I did the same thing and I upgraded as soon as the 2nd gen came out.

I'm guessing AT&T will allow me to get the new subsidized iPhone price after I do a new 2-year agreement.

I think it depends on what plan you are on. If you are on the $99/mo plan I think you can upgrade after 18 months.

Just to add more fuel to the fire, a friend of mine who works for the only american company who carries the iphone ( everyone knows who i am talking about) has stated that there is a blackout period in august. What does this mean? probably the launch of the new iphone.

No design specs have been leaked out however, although a matte finish would be very nice, my iphone does not walk out the door without a case. As far as the running of background apps are concerned, back in march apple has said that they would not be running background apps due to the fact that it would kill battery life fast and also hinder the overall speed and performance of the phone.

Cant wait for the launch, it should be awesome... and down with the palm pre!!!!!!!

Funny.... I didn't hear anything about a "blackout period" must be a new more informed part of the company. lol! NOT!! Really??? Really??? We can all speculate what is going to happen but none of us actually know what Apple is going to do. We can hope and pray and plead, but Apple does what Apple does for the good of their business. No doubt holding the software update has created tons of hype and made their loyal fans like us believe that there is a new device coming. Think how disappointed we would be if they didn't.

I don't understand cell phone manufacturers (off topic I know). But why put a camera in if it's going to suck? I hardly consider a camera a feature on ANY phone because they suck to the point that I don't want to use them...

It's not a feature if it sucks, and that means the iPhone, too. Based on the pics, it looks like there is once again no flash...

Which infers that you extended. You technically signed a one-year contract.

No, you got it the wrong way round. He technically had to sign a 2 year contract, which in reality is the same as extending the contract for an extra year; 3 years in effect.

It's a good argument, though you forget that there is no real physical difference between some of the ranges you mention. Screen size and CPU speed hardly qualify as totally different products. The problem with differentiating the iPhone concept, is that you already got the app store, and thousands of programs written to a specific screen resolution (and partly size).

Apple has said that they believe the way to sell phones, is by supreme software (that must include the app store concept). So as convenient an iPhone Lite might sound; because the current one isn't exactly a small phone, I find it hard to fit the concept. The iPod touch seems to me to be the "iPhone Lite". Same as iPhone, perhaps with a camera in the future - and lacking phone-functionality (besides VOIP).
The next best thing - wouldn't you say?

true but I did not say the capacities were differentiating the line but just making a range out of it. I'm one of those that believes the iPod should stay an iPod with its hardware, meaning no camera or mic, because as a music device what sense does that make? I know it's software capabilities are widening but, how far does Apple have to go to make it an everything device? It shouldn't be called an iPod then, I think for marketing purposes ( and driving sales for itunes ) the hardware should point in the direction of a Music Media device. But that's just me :)

eh. i hope it doesn't end up being the case. I'm hoping for the polished ipod look.

they are referring to this summers new iphone right? I mean WWDC is only a few weeks away and there still seems to be differing opinions about what phones will be introduced. You think apple would even announce different versions for different countries or they will just announce the one iphone and then ship the other versions without actually saying anything at WWDC?

1) - Yes this summers
2) - I think they will announce what they plan to ship. They will be clear about any differences between the phones.

The announcement should be on June 8th at WWDC. 10a.m.

I kinda like the matte black defiantly won't be getting the white. I've heard that they show cracks much easier. Still kinda wish they'd go back to a metal back of some sort even though the reception is not as good.

Has anyone heard if they are going to be using a N based Wifi chip. I really want to turn my Linksys Dual band router in to just N instead of one radio for N and one for my iPhone. . .

There are references to the "BCM4329" chip from Broadcom in the 3.0 beta firmware. It is a a/b/g/n chip that uses less power and has blue tooth and FM transmitter / receiver on the same chip. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but that chip is referenced in the firmware. Check out the chip here;

http://www.broadcom.com/products/Wireless-LAN/802.11-Wireless-LAN-Solutions/BCM4329

EDIT: BROADCOM has a press release on their site that says the 43xx line of chips has been certified to support the new bluetooth 3 standard with a firmware upgrade - no changes to the chip at all. Thats sweet if you plan to transfer large data over BT. But, Apple would have to include the update in their firmware at some point to make it happen.

AT&T's 7.2mbps upgrade is just normal HSPA. I assume if the iPhone has two different GSM/3G models, then one will be normal HSPA and the other HSPA+ aka "evolved HSPA" with max theoretical data rates of ~20mbps down 11mbpsup. Not sure where HSPA+ is actually being deployed soon though. It will probably be at least another year before AT&T moves foward. (not to mention they should spend their money on expanding their piss-poor HSPA coverage instead of speeding up the nodes that already support it)

600MHz Processor
256 RAM
...

An important distinction that seems to get forgotten is that the 600Mhz processor is almost surely an ARM Cortex-A8 core which is far faster than the older ARM11 core in the iPhone. A 600mhz Cortex-A8 is roughly equivalent to a ~1200mhz ARM11, so the new iPhone should be noticeably faster than the older one, especially with 256MB RAM and a likely far faster graphics chip.

Err.. the glowing Apple logo, if implemented, will reflect the LCD screen glow.. Just like it's already done on MacBooks. It has zero impact on battery life.

Sorry but can you tell me how you going to do that in iPhone...in terms of internal design? To do that you got to have nothing between screen and the back. Do you think it will be practical for them to waste that space just for glowing logo?
...and answer is NO

It will be interesting to see what the marketing name for the next iPhone is. iPhone 3.5G seem awkward and unnatural and non-geeks wouldn't understand it anyway. Maybe they'll just stick w/ iPhone 3G but that wouldn't be real fresh.

It will probably be called the iPhone Video or something to that effect. After this, let's hope they settle down and continue with the typical naming convention for app store compatibility sake.

I agree. Also I would say that it would need a dedicated light so it can double as a flash. It would be a sweet move by . Hopefully it will be implemented sooner or later with the option to turn it off in the settings (power saving mode).

Please, please make it look and sound like iPhone AV...erm i meant iChat AV:D

I've always thought the name iPhone was incredibly lame, especially for an Apple product. Particularly when the phone part of it is just a minor aspect (and increasingly so) of the overall device.

How bout iCandosomuchshitonthisthing ?

You can upgrade any at&t phone after 18 months.

Which infers that you extended. You technically signed a one-year contract.

subsequent posts may prove e wrong, but it seems the war in your brain nuked your reading and/or thinking skills. At the time of switching to the new phone, he was excused from contractual obligations for the previous one, and had to sign a new contract--for two years. So ATT always has us on a two-year-leash. No inference, no technicalities. At least that's what i recall they did with me when i switched before my gen 1 phone contract was "up". if I'm wrong, I'm sure you'll take me back to the battlefield. :)

Breaking news...
