Very close to doing the same and get the top i5 27 inch model (because I dont want the fan noise - as another poster stated above). I can probably wait, but then again i worry the nect model will be locked down with a T2 chip and soldered in ssd, so I wouldnt want that one anyway

Consulting my Magic 8-Ball, its reply, "Signs point to Yes", so you may want to make that purchase sooner rather than later.

Although, you might want to wait until Black Friday to see if a silent update comes out between today and Thanksgiving. It is possible that Apple will release one on Wednesday when the t iPad, mini and MacBook Air go on sale or when the Vega GPU option is released for the 15" MacBook Pro.

Stay frosty, Marines.

Hi Guys,

please excuse my bad English.
I have been reading the last months here, because I needed a new computer/iMac.
I use 3 months only my old 13" Macbook Pro from 2015.

No new Imacs came out this year probably no longer appear, so I had to buy now.
So I bought one last Thursday i7, Pro 580, 512GB SSD, I was also worried about the fan noise, that was unfounded.
I paid 600 € less.

I am very sensitive to noise, in Germany we have no air conditioning in the apartments.
Maybe someone can start something with my comparison, because it is very subjective.
In my opinion, he is as quiet as an Xbox one at mid-load, the first generation.
Under full load, quieter than a PS4 Pro.

That's ok for me, otherwise I will not hear it, only if I go up close with my ear.
Of course he always runs at 1200rpm, but that's what all the configurations do, that is really very quiet.
Maybe I'm just lucky with the VID of my CPU and GPU, I don't know.

I hope you understand what I want to say, maybe it helps someone something.

best regards

I'm in the minority on this but I don't get the excitement for the new mini. By the time you add external storage and GPU it defeats the purpose: The mini is no longer affordable or mini.

To me, the Mac mini is now waiting on a vendor to create an eGPU that compliments the mini form factor that includes an RX580 or RX590 (whenever it materializes) 8GB GPU with proper cooling and the requisite USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, DisplayPort and perhaps, a card reader that supports at least SD and possibly includes an XQD or CFast Reader, depending on demand for those cards.

I would expect it to be at least as tall as the mini and perhaps taller depending on heat dissipation concerns. I also wonder if the MXM GPU card format might make this a bit more palatable for the upgrade crowd. It seems like Akitio, NewerTech, OWC, Sonnet or LaCie would be able to make this happen.

Just a thought.

That would be awesome if Apple does release one more generation of iMac with just a spec bump in processsor and video card but not the T2 crap. But like you, I kinda doubt it.

Well, I finally decided to just get the new Mac Mini. I ordered it at City Mac and they gave me $380 for my 2012 broken iMac.

I got the i5, 16MB RAM, 1TB SSD. I have peripherals, so at $1,899 it costs way less than an old technology iMac. I'm pretty happy.

I assume you already have a 5K display comparable to the one in the iMac? If not, to add an LG Ultrafine 5K to your Mac mini would cost an additional $1,299 on top of the $1,899 you already spent.

So it doesn't end up costing less than an iMac, unless you buy a cheaper display that won't deliver the same resolution or display quality of the iMac.

And the GPU, Webcam, Mic and Speaker.
The i5 8xxx is not really faster than the i7 7xxxx, +-5%.

Unfortunately, the iMac series and the 12" MacBook are the last models that are lacking the T2 chip in them.

For whatever reason, Apple has decided to let the 12" MacBook languish for the time being and the upgrade to the iMac, while inevitable, seems to be taking longer than it should. I suspect because Apple really wants to move to 9th Generation CPUs which indicates that they are moving to an all flash lineup for the 27" and I will not be surprised if they leave the 2017 27" iMac on sale after the upgrade.

iMac 2017 + i7 = fan noise all the time

I was considering buying this configuration and no way to endure the fan noise all the time.

Hope you did not pick the AMD 580 otherwise it will be worse

The iMac 2017 has not been designed to handle such a high TDP (i7 = 95W and AMD 580 = 150W).

That’s why I am waiting a redesign with the same thermal design as the IMac Pro.

I was even considering buying the iMac Pro. The silence is very important for me.

I just received my 2017 5K iMac, and I chose the i5, Radeon 580, with a 2 TB fusion drive, from the refurbish shop. The hypocrisy of Apple's words and actions have me just about at the end of my rope . They blacklisted my 9,1 iMac because it cannot support Mohave. But my own machine could still run Seirra and High Sierra. So they preclude me from twoOperating systems that I could still use. I finally came to a place where I agreed with Apple that it's time for new technology and that I should upgrade. Imagine my surprise when my shiny new iMac shows up with High Sierra on it. You mean you're going to blacklist my computer because it can't Run Mojave and then I decide to agree with you and buy a new computer and it doesn't have Mojave on it? I have spent a weekend ripping great big large bleeding holes where they used to pucker, into Apple management and senior advisers.

