Seems bizarre that a year and a quarter later, they're still shipping the original configurations of the nMP. I know there's probably more to update beyond just swapping in a faster CPU but it even the initial version felt like there was new tech coming fairly soon that would be a big improvement over the first version.

Their too busy putting out watches and uselessly thin laptops. It's a small company with not very many employees!

Tough crowd. Give them time. I know message board speak has them keeping up with Intel output or else...but things don't work like that. They want to recoup costs on the initial R&D before they have to start revisions.

OK, not this time around yet.
New MBAs and MBPs with updated CPUs and a steep price increase.
Also, the TB Display took a big hit, now 150€ more expensive. How come?
WTF Apple, are you trying to drive us away?

It looks like Apple doesn't care much about the loyal fans spending big money.

There's more profit in selling ten or twenty times the number of iToys to newbies.

$500 for a watch that you'll recycle next year when the Iwatch2 is released (and you'll probably need to buy an Iphone7 to use it)? This should be one of the Ferengi rules of acquisition.

I believe you are incorrect on the big money spending bit. They just figure they can sell 17,000 dollar watch made up of 300 dollars worth of materials instead of a top of the line mac pro with 3000 dollars worth of materials.

Check out the euro to dollar rate right now and what is was a few years ago.

Apparently, a smart watch also doubles as a smart toilet for money.

(Not from me, but the most snarky comment I've read about the Apple Watch up to now.)

My point was, if they didn't even update the nMP or the TB Display, why the increase in the TBD price anyway?
This is not anymore a state of the art display, it's well outdated in terms of specs - don't take me wrong, it's still a pretty good display, better than most other brands out there, but the tech inside is nonetheless outdate by today's standards, no TB2, no USB3, resolution is still more than enough for most but not 4K or 5K still.
Why the sudden increase in price from 999€ to 1149€?
Funny though, just checked the US store and it's listed as 999USD, not sure if this is the same as before.
Here we always get, besides the direct USD->EUR conversion, also an extra 100-200EUR increase.
Not sure if the US prices include taxes, I believe it's different from state to state, and I believe shipping is also a factor.

Well, maybe in June at WWDC the nMP 2016 will be announced.

Tough crowd. Give them time.

???

Wait, expecting the biggest tech company in the world to update a model I don't know, once a year, is "tough"?

If the company isn't going to take products like this one seriously, why did they even bother to do a major update, only to let it rot again?

The nMP isn't a POS. It's still a really nice computer. Do I get to brag it's the fastest on the market? No. But why would that even matter to begin with?

When it comes to my workload, it still works great. If it doesn't work for you, why does it matter when they come out with a new one? I'm sure the largest tech company in the world already knows it left some in the dark. And since they haven't announced they'll fix it to accommodate everyone's needs next revision...I'd move on.

+1 for a Ferengi reference;)

shipping from where? china*? It's expensive shipping to US than to Europe?

*) yes the nMP is US-Made, I know.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The nMP was actually designed to be a compost bin all along!

Very good question. I bought the base nMP only because I lost the iMac screen lottery (yellow/uneven backlights) which I couldn't live with doing design and photography. If the Mac Pro line truly dies I'll most likely jump back to the dark ages of Windows. All I need to run are Quickbooks/Adobe CC Suite/Office which are all 1:1 on Windows.

i highly doubt they're letting it go.
pretty sure they're following the schedule which was already set in place prior to the first release..

you're suggesting apple spent (possibly) billions on r&d with the game plan being "let's launch then see what happens.. then decide if we should keep going or let it go"..?

they spent billions on a long term plan.. or, at least a ten year plan like the other mac pro.

one mac pro upgrade per year probably isn't going to be happening (macpro 16.1 not likely.. they'll maybe make it to 10.. then end the whole X thing after that)

Any news on new AMD hardware?
R9 300 is to be announced in June, maybe same time as the nMP with the new FirePro based off R9 300.
Will AMD release a whole new series instead of some rebrands as reported? Some rumors suggest they will.

Apple spent a total of 1.7 billion on R&D last year for all it's products. So if you, let's say, divide that by the percentage of Apples total sales attributed to the Mac Pro it would seem to be a much smaller number but still not insignificant.

1.7 billion dollars of waste on R&D could only be accomplishes by the U.S. government as it's minuscule compared to the 18 Trillion nation debt. :D

i think they worked on it for a number of years, right? maybe since 2010?

regardless of that.. your argument seems to be one against apple selling a mac pro in the first place.. but they are making and selling one and they're probably a bit smarter than you at knowing the worth of such a computer.. they did make it so they obviously saw some sort of value in it besides baseline comparisons with their other products.

fwiw, i'd be surprised if apple isn't selling at or close to the estimated number of units.

national debt is a hoax.. how on earth can the debt be repaid when there's more debt on earth than money? i suppose you could make some more money except doing that increases the debt exponentially.. but such is the system we live in and accept

Hopefully they refresh it at WWDC. My cMP 4,1 was choking last week and need to dust it out again. Wouldn't mind having some increased horsepower. But for a 6 year old machine, I'm still very happy that it's lasted as long as it did, and still going strong enough really for 2-4 more years. As long as Nvidia keeps updating their Mac drivers, it's all good!

The nMP isn't a POS.

I didn't say it was. But it's already out of date. If they're not going to update the tech on a regular basis they should at least drop the price over time. But of course they're not going to do that either. Or at least up the included memory. Or the SSD capacity. But nope.

If it doesn't work for you, why does it matter when they come out with a new one?

It's an expensive machine. If I'm spending that much I expect to get my money's worth, which in this case is the latest generation tech.

pretty sure they're following the schedule which was already set in place prior to the first release...

That "schedule" was going years without a real update. I don't think they can do that again and expect to keep selling these.

you're suggesting apple spent (possibly) billions on r&d with the game plan being "let's launch then see what happens.. then decide if we should keep going or let it go"..?

Nope. If anything it seems like Apple thought customers would be happy with creating a new model and going as long as possible without updating it. Again.

Nobody expects a new case every year. But it's not that hard to take a model and move to the latest CPUs when they're available. And if their plan didn't include going to a new CPU once a year or so then yeah, they failed in a big way.

they spent billions on a long term plan...

No question development wasn't cheap but no way it was "billions". Or at least I hope not considering the level of MP sales.

Why would they want to upgrade only the CPU if they are right now giving minor upgrade? Of course 14 or even 18(disputable...) cores are truly amazing proposition, but more important are GPUs.

On the market there is no GPU right now that would fit 125W thermal envelope and be better than those that are currently in MP. Excluding Nvidia totally. We have to wait for next gen GPUs from AMD which should be just around the corner.

Yes, I know what people think about AMD, and Apple in Pro market.

Speak for yourself, there are plenty of people using apps that can't take advantage of GPU. Even if there still aren't any better GPU available, that doesn't stop them from upgrading to new CPU, not to mention things like upping ram and SSD space which don't even require changing the mobo.

ESPECIALLY since the GPU is on a separate card. They can update them independently and not have to wait.
