Yeah it made me feel better about not shelling out for the M4 iPads.
I think if you come from mini led/ microled, you will be fine. I owned m1 max and I never feel like the screen is not black enough compared to the oled. I would have buy m2 or m1 if not for the fact that it is just lcd for the 11 inch.

I don't understand it.

Is Apple so afraid of cannibalizing Mac sales?

2800€ for an iPad Pro 13" 1TB including pen and keyboard.

2700€ for a 13" M3 MbAir 1TB and an 11" iPad Air.

With macOS on iPad, a large proportion would definitely choose the first option. More in sales with lower production costs.

For me, it would even be okay to tie macOS to conditions like 1 TB or only with the original keyboard.

But this...
Because Apple wants you to buy a Macbook and Ipad.

It's not just cannibalisation, MacOS could disincentivize iPadOS app development and therefore the 30% Apple store cut. MacOS will never come to iPad. The issue is however that iPadOS improvements are very slow... which make me understand why some people would prefer the MacOS shortcut to a more productive OS.
But that's the reality, MacOS is not coming, and if you want to replace a laptop with a iPad you often need to do many compromises and be very patient with improvements coming to iPadOS.

I really, REALLY thought that M4 iPad Pro was a signal that bigger things were to come with iPadOS 18. I would LOVE to to be able to use an iPad Pro mostly in place of my MBP, but it’s just not there.

MacOS isn't ready to ditch the mouse, plain and simple. The OS isn't written for touch, which is why we don't see any touchscreen Mac's. I own a touchscreen Laptop on the PC side, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've touched the screen vs using a mouse.

Are there other things they could do? Sure. But bringing MacOS to the iPad, as it exists today, would be a terrible user experience and likely be Apple's "Windows 8" moment.

I’ve been watching WWDC for well over a decade now and rarely if ever has a bug fix been mentioned *in the Keynote*.

The closest was when Snow Leopard pushed itself as a systemwide cleanup.

All these comments about “always buy a device based on what it can do today” crowd are exhausting. Acting like you’ve been living by this mantra for years when it’s just regurgitated MKBHD/YouTuber jargon.

We should all know by now Apple only updates iPad hardware with their latest tech to push sales because the OS is a hot mess. Look at all the issues they could improve with the current OS and didn’t, if this WWDC doesn’t tell you they don’t care then what does? MacOS can now manage your iPhone remotely and the iPad got an overdue calculator.

Additionally, if I bought an iPad with a **** file manager does that mean I should always expect a **** file manager especially as prices go higher and tech gets better…

So many things need at least minor improvement. Worst disappointment for me is battery life. Same as iPad One! 10 hours! With the all-powerful “Magic” of the M4, allegedly using less power, with less heat, etc., the M4 should be getting 14 hours or more. Nope! And why? Because someone’s w__ dream about “thinness”. No one asked for “thin” ( which will bend VERY easily). We asked for functionality and minor enhancements like the aforementioned files app, etc., but Apple dumped this turd on us. And if you think all the AI assisted everything won’t use up your battery ever quicker than before, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. Looking at the latest Air, which can do everything the M4 can that I care about. The hardware of tomorrow, with the software of yesterday….. Sigh..😔

I got the 13" Pro and am really happy about the lighter, thinner form factor coming from the M1 12.9.

Yeah I was really hoping they'd actually give the iPad some more features. M4 is an absolute waste on it.

Sadly my 2017 iPad Pro is now discontinued from support. The reports were right. Oh well. I'll continue to use it for my casual use.

It's been quite a few years since the hardware was holding back the software. Any omissions in iPad OS are not limited by the hardware but by Apple's conscious decision to not produce it. Depending upon what is prevent you from using an iPad to replace a Mac that could be the next release of iPad OS... or never. For me, the show-stopper is the lack of a universally accessible filesystem. Due to the inherent nature of iPad OS that is never going to happen.

iPads have their uses, but not as a production machine (at least for me). So it all depends on whether you want an iPad as a laptop or a consumption device, and what you value in a consumption device.
I agree. I would add that there is a middle-ground option. The iPad+keyboard folio has completely replaced Chromebooks in my workflows. Google often updates and enhances their apps for iPad OS before the Android or web version.

