Very interesting. It’s slightly odd that the 670 is releasing before the 680, but this may add some credibility to an iMac update this month.

Apple and AMD have a very tight relationship, and it’s not unheard of for a computer giant like Apple or Dell to demand full dies at launch. I could see a deal being made where Apple has exclusive rights for the 680 until November.

Trying not to get my hopes up, but a 9900K and Radeon Pro 680 would be a very welcome spec bump!

The Pro 670 is a cheaper part (I am guessing it would be just a Pro 680 that could not validate all 2304 cores, but does validate 2048), so getting it out the door is easier while production ramps up to full speed and AMD gets better yields for the Pro/RX 680 parts.

Yes, Apple could demand full dies at launch, but I suspect they are going to have more trouble with getting enough 9700K and 9900K deliveries (9600K part is essentially an iteration of the 8600K, so I expect it will be in decent, if not plentiful, supply). I am also wondering if Intel will have any trouble supplying enough Z390 chipsets, as it a 14nm part as well.

If and when Apple releases an updated iMac, anyone who is serious and not looking to just kick tires, may want to order one as soon as they can...I suspect that deliveries will start slipping quickly into 2019. Of course, Apple's wisest course of action would be to hold the update until Q1 2019, so there is always that possibility.

So I was browsing geekbench for 9900 benchmarks today, and I spotted this:
https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/search?utf8=✓&q=8700

Is this legit? Seems to be multiple iMac with 6 core 8700k processors? What is this? Looks to be the exact processors/configuration I would expect apple to release.

These are Hackintoshes...people have been building Z370/Coffee Lake ones since they could get their hands on the CPUs. Got to http://tonymacx86.com for more information.

We have underestimated how much more Apple’s top executives want for their own bonuses than their company’s honor.
If Apple’s top executives started making decisions based on “honor” rather than what makes good business sense then they would be removed from their positions by the shareholders in short order.

The ‘honor’ that Apple brand has is one of the reason customers are willig to pay a premium price. Imagin Apple has announced a new iMac on the 20th anniversary of iMac. How much fanfare it would create and how much more sales it would make. Same iMac model, one bought on the anniversary day, another one after an ordinary announcement event, which one would bring more purchasing satisfaction to the customers?

Take out the back-light from Macbook line is another similar mistake. Honorable feeling its customers share is an essential part of Apple narratives. Unfortunately, it is neglected more and more by the executives.

I think you are mixing different things. Of course a new iMac launch will drive customer interest and sales to some degree - new products tend to do that - but not sure what that has to do with “honour”.

I don’t think Apple’s “honour” (whatever that really means) or otherwise factors into people’s buying decisions in a material way.

I’m also not sure that people associate the “honour” of a brand with how frequently they redesign their products. In fact I’d argue the opposite may be true. Many high-end brands most respected rarely change their product design. Constant changes in product design is indicative of a design team that can’t make up its mind about what is good, and just wants to constantly spur sales by having “NEW!” products all the time. It comes across as being cheap.

We will know more this Monday - Wednesday . If the event its on 16/17 October, then the invites will be out this upcoming week
Hmmm... I originally voted in the poll for an October release, but we're almost halfway through October and there are no event invites. It could be a silent update though of course, as many have suggested.

I won't be buying though. I have had a 2017 iMac for about 16 months now. Back then I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't wait for the 6-core models, but in retrospect I'm happy I was forced to buy back then, given how long it's been without an update (and because the 2017 models already have full hardware HEVC 10-bit decode support). In less than 2 months, we will have hit the 1.5 year mark since the last release.

It will be a silent update this time. That is 100% confirmed, unless they come out with a Kernel Panic fix.

Imagine how inconvenient it would be to have a KP in the middle of the event...

Remember that Apple did increase the average waiting time (and price ;-) for an iMac update, as if suggesting people to look at things iOS. So yes, if and when ...

Is this based on precedence?

I lost my faith on the renew of the iMac for this year. A real mid-pro desktop computer was my only concern as my 2016 15' mbpt burnt out from daily use, probably the "upcrapping" event will include only iPads and a bluetooth device. They put so many effort on selling iOS disposable devices, they dropped real pro market years ago. Think that apple is not ready for the 9th gen cpus, as they announced this week.

I think the regular iMac is lower priority right now with Apple focusing its few Mac committed resources on the high-end Pro market.
There’s also the new iPads Pros coming this month while will serve as great Mac replacements for many customers.

Why do people keep saying this sh**?
Why does Apple supply free KPs with the iMP and MBPs?
If you need a reason for a silent update - there is a good one.
[doublepost=1539408163][/doublepost]Has anyone noticed that Apple made an update on the 21,5" iMac page?
The first iMac that sells for 1099 has a Mojave OS while the remaining two have the old colourful images...

I don’t agree I think that the pro market wants powerful computers not tablets and smartphones. I don’t think that exists a true pro tablet or pro iphone this is a joke!
In my opinion a good refresh should include 6 core imacs and 4 core mid-pro mac minis

It’s just an opinion, but:

1, if the 2018 iMacs only use 8. gen. CPUs than Apple could have just released them along with the MacBook Pro.

2, if they also use 9. gen. CPUs then there probably won’t be another update in 2019. So they either keep the redesign until early 2020 or they do it now in 2018.

It seems unlikely to keep a 2012 design until 2020. So I’m quite optimistic.

Think that they should upgrade the iMac on June, every line should upgrade together, computers, phones, iPads
I see no reason to upgrade the computer line separately desktops laptops etc, or every 2-3 years.
Should upgrade every year more or less, so like me who wants to catch the line won't buy the near 2 year old iMac nor wait another half year to make the investment.
I am pretty sure that they won't upgrade to the 9th gen this year, it is obvious
my opinion is that apple won't take the 6c/6thr or the 8c/8thr its pretty ridiculous for a pro machine