For 20 years I have not had one issue with any of my Macs. I was your typical diehard, ignorant apple zealot. And if I ever need support for anything they would immediately make it right without charge without ever raising an objection or denying my request. There's a 14 day free exchange period, or return period. This time around they wouldn't even do that. I simply stated that if I'm going to buy a new Apple computer because my old Apple computer could not run Mohave then I think it's more than reasonable I receive a new Apple computer with Mohave on it . Does that seem like an unreasonable request ? They informed me that they were not able to take an iMac and load Mohave on it and send it to me. At that point I had to tell the senior adviser, "With the upmost respect , some of us wear our bulls**t on the outside of our boots." At which point I was sternly admonished not to use such language, while they're ripping me a new rectum, and stealing all the money. Lol. I said, " this conversation is completely ludicrous. You're telling me the biggest company on earth the richest company on earth the company that earned a good deal of this money by previously providing great service to its customers, is unable to load one of its operating systems on one of the computers at sells as new in 2018? Now there is a can-do attitude, and then you expect me to have faith in you as a provider of hardware and software and expertise and I suppose you expect me to highly recommend your product to my friends and peers?" So I backed down after thinking about it realizing that I could just wipe the iMac clean and loaded Mohave, save us both the time and effort waisted and exchanging machines. So I said "OK, let's do that will wipe the The fusion drive and load Mohave on it." Seemed like a simple enough request and showed that I was being more than diplomatic and truly making an effort to solve this issue even at my expense. This so-called senior adviser didn't have the technical Skills to even make a bootable installer for Mohave !!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA FU**k. Three hours, watching her fumble around in the dark , when the whole time I had "dosedudes1" Mohave installer sitting in my downloads:). This was 1 o'clock Friday afternoon. She finally said I have to talk to my experts and find out what I need to do and I won't be back until Tuesday afternoon. So I spent the weekend embarrassing and making the Apple technical support team feel like idiots . I had never said a bad word not a single one about Apple and 20 years. So imagine her surprise when she calls me on Tuesday and I say screen share! In Mohave pops up and she ask me how? Then I point her towards this and say, " With the help of people who truly care about Apple computers."

Hi guys, this is my first post here but i needed to ask a question after months spent reading this topic: no new imacs, so would it make sense to buy a used 2017 27 i7 imac, for 1600€ (covered with warranty until june 2019) and then resell it when the new imacs come out? or save the money and stick with my 2011 i7 macbook pro? i manly use it to edit raws in lightroom and photoshop, and with the 2018/19 updates sometimes i have crashes when i’m using both apps at the same time. I also need a better display than the one i have (an old 1080 samsung)

Thanks for your tips,

Carlo

That is precisely my plan.:)

I think you made an excellent choice. Agreed that we could always wait for something better, since that something 'better' is always around the corner, but then why not wait ... forever!
The only thing I would consider if I were you, is put a 1tb or 2tb ssd in there (if you're willing). The iFixit guide and tools make it pretty easy. I put a 2tb crucial SSD in my 2017 iMac and it makes a HUGE difference. The fusion drive just doesn't cut it anymore imo, especially if you, like me, plan to keep the machine for quite some time. :)

Thanks for the tip I'll do that.

Sorry, I just don't get what your rant is about. So you purchased a good-as-new iMac from Apple's refurb store, and it came with High Sierra. Probably because Mojave was not yet out when the machine was refurbished. Big mystery there. I doubt Apple is pulling their entire refurbished inventory (or even new inventory) out of stock when there is a new MacOS or update. After all, they DO give out MacOS to their customers FOR FREE for crying-out-loud!

You said you had Apple computers for 20 years, and you couldn't just opt to do the simple 30-minute upgrade to Mojave?

I think it's highly unlikely that you "embarrassed and made the Apple technical support feel like idiots." I think it more likely that after you left they had a good laugh about the lunatic that came into the store.

So for one, this is not even remotely the right thread for this sort of post.

Second - So your iMac came with High Sierra? You can simply download Mojave and update the OS yourself. It’s super simple.

Third - refurbished products come with the original OS. You bought a refurb 2017 iMac, so it will come with High Sierra. It’s not really Apples fault you didn’t know this.

But then again you didn't sit for three hours with the senior adviser, Who is supposed to be an expert, and who ironically could not succeed and load Mohave onto this computer. Read the whole story. Don't just edit what you want to try to make me look bad. I was a perfect gentleman and I bent over backwards to make this happen and they still couldn't pull it off. Vendor blatant refusal to even search for somebody in support who had the ability to created a bootable installer for Mohave. Does that seem like an unreasonable request? I don't settle buddy, I get what I want, and all I'm asking is that they treat me with the same kind of loyalty and respect I have given them. When that doesn't happen they hear from me. Because I respect myself and I have a set of standards that I live by. Hell I could've gone to the Apple Store, snd circumvented this circus. But when they try to force their will upon me, I'll let them squirm, and laugh while I'm watching. Now if you were a senior advisor, and couldn't create a bootable installers for Mohave wouldn't you be proud? Lol.

