360 render ... I'm still not convinced by design personally.

Not liking the look of that. Uninspiring, boring design (is Jony Ive moonlighting?).
The back looks weird and why the iPhone-like big ass bezels in front when they don't even have the touch ID (or boom sound style speakers) placed there?

Hopefully it's not both sizes of the Pixel phones that look like this.

It is not bad looking...but it doesn't excite me. I actually like the back...no camera bump! But the big bezels turns me off.

I don't have a problem with the pricing if the hardware delivers---still cheaper than comparable iPhones and Galaxies. But based on the rumors, I'm not seeing the value personally. The iPhone 7+ didn't offer worthwhile value for me to upgrade from my 6s+ and the 'Marlin' (bigger one) doesn't seem like a significant upgrade over my 6P.

Hmm the bezels look kind of beefy, but it's hard to tell. From what I understand stereo speakers are there, but the top one uses the mic. It looks uninspired, but I guess I can't complain about bezels anymore since I'm going back to iPhone. Looks like Google may rely on features as much as hardware this time around.

The HTC 10 uses similar speaker setup. It works surprisingly well.

I'm not so sure about the pricing tbh. What will it have over the OPO3? They night be going into a higher price range than the features will allow it.

Certainly a fair question--value is going to be different for everyone. Personally, I'd give my money to Google before One Plus (hate their business practices and trust 'em as far as I can throw 'em), and feel I can expect far better support from them, especially on the software front.

I agree with the software and getting timely updates. Google wins that hands down. But the OPO3 is $400 and seems to match up feature wise against the Pixel XL at $650. Both being unlocked phones there already is a great Dev community supporting the OPO3...I'm more than sure there will be the same support for the Pixels as well.

Oh no. Pixel devices might be launching with that "Nexus Launcher" that came out as a beta a few weeks ago. It sort of sucked if I recall my brief time with it.

The Nexus Launcher is being renamed the Pixel Launcher, and it's not hard to figure out why
http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/09/12/nexus-launcher-renamed-pixel-launcher-not-hard-figure/

Of course, the final version might be better, and the official design might look better, but these Pixel phones -- according to all the latest rumors in design, software, and pricing -- are shaping up to be disappointing. My feelings have always been lukewarm anyway. I guess we'll see in October.

That design... ugh. It'll be polarizing.

On the plus side they will probably not be blowing up!

Hopefully not. The Note 7 is basically out of the game right now. That's a giant cluster-fudge that Samsung will be busy cleaning up for the foreseeable future until the S8. They'll be scrutinized for the S8 launch so closely, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

In the meantime, if we're staying on topic, I wonder how Google/HTC will explain the design of the Pixel phones. They'll be polarizing. I'm disappointed that the larger Pixel XL is expected to have the same design, too. I was hoping at least that one would look closer to the gorgeous HTC 10.

And if this Nougat 7.1 customization or "skin" that Google has been hinted at is just the Nexus launcher that we saw in beta a few weeks ago, that'll be another polarizing thing. The new search nub (no longer bar) and date widget is horrendously ugly and cannot be removed (if it stays the same as the beta). That's the opposite of customization, Google.

But I'd guess in much the same fashion as the Google Now launcher when it came out, you should be able to use something else, no? (Maybe I'm mis-remembering as I didn't have whatever Nexus phone they was first available for).

Google is clearly trying to build a specific identity for it's line of devices---that's certainly going to lead to polarizing opinion as any software OS/skin does. I'm certainly curious to see the specific details surrounding the Pixel phones but am almost certain I won't be upgrading my 6P. Whether I switch over to the 6P full-time depends on all of the ancillary stuff they're supposedly set to reveal (Google Home, Google Assistant, and Allo--at least for me).

What would have me throwing my money at Google is if they released a Pixel convertible/tablet along the lines of the iPad Pro 12.9/Surface Pro/Samsung TabPro S. Not expecting that anytime soon though.

Does that mean the Nexus 5X and 6P will get updated to 7.1 without the "Pixel launcher"? And how will this affect future software updates of Pixel devices; will Pixel owners have to wait for Google to "customize" it to the Pixel launcher?

Many questions...

This is how Pixel phones will run:

Pixel launcher tour:

Lol the 5x looks better than the pixel renders. I still can't stand the software buttons, bleh. Give me capacitive buttons any day, they would easily fit in those large bezels the renders show. What's up with the elements you cannot take offscreen like the google button and the date? That would piss me off something bad. App drawer doesn't look bad. Folders look terrible, why are we on such a kick to make things look cool but be less functional? Well I guess I shouldn't be asking that question after Material design was released.

It's a shame that the pixel phones are going to bomb, Google is capable of so much more.

Hate the new Google search pill and embedded date. Like the folder design. LOVE the app drawer redesign. It reminds me of the OSX dock. And the slide up to open the app drawer looks slick and makes it feel more like an actual drawer. iOS should seriously adopt something like this and give people home screens. It looks more like this would come out of iOS than out of Android honestly. Maybe it's just the resemblance to the OSX dock...

I hope the standard Google now launcher gets some of these features. But I suspect Google will keep that and the Pixel launcher separate. :T

And we'll see about the Pixel phones. Apparently they'll be marketed more, I read. I would like to think Pixel is Google taking the Nexus program out of beta. We'll see.

If Google is prepared, now is a great time to launch a really good phone. Samsung with its exploding problems. Apple with there launch issues and underwhelming phone. If Google or someone had a really good looking phone prepared to launch it would do really well. If the mock ups we have seen are the current Google phone then they won't take advantage of this perfect opportunity. I'm hoping Google has a surprise in store. Apple really needs some competition right now.

Yeah the app drawer does look nice. I wish Apple would adopt something like this, having pages of similar looking icons is such a freakin terrible design.

My sentiments exactly...terrific implementation of the app drawer. Everything else is a step back from just about every other launcher available. I'm sure I'll be able to use that style of app drawer on my 6P sooner than later.

Regardless of my feelings that he Pixel phones will be underwelming, I'm quite excited for everything else likely revealed/discussed on October 4th.

Agree. They all need competition. I think Apple is going to slay it with the 2017 iphone. I think that'll really send the competition into a whirl. I really can't wait. And Samsung certainly needs a challenger chasing then even as they're chasing Apple. I think they're putting out the best phones now and they've cornered the market on ergonomic phablets so we'll see who can challenge them.

I said it in the other thread too that this is a great time for the Android competition to step it up now that Samsung is in such a terrible conundrum. All of them, not just google, have an opportunity at capitalizing on this moment in history.

Agree with your comment about the Pixel mock ups. Very questionable design.

so from previous experience, if they launch those on Oct 4th,
when exactly are they gonna ship them?
