Call me dumb (and I may well be) but I'm having the same problem on my iPad2, but not on my Touch. Here's the touch, LH pic is the screen after one press of the button, RH pic is what shows when the button is double-clicked:

No problem there, so I must be doing it right. But when I try the same thing on the iPad I get:

So can someone answer the question already hinted at by Reckless and Rubo, ie is this feature just not available on the iPad?

Last night when I updated to ios5 it was there, this morning it's gone. Any ideas? (3gs)

Lack of sleep

Doh!! I only got 4 hrs sleep after spending half the night updating all my apple "toys". That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it!!

Correct! This is iPhone only.
Thanks. A definitive answer, (but I wonder why Apple omitted this feature from the iPad?)

Edit: Just found this on one of the Apple support pages:

Camera improvements for devices with cameras:
・Double click the home button when device is asleep to bring up a camera shortcut on iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (4th generation)
・Volume Up button to take a picture
・Optional grid lines to line up shots
・Pinch to zoom in the preview screen
・Swipe to camera roll from preview screen
・Tap and hold to lock focus and exposure, iPad 2 and iPod touch (4th generation) only support exposure lock

what kinda sucks is that once you take the picture. you cant MMS or email it unless you press the home button and then go into the pictures app and do it. The shortcut to the camera roll from the lock screen camera only cycles between camera and camera roll.

Do you have a passcode set? If so, that makes sense.

I really think you have to double click the home button. I have detected some small indications from this thread that this is so. Maybe a few more comments to tell the poster that they need to double click the home button.

I usually don't whine about stuff like this, but yes, I do miss the iPod icon. I understand separating the video from the music though--this is a sign of things to come. There will be a beefier video service in iOS in the not so distant future, and I think they're just preparing us for that.

you have to click back on your browser, scroll down to this thread, click it, then read the first 50 messages. it gets complicated but the exact process is buried somewhere in there.

Insane

It is insanely stupid and counter productive that we have to double tap. Isn't that referred to as the "Redmund Double Click????" Come on Apple... why would you do this??????

I love how people are still asking about the missing button, when they could read almost ANY segment of this thread and see DOUBLE-CLICK

Looks like this is the new

"Speaker on the right. Microphone on the left"

Yea im not a fan of having to do this whole double click to bring up the camera then push the icon.

Someone take a video of the 2 different ways to get to camera at the same time to compare the time difference.

2 iPhones, both with iOS 5, and put them side to side. On one, slide to unlock then tap camera and on the other iPhone at the same time as first, do the double-tap home then push button and see which route is the fastest. I'm not incredibly concerned with this, just a general curiosity. I am going to the apple store today and Ill do this while I'm there.

No camera icon on lock screen?

I have upgraded to iOS 5 and have no camera icon straight from the lock screen.

I've got a 3gs, is this feature only for iphone 4 onwards?

You didn't see Sticky: No Camera button on lock screen? [Merged] right at the top of your screen?