Wouldn't you think that would be the first thing I tried? I follow their instructions to a T , then I called support and they followed their instructions to a T. enough said .
[doublepost=1541478196][/doublepost]What you all seem to forget, Is that I have a perfectly operational bootable installer for Mojave sitting in my downloads. I could load that up and have it running in 15-20 mins. I'm not incompetent, but there is nothing unreasonable, in asking Apple to do the same.

So a mild spec bump and Black Friday could be the next opportunity for those of us waiting for a new iMac to jump in at last. But probably not really. The danger though, as I see it, is that we wait several months (or longer) for a new iMac that turns out to only be as new as the new Mac Mini is, and it's not really fundamentally any better but costs $500 more than the old one and has some little setback (like no little door for RAM) that makes it a difficult pill to swallow and makes us all wish we'd bought the previous version. The current iMac is solid, if a bit out of date. Maybe I should go for it. Apple is making it impossible to decide. Black Friday is the next decision point – my 2009 21.5 is holding its breath.

I think new iMac would not launched until 2017 iMac Pro sales reaches a plateau, probably sometime between Thanksgiving and 2019 WWDC. That’s what is in Apple’s sales timing thought process.

I'm not in the market right now, but if I were I would be looking at: Mini 6 core i5, 512 GB storage, add my own RAM and small display via HDMI. The iMac 5K display is awesome, but I really don't need it. And, this setup would work great as a TV with YouTubeTV.

I too am in the market and wondered if a Mini spec'd up connected to a 4K TV is an option anyone would like to talk me out of? Ironically, there is a space on the wall in front of my desk that would fit a 43" 4K UHD set from any number of brands. Sony, LG, TCL, Vizio all make sets in this size RTNGS.com claim to make for good pc monitors, but I wonder if the Mini's GPU everyone here seems to be so concerned about wouldn't mesh well.

(btw, I currently use a 27" iMac 12.1 with a smaller 21" second monitor along side, so real estate is valuable to me)

I'm in the same boat… Mojave ended the life of my 2011 27" iMac (with 1TB SSD added) as far as OS upgrades go. I was really hoping for a 2018 iMac with even possibly FaceID. Of course thinking about it I assume that will come to the iMac Pro or new Pro display first.

I'm debating just sticking with this machine, sans Mojave, or going the Mac mini route with a 34" or 38" UltraWide LG monitor.

I've bailed on waiting for a refreshed iMac.
I've also decided I don't really want to go the all-in-one route.
If the Mac Mini had a decent GPU I would have gone for it straight away. As it stands I'm deciding whether I want to go for the Mac Mini with the eGPU, or wait for the Mac pro, which will likely cost 5k for a base model!!

@Ifti - I just saw base model iMac Pros on the Refurbished part of the Apple Store for around $4300.

I’ve been looking at the costs of a Mini, egpu, monitor and all that. The prices get up there quick.

Or I might just nurse my 2012 iMac along for another year.

The way Im thinking is, with an iMac Pro, sure its a fantastically powerful machine with a gorgeous screen, but once you have it, that's it.
With the Mac Mini, Ok so its also not very upgradeable, but the screen is separate - so you can change as time goes on - and with an eGPU you can always 'upgrade' the graphics. That makes it a bit more appealing to me since it increases the lifespan of the Mini itself.......
Hence why Im waiting on the Mac Pro. I know it'll be more then I'm prepared to pay, but I'd like to see what it brings to the table....

EDIT: Just read that RAM is not easily upgradeable. That appeal for the Mac Mini is now gone. On to the Mac Pro....

Well, at least you can change the RAM in the Mac mini.

On the other side, the iMac Pro is going directly into the trash if something goes bye-bye.
I do not even dare to think about how the upgrade situation will be with Mac Pro

Agree completely relative to the "all-in-one" Mac Pro.

However, If/When Apple decides to announce the modular Mac Pro, I would expect that it will be serviceable and upgradable.

Random thoughts:

I've said it before, I'll predict it again:
2019 iMacs will arrive sometime 2nd quarter 2019.

They will (of course) come with the t2 chip.
If you want an iMac WITHOUT the t2, better buy a 2017, as they are destined to be the last desktop Macs that will come without it.

2019 iMacs will likely come in "SSD only" configurations. Even if "the base model" starts out at only 128gb.
The SSD will probably be like the one in the Mini -- that is, soldered in and not replaceable.

Ram may or may not remain user-replaceable, but I will -guess- that Apple will redesign the cooling system to the style of the iMac Pro, which may result in RAM that is technically "removable" but without easy access. That may mean prying open the case to access it. Again, beyond the "tech level" of the average user, and it will certainly void the warranty by doing so.

Those are my predictions and I'm stickin' to 'em!
