :)

I've been considering settling for a 2018 iPad and just not worrying about the Pro. But I want to see what the Pro actually is first. Most of this is just my frustration and regret about my bad decisions talking. I'm sure once I actually see the new Pros, I'll be all over them.

I'd argue last year's Pro 10.5 is a better value than the 2018 iPad, even if going solely by the ProMotion screen. But it also has the better processor (10X vs 10). I'd think the Pro 10.5 will have more future to it, even being a year older.

Don't forget the Pro 10.5 also has double the ram of the 2018 iPad which makes a massive difference!

Well....the second I saw the story a few minutes ago about the patents being filed in China, I was excited again. These things are launching soon. I have my money ready. I'm sure I will be wowed by the new bling. I sold my 10.5" with the iPhone X in mind--to me, iPhones with the home button and top and bottom bezels seem awfully silly now. I think it's going to be the same with iPads now, and I'm going to want that bezel-less model.

Im not familiar with how the patent process works..usually when this happens when are products released?

Now that I am on 11.4.1 instead of 11.3.1 (which I prefer for many reasons), I am now considering just gunning for the iPad Pro 3 (and ignore my own advice that Apple does best in even numbered releases) due to these USB C rumours, which would make game recording much easier

I think it depends on the country--like these new iPad Pros were registered in Europe a couple of months ago, but it seems like once patent applications hit China we're almost at launch.

Oh so that's how it works? Once the applications appear in China it means a few more weeks to wait for release? I assume something like this will have a presentation, they just wont release it without showcasing it?

I think they hold off as long as they can where they can. I wouldn't surprised if media event invites go out sometime in the next few days.

My 9.7 pro feels so antiquated, especially alon side my xs max.
That said, I guess I should appreciate Apple for pacing my spending.

It certainly feels like the timing is right. With the new powerful chips / 4k monitor, bluetooth keyboard & mouse support would make this ipad the IOS computer that 80% of the folks I know would be looking for. Those people already own an older computer (mac mini) and an older Ipad. A move like this would allow them to replace both with a single device.
