Firstly why would you do that to anyone, how would you like it if someone did that while you were working, they were well within their rights to tell you not to use such foul language, secondly that is a long rant just to complain that Mojave wasn’t installed on you’re device, something you can do yourself in around half an hour.

I reacted, not "acted. I gave myself time to chill, then I apologized to the support person, and I upgraded to 10.14.18 by pressing option-command-r. It takes you to the latest OS, instead of the original OS your computer came with. You're right, about a half hour.

At this point my hope is that without it getting refreshed at all for 2018, that they have a big update coming to it for 2019. Slimming down the bezels and bringing in Face ID.
My view is if Apple brings Face ID to the Mac, it will bring it to the MacBook Pro before it brings it to iMac.

I’m very surprised that Apple didn’t update the iMac at the October event, are we counting out an updat this year at all now? Or maybe a spec bump later this month?

Still don’t know why they didn’t update it, the Air and mini got an update, why not the iMac?
Several possibilities, including:
- They don’t think it needs an update yet.
- They didn’t have time to do the work yet.
- They don’t want to announce too many new products at one event.

And probably lots of other possibilities too.

I think new iMac would not launched until 2017 iMac Pro sales reaches a plateau, probably sometime between Thanksgiving and 2019 WWDC. That’s what is in Apple’s sales timing thought process.

Finally a rational prediction!
[doublepost=1541875511][/doublepost]
and it will certainly void the warranty by doing so.

You just HAD to add that? Now you're going to bring #tubexperience out of the woodwork screaming his misplaced legalese about the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act... :)

Of course the current iMacs aren't the exact same, but the general design is the same. Regardless, no updates since 2012 is bad enough. The only Mac that comes close to having a chassis that old is the Mac Pro not being updated since 2013, but of course soon it will be.

Well OF COURSE the "general design" is the same. It's an all-in-one that is mostly screen. You can also say that the iMac has the same "general design" as the Dell all-in-ones. What is in fact false is to say that the iMac has not seen any redesign in 14 years, except maybe from the standpoint of someone who has never used a computer.

.....

I was thinking about that - maybe it'll come to an updated & redesigned iMac Pro and MacBook Pro with a T3 chip of some sort?

And how would it work in clamshell mode? I actually disagree, I think you will see it on an iMac before you see it on a portable.

It wouldnt work in clamshell mode of course.

But .... touch ID doesnt work in clamshell mode on the new macbook air, but its a feature they added none the less, so saying ‘it wouldnt work in clamshell mode’ is irrelevent.

There was also some talk about Apple making displays again, which might have the camera. And I bet the idea of having Touch ID in magic keyboards is not exactly new to them either. We'll see in time.

2010 iMac Thicc on left. 2017 iMac Thin on right.

To be perfectly honest, this picture kind of pisses me off. It speaks to Apple's misplaced desire to make things "look good" at the expense of performance and usability. Losing the SD card slot on the side alone is reason enough to leave the iMac thick. Not to mention more room for more powerful components and better cooling. Thinner is not always better Apple!

The SD card slot on the back instead of the side is not a big deal, as long as it has one. Apple's trend lately has been to completely remove the slot.

Sure, I don't disagree, but the side was significantly easier. Just as a couple USB ports on the side would be easier than the back. Most people have these against walls. That makes them less accessible and less likely you see the thinness.

I just gave up and bought an external reader. I needed an external reader for CompactFlash, but I use it for SD too, since my iMac is up against the wall. It's way too annoying to try to find the SD slot on the back.

With the USB ports on the back I usually have to turn the iMac around to plug something in, but with the SD card slot on the back I simply reach underneath and push it in. The relocation of the slot is really not a problem, at least for me.

Furthermore, with the 2011 and earlier iMacs, it's easy to push the SD card into the optical drive slot by mistake if you aren't careful. That's one concern Apple eliminated in the 2012 redesign.

I agree 100%. Making the iMac so thin at the edges, for a device whose use is only from the front, was idiotic. It has forced compromises in components and cooling for no good reason whatsoever.

As the other poster said, Touch ID doesn’t work in clamshell either.

My thinking is around the business case and the RoI - Apple sells four times as many desktops as laptops, so if they are going to go to the effort of engineering Face ID for Mac, which will surely generate sales, they are most likely to do that on laptops given the stronger RoI.

That's because they put it right next to the optical drive. That didn't have to be the case. And it's moot now since iMacs don't have optical drives anyway.

I agree completely with the "it doesn't need to be so thin" sentiment - BUT none of us are designing the iMac, Jony Ive is, and Jony Ive doesn't like thick computers.

As for the SD slot, after years of being essentially the only memory card standard anyone needed to worry about, SD is facing competition. Nikon (and several video cameras including some very popular Sony models) are using XQD, including the new mirrorless Z7 and Z6 (and the D5 in its most common configuration)that are XQD only. CFast is much less common - Canon has it on one model (the 1Dx mkII), plus a few video cameras. Old-style CF continues to make occasional appearances, although, as far as I know, it's always the slower slot on cameras that also have a fast SD slot. The new CFExpress standard should subsume XQD (it's the same size and a firmware update will make XQD cameras CFExpress compatible) and the CF/CFast family (different slot, but hopefully CF/CFast stop showing up on new models). We'll be down to SD (consumer cameras, second slot on many pro cameras) plus CFExpress/XQD (pro cameras and video).

My guess is that there will be a spring event next year, new iMac's and probably an update to the 12" Macbook as well, alongside an updated iPad (not the Pro).

There are BTO options being removed which could be a sign of updates. For instance, I was going to break down and order a mid level 27” today, but stopped, as there was no longer an option for SSD drives.
