I got an idea. Buy the tilt-only regular stand, and drill four holes with VESA mounting standard. In this case, the are only four holes appearing on the stand, which is not that ugly, and when you want to use an arm, use the holes to mount. The screen will only be a little bit higher than official VESA mount.

I was going to get one of those, BUT if I read B&H's website correctly the HX series are good for monitors between 20-42 pounds, and the Mac Studio Display is only 12 pounds; I ended up ordering one from their LX series, which are for lighter monitors.

I have used both the single and dual HX with HP Z27 monitors that only weigh slightly more than the Studio Display, and it’s been fine. (Of course for the dual HX the range is 5–17.5 pounds per monitor, so if you need two it is even within spec.)

I much prefer the look of the HX series.

I ordered the tilt adjustable stand because at the time I thought the tilt and height adjustable was not worth putting the cost into the 2K+ range...but now I'm not sure I made the right decision. But is $400 worth a feature I might use? (My current LG monitor is on a monitor arm that I have not adjusted once since I bought).

Ars Technica is reporting that the stand is replaceable, just not DIY replaceable.

Hmmm I would guess $600 to go from tilt adjustable to height adjustable and $200 to go between tilt adjustable and VESA (assuming the height adjustable stand is $400, and the technicians will charge $200 for the swap).

Thanks for the info; I too preferred the look of the HXs. Ah well, maybe a short potted plant can hide it...

I would say no. Stick with your order and return/exchange it for the other one later if you find it's something you must need. Or get a monitor shelf/desk organizer if it needs to be a little higher.

I used to have height adjustable monitors too. Like you, I set the height once and forgot about it...which was pretty much at the height of a typical monitor. They are now on VESA mounts, which I also set once and forgot about it. I don't really see the need to be able to adjust the height within 4" (105 mm) for an extra $400, and still can't even rotate it. Maybe if you have multiple people that share your desk/monitor... (Just for comparison, my old HP stands had an adjustment of 6" and could rotate.)

So what if you want to rotate the display to use vertically? I'm guessing it's not like the XDR stand.

Do you have to buy a separate rotating mount and attach the VESA mount?

Yes, you have to choose the VESA mount option (without a stand) and find a separate stand or arm to put it on.

I ordered the height adjustable stand but am having second thoughts as my understanding is that this stand can’t offer portrait mode. A VESA mount would allow me that and would save me 400$.

For sure I will not order the regular stand, ergonomics are important to me
Why do you think the regular stand isn't ergonomically correct? I tried out my wife's 24in iMac and it sits in the perfect ergonomic eye line. I also have a standing/adjustable desk

I had issues in the past with iMacs that were always too low to be aligned with my eyes level, and it looks very similar to the iMac 24 inch stand, and I’m not particularly tall. Office ergonomics guidelines often recommend a height adjustable screen, to reduce risks of neck and back pain.

Anyway, I’ve come to the conclusion that the VESA + monitor arm was probably the best option for flexibility and adjustability. So I’ll probably go with that

Standard glass with Tilt Height stand.

Edit: Initially purchased the Nano glass, but canceled it for the Standard glass after looking at reviews talking about the after-care for Nano glass. Also, the text being blurrier than Standard glass.

I didn't want to deal with third party Vesa Stands. There are some decent Monitor Arms out there with quality builds, but stands? I don't know. I'm also pressed for time and can't spend hours and hours researching or testing out and trying what's out there. I'd rather spend the time focusing on my work, so I coughed up the money ?

Does anyone know if AppleCare+ will cover damage to the nano-etched glass? My condo gets a LOT of sunlight, but the only room big enough for my WFH “office” is the great room connected to the kitchen. I suspect I’ll “occasionally” be using a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution to clean buildup on my monitor. I’m also looking into microfiber towels to drape over the display when I’m cooking, etc.

I paid $42 for a VESA arm for my LG UltraFine 5K and it’s been fine. I see it is now available for $33 with an Amazon coupon. Since the Apple Studio Display is even lighter than the LG UltraFine 5K my inexpensive VESA mount should continue to work just fine. I have it mounted to a standing desk kit with a 1.25” thick table top (30”x60”). I paid ~$400 for the desk kit sans the table top. I could have gotten a $200 particle board table but splurged for an $800 cherry table from a local lumber mill. My point being is that buying the VESA version saves money for other uses.

I'm not sure if it will either, but I do hope they would?

The nano glass seems like a great option for exactly your use case. My only concern was with how delicate it seemed? I read up on some users saying if they could redo their purchase after having some time with the Nano glass, they would've opted for Standard Glass due to how much of a pain it was in taking care of it (cleaning etc..)

I think for anyone who takes great care of their tech, it won't be out of their usual habits. I'm a little rough with my tech and I worry about scratching* it and ruining the finish especially at that price.

I think the VESA mount is a good option. A “luxury” mount like ErgoTron is about $200 and perfectly adequate mounts are available for less than $50.

I tend to baby my tech gear, but I have noticed oily buildup on my laptop screens and LG monitor. I like to cook, and a ribeye fills my place with smoke even if I have the windows open. Usually I give my displays a thorough cleaning every 6 months or so.

cleaning your monitor with alcohol will damage it

Standard Stand although I know the height is not optimal or to low. Still for 400, I will better get some good books which I put under the stand for hight adjustability

what's crazy to me is that even teh pre-made stands on amazon are like $40-$50. Which is crazy to me.

I think there is a tremendous opportunity for a 3rd party to manufacture a stand that looks very similar to Apple's own stand, but attaches to the VESA mount on that option. That gives people the option to have the Apple look/feel and then later transition to a traditional arm later if needed without having to rebuy a new monitor
