Past performance indicates that no, the modern consumer cannot figure it out themselves. US sales widely indicate that consumers still buy from carriers.

The phone is advertised as exclusively on Verizon, which isn't true.

Oh ok got you. Well I guess they are saying that the only carrier that will have the phone in store is Verizon, but I don't know why. Do you get more of a kickback from Verizon if they sell a phone through them?

If you think about it, Google phones have always been quirky in design. Think about the Nexus 4 with its crystal back, or the 6P with its visor. Their design has always been kind of polarizing and different. Then it grows on people.

Not sure if that'll happen again with the Pixel devices. I do wish they just went all glass back and re-introduced wireless charging.

Side note: I don't know if anyone's really discussed this yet, but the unlimited photo backups and syncing is incredibly appealing.

I think it has to do with getting phones in the hands of typical consumers. Instead of say you and me, Google wants to get their devices in the hands of your mom or dad or sister. The benefit for Google is a good one: it gets them in the conversation in a number of users' upgrade plans. The benefit for Verizon is good as well.

Yeah I completely get that. I am just saying not advertising that the phone is unlocked as well. They must being getting something from Verizon for them to do that.

I think the people that would buy it unlocked already know it's unlocked and wear to get it.

Although I'm unlikely to buy one, I'm still looking forward to trying one out - hopefully it's in some stores here (UK).

It looks like a good phone with a new angle from Google. However, for me, it is a bit pricey when I think about my needs. Pretty much like how I ruled out the other top tier flagships. There's plenty of value in upper midrange or flagships from last year which more than do what I need them to do.

Still, I'll be waiting and watching reviews and feedback from buyers.

What I am trying to figure out is how 650 is to expensive for any flagship smartphone. That is right inline if you ask me.
Plus right now that that Samsung is in a bit of a slump I think this is a great buy for many.
If I didn't just buy an iPhone I would def be all over this.

My complaint isn't the price -- I always spend that much on a smartphone -- it's about the price when compared to the direct competition. I'd have no qualms buying one for $399, but I'm really hung up on having to give up a 1440 screen, OIS, and wireless charging for something that cost as much as my S7. It just doesn't look like a flagship to me. I view it as a midrange phone.

I currently have an S7 but prefer stock Android. For $399 I wouldn't even question the purchase. I'd have already ordered it. Maybe after seeing one in person I'll change my mind.

It's very interesting to see Google change as a company which embraced open source and customization to getting closer and closer to a walled garden, very sad as well.
Google hasn't changed one bit.

Android is still open and Google sells the Pixel XL unlocked. You're assuming things based on sheer guesswork. I have a Pixel XL coming from Google, it's going to be the next step forward in Android phones. It won't have everything, no smartphone does, even the highly worshipped iPhone.

I wonder what the quality of the speaker will be. It's a single speaker right?

Really a shame they didn't offer front firing dual speakers (remember HTC boom sound speakers?). Missed opportunity here by Google not taking advantage of HTC's expertise. It would've forgiven the large bezels, too.

Can't wait for reviews and feedback.

The top and bottom front facing speakers on my Nexus 6P are truly outstanding. It's hard to understand why companies like Apple, Google, Samsung, HTC and the like, make the decisions they do. Obviously their are a large number of factors to consider, but nonetheless some of their choices truly seem odd.

After watching football yesterday on Fox, and reading the top headlines over the weekend and this morning. The Pixel is getting a lot of talk. I saw at least 3 commercials yesterday for the Pixel while watching the Falcons, and I have now read 5 articles today that discuss the Pixel. I have seen another 5 or more in my news feed. I think Google is marketing this way harder then most of us have seen them do before. They are creating Buzz too.

I studied marketing in school, and I am a very firm believer in "any publicity is good publicity". Not all the articles have been praising the phone, but there sure are a lot of them. Whether good or bad, they are getting people talking, and that just means more people hear about it. When a person is ready to get a new phone, the iPhone of course in there head along with Samsung on the Android side, but now Pixel might be there too. Before it would not have even crossed someone's mind. Again I think Google is putting in the time.

We can argue about whether we think the phone is too pricey and will keep people away. I just don't think lack of knowledge will be the issue it has been in the past.

