Pixel phone it is.

I really wonder how Google will brand and market this phone this time around. Hopefully they learned from the Nexus series. This is an opportunity for not just a new direction but a better one.

Can't wait for Oct 4th.

Hopefully the new Pixel named phone won't look like the renders we saw earlier. Those are still horrible even if you call it a Pixel phone. I would love to see something like the Pixel tablet in build and look.

I hope so too. Google and HTC still has to get the phones right.

I have no problem waiting for the s8 if both the iPhone and pixel phone don't entice me for any reason. Samsung's failure to vet that battery maker has no affect on what they're still accomplishing in the smartphone space. If anything, they'll be more thorough QC-ing the s8, too.

HTC, in particular, needs to nail these phones. I sincerely hope they do. Leaks are not shaping up to impress. Still, can't wait to see what is unveiled. Very curious about this new direction for Google.

The phone will look like the renders. How about give them a chance to be announced first? As we have learned from the Note, you can't judge a book by its covers. Silly to get so hung up on aesthtics pre-release with a computing device. It might look sexy and be expensive. All good until it becomes a laggy fragile exploding recalled mess.

Damn let's hope the Pixel phones do not have the Pixel chromebook high pricing

Rumors point to higher prices this year. Prepare yourself.

But if this means Pixel is becoming even more premium with less compromises, more onboard storage, etc., then the uptick could be justifiable.

$100 price increase for the name alone is my guess. Which is sad. Nexus was such an amazing phone line and a solid value. Can't say the same for the pixel brand. expensive stuff that looks nice, but not worth the price tag.

But hopefully announce will bring some goodies.

They will be $100 more expensive this year. That is the same price as the HTC 10. That is pretty steep imho.

LOL. But the Note 7 was a good value right?

Anyway not pleased by the price tag increase. But Google always runs good sales and freebies. Plus amazing customer support. So hopefully they make it appealing. Or many will just keep their 6p.

Tbh the biggest single factor for me when getting a phone now is this:

"How good is the camera?"

For me, it has to be one of the Top 5 phone cameras out, otherwise there is no point. I don't care if Google adds a real life butler to the Pixel who helps me get dressed every morning.

If the camera isn't up to par, I won't buy it. So let's hope the Pixel has an excellent one.

Well the 6p is well considered top 5. So if they even just keep that and add OIS they will be up there for sure.

That has always been the issue with Google's phones. They have too many compromises. Usually it has been camera, battery life and build quality and performance.
Last year the 6P had a good camera but not so good battery life and performance.

How is that different from any other phone? Same could be said for the Note 7 compared to the Note 5 in terms of performance. And well the battery... the news speaks for itself.

Same boat. Camera is a big deal, and not just quality of camera, but the camera experience itself. Right now, there is no better camera experience than in Samsung's flagship devices.

The 6P's camera was a great offering. This year, they need to add OIS, improve low light pics (another area the S7E excels at), and make the interface as easy and feature-rich as TouchWiz's camera.

Samsung have been my go-to for reliable cameras for 2-3 years now. Always a bit let down when I try others.

Bit concerned about the price increase chatter... Nexus devices were always marked up a lot over the USD price so this could be eye-watering. And for that, they'd have to deliver on all fronts. Otherwise it could end up like the HTC 10 in the shadow of Apple and Samsung flagships.

Then again, maybe they don't really care how many they sell compared to others.

Totally agree. The camera on the 6P is good mid you but lacking OIS and software that other flagship phones provide hinder it. The battery performance just wasn't there as well despite having a bigger battery than some flagship phones it didn't fare well against them. Then there was the overheating throttling issue with the SD 810.
But the design of the 6P was very good. I loved the look and feel of it anyway.

Good move Google. So HTC don't have anything to do with it?

I pray and hope they don't.

I welcome a price increase IF they finally release a phone with no compromises like the past Nexus all have. I hope Google doesn't think they are Apple and think they can charge more because their name is on the phone.

My thoughts too. I don't mind pay a premium price for a premium phone with premium features.
But at the rumored price this brings the Pixel inline price wise with the HTC 10. So it should have the premium features along with that price tag.

Plus Google can afford to sell their phones at a loss as long as they get your eyeballs, and they aren't desperate like HTC is, who IMO cut corners with the 10. So hopefully that means more of a flagship type of phone, which I have a feeling will be the case. Google really should position itself up with the luxury phones like Samsung and Apple, because the middle class of phones is falling VERY rapidly to guys like ZTE, Xioami, etc. Although that then asks the question if Google values hardware sales more than having their software on more devices, and the obvious answer is the latter.

6P is a solid offering. The best Nexus I've seen hands down. I recommend it to many people who want a simple Android experience.

Personally, it's just too big for me. Samsung has really cornered the market for ergonomic and compact phablets.

I worry about the footprint of the Pixel XL. Will it have front facing dual speakers, I wonder?

I guess the premium features Google is selling with the Pixel smartphones are immediate software updates and monthly security patches. Similar to Apple.

Good, let them position themselves as a premium hardware and software company. I still think it's a bit at odds with their core business of getting eyeballs, but then again the "luxury" smartphone market is substantial as well seeing how well Apple and Samsung do.

My only fear is that Google seems to take way too many directions and doesn't often commit fully to something. We can see that in the many many projects it takes on, then suddenly and without reason completely abandons. Didn't they just announce they were abandoning project Ara? Their messaging strategy is a complete joke, how sad is it that I choose Verizon messenger over any Google offering.

Yup. They experiment a lot more. It's the nature of Google.
