new hardware

The announcement should be on June 8th at WWDC. 10a.m.

I kinda like the matte black defiantly won't be getting the white. I've heard that they show cracks much easier. Still kinda wish they'd go back to a metal back of some sort even though the reception is not as good.

Has anyone heard if they are going to be using a N based Wifi chip. I really want to turn my Linksys Dual band router in to just N instead of one radio for N and one for my iPhone. . .

According to stories I've read, the new iPhones will have the new N-based wifi chip along with increased RAM and storage capacity. It's said to be 1.5 times faster than the current iPhone.

If we take the previously leaked images as indeed being the new case, I would have to say that there will not be a glowing apple (due to the absence of a cutout from the inside view) but there WILL be a flash. Look at the pic below, I do not see the usual chrome ring around the camera. I see a clear plastic ring from both sides, which would presumably act as a flash/light. Anyone else see this or am I crazy?

... and down with the palm pre!!!!!!!

Why ? I personally like competition. This device, whether you like it or not, isn't that bad at all and perhaps fires up the A..... of the 1000 smart engineers at Apple doing a better job.---> happy consumer

(...)

there is no mid range, all the other products have them. Apple is missing a gap of potential sales here. iPhone definatley needs one, or as I said iPhone Lite becomes the low range while the New iPhone 16gb and 32gb become mid and high. That prove anything for ya :) ?

It's a good argument, though you forget that there is no real physical difference between some of the ranges you mention. Screen size and CPU speed hardly qualify as totally different products. The problem with differentiating the iPhone concept, is that you already got the app store, and thousands of programs written to a specific screen resolution (and partly size).

Apple has said that they believe the way to sell phones, is by supreme software (that must include the app store concept). So as convenient an iPhone Lite might sound; because the current one isn't exactly a small phone, I find it hard to fit the concept. The iPod touch seems to me to be the "iPhone Lite". Same as iPhone, perhaps with a camera in the future - and lacking phone-functionality (besides VOIP).
The next best thing - wouldn't you say?

In one word its a bit silly that US is left behind with this; I thought you are the leader in that sort of technology:confused:

You are joking aren't you? American mobile networks outside of major cities are like tin can and string compared to Europe, and us Europeans are behind parts of Asia.

The Palm Pre is the new kid in town and people feel the need to include it in every conversation, we saw this with all the supposed iphone killers when they were released but it died down after one month.

And I remember Gizmodo reporting otherwise. All those original iPhone owners who upgraded are going to be out of contract this June/July. I never said they didn't have to pay the higher tariffs but they definitely did not get the same contract.

I won't speak for the past two years when the original iPhone came out and then the following year the iPhone 3G came out and what became of iPhone/AT&T contracts, but I called several AT&T stores and was told across the board that upgrading iPhone OS through iTunes does not renew 2 year contract. Purchasing a new piece of hardware, like the "soon to be release iPhone 3.5G at the subsidized price to replace last years iPhone 3G, renews your contract for 2 years. Buying an iPhone at the non-subsidized "retail" price for the 8GB/16GB for 399.00/499.00 while on an AT&T contract for say the iPhone 3G model, just change your sim card to the new phone and the contract remains the same.

Really hoping this new case material incorporates what Incase did with their Sliders (any owners can attest this is easily the best iPhone 3G case on the market). Their soft touch finish allows for non-stick pocket access while remaining a solid grip in-hand, neither scratches nor mars... Seriously, ideal material for a handheld.

Have to disagree on that one. I bought the slider but I switched to the protective cover. The cover is really grippy, which I like. Only weakness is that is can loosen over time but I don't mind picking up a new one every six months or so. I'm still going toss a case over it when it comes out.

Um, he wasn't talking about upgrading the OS. You are

Keep Reading, my friend... I listed all that was explained to me from AT&T. The sentence AFTER upgrading the OS pertains to their discussion.

Yes, I did keep reading (including your sig ).

AT&T employees do not know the future, but they sure can speculate.

Current AT&T policy does not dictate future policy. Nothing is written in stone. Perhaps the new iPhone will be treated in the same way as the current 3G, but perhaps not. The policy/rules that will apply to the potentially new piece of hardware will be announced once the new piece of hardware is announced.

Will it also be less prone to getting cracks in the housing from doing absolutely nothing to the phone?

The OS is obvious. That's not the issue.

Now changing to the 3G with the subsidized price is a standard contract extension. The issue was whether or not the original iPhone users had to extend their contract 2 additional years past the 1 they had gone through. I recall that they didn't - they had to sign a new agreement because of the rate plan changes but their contract length did not change.

But they do scratch, gouge, and lose their matte finish. Matte finishes are hard to keep intact because it's just a spray coating onto a hard plastic. It will rub off. Nearly all Incase sliders have had that issue with a matte finish.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but mine shows no wear in almost a year of heavy use.

They did not have to extend their contract. If they had the original iPhone they could upgrade to an iPhone 3G without extending their contract. It doesn't matter about the different plan rates - at&t did this to keep the iPhone users on their network and ensure sales of the iPhone 3G.

I'm finding multiple variances on this. But I remember it being that you could upgrade without extending your contract.

FWIW, I had to sign a new 2-year when I upgraded from 2G to 3G.

It will be interesting to see what the marketing name for the next iPhone is. iPhone 3.5G seem awkward and unnatural and non-geeks wouldn't understand it anyway. Maybe they'll just stick w/ iPhone 3G but that wouldn't be real fresh.
