erm...who cares? Seriously, I'm perplexed. Does anyone care whether the stupid phone is going to have a matte back? I guess some people really have nothing else to think about?

The correct word to use is translucent

Not exactly true, they do make flash diffusers, which are opaque. When I had a point and shoot, I cut a hole in an opaque film canaster to use as an diffuser. Worked great.

I believe we have an incorrect term used here. A material that allows light to pass through but diffuses the light is a translucent material, not opaque. Opaque is like wood where no light can pass through at all.

So if you're talking about the white canister that isn't transparent but isn't really solid either, you're talking about a translucent canister. An opaque canister would be the black one. :D

 The current iPhone 3G would have MORE grip than one with a textured back. One of the things people like about the 3G vs the original is that it doesn't slide out of your hand because it isn't textured. Texture means less surface area to grip on to which means less grip. Thats why racecars have slick, smooth tires and not grooved ones.

Hmm. No! Race cars have slick tyres so more rubber is in contact with the road. They have grooved in the wet to disperse rain surface water and prevent aquaplaning, which is why road tyres have groves. Nothing to do with texture. Rubber is more grippy, otherwise why don't they put the gloss plastic off the iPhone on the wheels?!?

Am I the only one here that thinks Apple will never release an iPhone with a matte backing? Especially the one pictured... It just doesn't seem flashy enough for Apple.

Decent point. Nothing in Apple's product line has anything but a smooth plastic or aluminum surface. Certainly no iPods with rubber backs. If people desire a rubber backing there is no lack of iPhone cases that give you exactly that and inserting a rubber backed iPhone into a tight fitting case could be difficult.

I'm with you man. I'd think aluminum or plastic not rubber/matte.

Great! I've always said it would look better with a matte finish. Everything looks better with a matte finish.

Now I might buy it if it was available for TMOBILE...

AT&T needs to refine their 3G network first before trying to advance forward with later versions. Till this day, no one (I know) have been able to receiving solid connectivity and sustainability of 3G on this network now. Offering 3.5 and 3.75 speeds are ridiculous if no one able to utilize it. Just worry about sustaining 3.0 first... and maybe Uverse fully deployed to key markets. Too many 'hands in the soup, and no meal to show for it". :(

Well, you're taking your time here to make comments about it on this forum. I guess some people have nothing better to do.

I guess the camera still isn't getting a flash, which actually helps in some instances. Of course for real shots, use a real camera.

haha Even my year-old Samsung slider has a flash! :D There's Apple's priorities for ya! lol I tell ya... :p

edit: I never thought about the fact that iPhone doesn't have a flash for its camera. Thanks for mentioning it.

I love when anti-apple kids pay so close attention to "macrumors.com". How did you stumble upon this site? Vista have an error? Lulz windows jokes...

Ugh.. Still plastic:mad: Anyway, the upgraded 3g will ofcourse be awesome.

How will it be? The 3G network cannot support Sling not to mention even the slightest spike in activity say during a Cubs game while at Wrigley Field! 3.5G will be an epic failure as it the current state of 3G.

One can always hope - but in the end, the truth hurts. 3.5G will not succeed until ATT throws some serious COIN into the infrastructure and the way the company is it is far from a certainty.

D

iPhone Pro?

Okay, first of all, the two phones shown on that page do not match...

However, the first one is so unbelievably dank that it is unbelievable at 9mm thick! The list of features is quite impressive and the side view looks square, which is improbable given apple's smugness about "slimming" the phone by using a tapered design. Of course, tapered design works better with plastic than titanium, but to add a iChat-camera, upgrade the regular camera to 3.2MP, increase capacity to 32G, and make the phone thinner and lighter! Well, it's just too good to be true. However, some combination of those and the upgrade in the operating system (cut and paste, background apps!) will get my money.

M@

PS So, if the new phone is to be iChat capable, will they call it the i-C-Phone? (I see phone?) or maybe the eyePhone! ;)

A rubberised matte black finish is not a good thing.

I have a hairdryer that has the rubberised finish. This things picks up scuff marks and shows them up as white streak marks. Also, it wears off, leaving a shiny black plastic underneath. Usually on the corners.

I have also seen a similar thing on one of the Lenovo laptops that have a similar finish.

Glossy plastic not only picks up fingerprints etc... but the scratches show up much more!

And a general observation here, and correct me if im wrong, i find that the glossy plastic backings on various products are quite thin and flimsy. Contrasted with matte finishes which i find to be a little more rigid. I like the rigid better.

I reckon it would be so cool if the apple logo on the back of the iphone glowed as in the macbook/pros. Would look awesome at night and in low light environments.

I have a hard time with the glowing apple logo even happening .... Why would you waste battery power on something so useless....

So much for there only going to be a 32GB model..?

I don't think anyone really thought 16 GB would go. Just the current 16GB model was at its end of life and will be replaced by one with the higher processor and new camera e.t.c.

Or so backwards with respect to there general desgin trend.

(Perhaps there is a OLED screen, and they are using the old LED backlights left over to luminate the rear of the phone. ;-) )

Can't be aluminum. There is no way that an iPhone will ever have a metal back again because of the signal loss and the necessity for an antenna cover or more extreme wiring of the antennas into the headphone jack ring, the chrome bezel, the buttons...just not worth it.

If this is true, how can RIM, Motorola and a host of others do it?

No 3G video call?

Does it mean there is no front video camera on the new iPhone? i.e. no support for 3G video call?

I'm uncertain about the matte finish. I LOVE the look of anything matte, but from what I've heard any matte finish is harder to take care of. Any damage is more noticeable. I'm sure it won't matter to Apple, as long as it looks good, but I don't want a device that's going to look like I took keys to the back of itin a few weeks...

Contracts

The reason that 1st Gen iPhone owners were allowed to get the subisdized pricing on the 2nd Gen iPhone is that the 1st Gen wasn't subsidized. Anyone who bought a 2nd Gen iPhone had a subsidized price (initially at least), so they will probably not be able to get a 3rd Gen phone at the subsidized price until at least 18 months from when they purchased their 2nd Gen phone.

Yes, totally agree!