Honestly, I think Apple Intelligence will transform the iPad more the people will be willing to realise. It looks like a real help with productivity.
I was impressed by the calculator app and the AI for Apple Notes. To be able to rough sketch an image and then have the AI replace it with an image or higher quality sketch has great potential.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to draw stick figures in a physically intimate setting and have the AI replace it with pr0n. 😳😂 You know it's going to happen... people are people.

Is Apple concerned about cannibalized sales? Yes. There are many, myself included, who own both an iPad (10th gen) and a Macbook (13" M1 MBA) in addition to an M2 Mac Mini. If Apple were to provide Mac OS on the iPad (even if it was Pro-only), I wouldn't buy a Macbook.

I would be delighted if Apple were to enhance iPadOS to support a desktop-mode comparable to Samsung's DeX. (a desktop-mode that is still iPadOS but allows for desktop-type things like universally accessible filesystem, better extended display, etc.)

Name a single device that makes a great tablet AND a great PC.
apple could do it with ipad only if they add a switch on function to ipad, that is ipad when not attatched to keyboard and mac when attached to keyboard, but they choose not to do that …

They could easily just have MacOS be enabled when connected to an external display, and just have the iPad remain touch focused with universal control. Literally its just 15 GB of hard drive space…

If this is how it's going to continue to be, I think the M4 11" will last a LOOOOONG time now that I have the OLED/120Hz that the M1 didn't have. I don't think there's anything hardware wise that would get me to upgrade from this. Obviously there isn't going to ever be an iPadOS that makes me want to upgrade.

But the M5 will have 15 percent more performance to watch cat videos!

By stubbornly hamstringing iPadOS, Apple is losing money.

I sure HOPE SO!

I love my m1 iPad Pro still. No point in upgrading given the user experience.

+1 (probabaly plus 1,000,000 or more) - the M1 may be the end fo the line for many users - it will always exceed the bottom line “iPaddies” as David Pogue called them years ago, so you won’t need to upgrade.

What are people expecting with these M4s?! I’m loving mine without any software update.

I go back to my M2 MBA and it feels cheap and sluggish compared. Something I never thought I’d expect to happen.

Feel like replacing my MBA with iPad. It’s that good.

I can’t believe this; not for a minute.

After many weeks of frantic wondering...iPadOS 18 landed with a big wet thud.

Literally nothing changed about Stage Manager, multitasking, or Files app, or anything to make it work better.

I wasn't disappointed, because it's what I expect from iPadOS—of course the Apple Intelligence stuff is great, if you're on an iPad that can use it, but basically nothing happened to the iPad in particular other than...a calculator app.

Maybe next year, or maybe never.
I’m loving my 13” M4 iPad Pro and glad I got it. It‘s light, fast, functional and iPadOS 18 is going to make the best tablet available even better for my professional and personal use cases.

But I don’t get this incessant fixation on iPadOS transformation or evolution. In my opinion, expectations for iPadOS transformation and evolution signify a fundamental misunderstanding of iPad design intent. The iPad is a tablet — not a Mac. The iPad is intended to complement and coexist with the Mac not compete with it. iPadOS is purpose-built for this complementary role — so expecting Apple to change iPadOS to make it more Mac-like or to allow it to perform core Mac use cases just like the Mac is expecting Apple to cast aside its product vision for someone else’s idea of what the iPad should be. I am puzzled by this odd insistence on Apple ditching its product vision and replacing it with a crowd-sourced vision, because I don’t see the same fixation and insistence on usurping the product vision of any other manufacturer‘s product.

Finally, I don‘t understand the dissing of the iPad calculator app. Math Notes is exceptionally innovative and the most magical AI-driven app I’ve seen to date. You can literally perform higher-order math simply through writing what you want .. and having the app and OS evaluate your writing, perform symbolic and numeric calculations and rendering the results in your handwriting — without any special syntax or conventions other than simply writing what you want. How can we dismiss this as just a calculator app?

</Seriously puzzled>