Obviously marketing is HUGE, and the biggest way the products sell.

So a girl walks into her AT&T carrier store, tells the sales person, hey I just saw a bunch of ads on this Google Pixel phone, I'd like to get that on my upgrade now. The sales person says what phone ? Pixel ? Never heard of it, we don't carry that phone. But I'm happy to show you this new iPhone 7.

A guy walks into the Sprint store, hey my contract is up, ready for a new phone, I'll upgrade to the Pixel XL please, the Sprint lady says, we don't have such a phone by Google. But I can show you this nice Galaxy S7.

By not having the phone at ATT, T-Mobile, and Sprint, that's almost 200 million people not having a chance to get the phone,. And trust me, 99% of the Joe Blow public, no way they spending $800 off contract for the Pixel.

They've been all over the baseball playoffs. Like pretty much every commercial break.

See I am telling you guys, Google is putting all it's marketing resources into this phone.

Think about just your average smartphone shopper that is a Verizon customer. They don't care about the latest and greatest updates from Google, they just need a phone that works. They walk in and see an iPhone 7 which they probably already knew about, a Samsung S7 or Note 7, and the Pixel. I bet money they are not really considering the Samsung right now because everything thing they have seen about the phone has been it exploding. Now it's just the iPhone and Pixel. Maybe they have been an Android person for awhile, that is a Pixel sell.

With Samsung problems with the Note 7 that they seem to not be figuring out, I think the Pixel might be the new go to android for awhile. Unless Samsung figures out their woes fast, they really might have some issues. People won't trust them with the S8 if they are still having issues with the Note 7. This can only be a good thing for the Pixel. Samsung is their real competitor right now. If they move them out of the way, they can then go for Apple.

Last year I recall seeing a bunch of Nexus 6P / 5X commercials in the Fall. Watching the football playoffs, and the X-Files reboot, just a crap ton of Nexus commercials on Fox, for awhile that time. Plus saw Nexus 6P ads in magazines at Walgreen's, etc...

The 6P did not sell well whatsoever

Serious do you just enjoy hating everything Pixel? You are worst then a troll android fanboy in an Apple forum. You have only complained since the phone has been announced. We have not even seen reviews yet.

Lol, pretty much sums up walking into a carrier store. I asked about the pixel yesterday when I was at Verizon getting my 7+. Even though they had a few cardboard cutouts on tables the 2 reps I asked looked at me like I was from out space. Don't they get some kind of training on this stuff?

Not at all. To me, if you like Android the Pixel is the ONLY phone to get. Stock vanilla Android is 100X better than Touchwiz and Sense IMO. I'm no Samsung fan or LG, I always preferred the Nexus line, and this Pixel line is the next gen version.

If your on Verizon, get the Pixel no questions asked.

I just disagree with the way Google went about the launch of this phone, only limiting it to one carrier, and charging this highest price ever for their stock vanilla phone. If Google is serious and wants to compete with the iPhone and Galaxy, it needs to be in all carrier stores and easy to get, that's how Apple and Samsung sell tens of millions of phones.

Then why have all your post been bashing the phone? It sure does not come across as liking the phone.

May have to visit Best Buy when they get store demos in a week or so. Not as premium looking as Galaxy phones but I can settle for slapping a case on it if the AI is the best in the world and at least it's OLED and not piss yellow last generation LCD.

I must've found a diamond in the rough yesterday--had to visit my local AT&T store to have them update their system with the IMEI from my 6P as it what still showing the 6s+ I swapped the sim from. He recognized the 6P, asked why I was switching from my iPhone. After I told him I like to switch between the two OS periodically, he asked if I was going to get the Pixel.

He even recognized that I was wearing an Android Wear watch. The only time someone else ever noticed my Huawei watch, they actually asked if it was the Apple Watch.

I think constructive criticism is a better term. If we vent why we won't give up our hard earned money maybe Google can learn something. But I hear ya, we should let you guys enjoy your pixel purchase as we've said our piece. I'm very curious what it looks and feels like in person and can't totally rule it out until I see it in action.

We're all smartphone owners and that commonality should keep us from trashing each others purchases. The pixel is still a very nice phone, especially if you avoid the Verizon one.
