No four finger swipe on my UK machine either, even after a clean install from the "Macbook Air" OSX disks. On the bright side, I don't have the screen lines issue.

I tried the same re-install did not help. Seems we got the same build number of OS X as the US customers, so in my opinion this can ONLY be a hardware issue now

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1787103&tstart=0 < Also the same issue, hope that Apple will give some sort of message to us buyers of the faulty non-us model

I have just been into the Apple Store in Glasgow. I personally tried 2 different machines, and the display model. No 4 finger swipe. In addition all machines had the horizontal line issue. All were build week 45.

Someone at QC is going to be in trouble!!!

Its wearing me down now. I think i will return my own model and wait for a few months until these issue are fixed.

FYI,

The brilliance of Multi-Touch.

MacBook Air includes a spacious trackpad with Multi-Touch technology. You can pinch, swipe, or rotate to zoom in on text, advance through a photo album, or adjust an image. Or try out the new four-finger swipe. With this gesture, you can navigate up and down to use Expose modes or left and right to switch between applications.

From: http://www.apple.com/macbookair/features.html

Yeah the 17" description says it supports 4-finger swipe too, but it doesn't.

Well it was said both in the retail store that it has, on the web shop and by Apple Care... And the fact that all US models have it.

Anyways I'm curious whether someone got a swap and if they did, did the new one have the same error ?

i'd be asking for a new one everyday of the week until they can provide me one that works as advertised

I don't get how this could be a hardware issue - I'm assuming it's software based. I have a 1st Gen Air that I enabled 4 finger swipe on (by using a new AL MacBook install of OS X on and then editing a plist file.

Instructions I used are here:
https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/6475187/

This is the part that I think you people who don't have it working should look at:

I was disappointed it didn't show "Four Finger gestures" in the Trackpad system preference, just the old standard gesture. I had a hunch it was possible though, so...

I then examined the kernel extension "AppleUSBMultitouch.kext" (the one installed with the new 10.5.5 unibody OS X).

This Info.plist of this kext contains several entries for what looks like different makes of trackpads. I noticed that some of them had two keys that the others did not:

<key>TrackpadFourFingerGestures</key>
<true/>
<key>TrackpadSecondaryClickCorners</key>
<true/>

I didn't know which model trackpad my Air has and it didn't really matter, as I copied those keys to all entries.

Once the AppleUSBMultitouch.kext was modified (and permissions restored), I rebooted and, hey presto!, there is the Four Fingers entry in the System Preferences.

Four finger Exposé on my January 2008 MacBook Air now works just as it does on the unibody MacBook.

Can anyone try that and see if it fixes their problem?

I tried this, and by editing some files i managed to get the MBA to show the four finger swipe in the pref pane, but still it did not work. It is NOT a software issue, since we have the exact same SW and BUILD as the US builds.

As I and others have said a couple of times now:
The problem ONLY affects computer that has a customized keyboard, a NON-US keyboard....Meaning all European and Asian machines have this bug

It could still be a software, or more accurately firmware, issue, specific to localised input hardware.

AppleCare say that there is nothing that they can do and that I just have to wait until the Apple Retail Stores have new stock.

This seems a bit of a lame answer doesn't it?

Did anyone else get a replacement from AppleCare for a machine bought at retail please?

Thanks

JB

Received my 1.86 128 SSD MBA on Wednesday evening - UK version. No four finger swipe here either. System Profiler says the trackpad version is 0.73, machine built in week 45, display 9C9A. Just been on the phone with Applecare and they are going to exchange it for me.

No four finger swipe on new MBA in Tokyo, Japanese keyboard, week 46. Genius proposed it might be solved later with software update. Cancelled the contract due to screen issues.

Picked mine up on the weekend, no four finger swipe! wk45 UK type.
I checked the screen before leaving the store but in that light it is harder to check, but didn't see the swipe glitch until I set thing up at home. Spoke to the store on Sunday but they had sold out so couldn't check out the problem on a stock one. Shame as it's a great little laptop.

Same problem in the Netherlands: no four finger swipe. I contacted support and found out that my air has no serial number. Instead it comes up with this string 'Serial Number System Sal#' (normally this string is the serial). According to support this means that the logic board has been swapped. They said it is strange that a new computer already has its logic board swapped...

My 5 cents is that I have an old Air case (and trackpad) combined with a new logic board. Apparantly Apple Europe had stock of the old Air and replaced the logic to make it new. Seems a logical explanation why I don't have a 'four finger swipe' (since the trackpad is the same old one).

I contacted the Apple store and they are going to ship a new Air to me.
Hopefully it will be ok then.

janl,

My MBA which does not have the four finger swipe does not have a serial number showing in System Profiler either - it just says System Serial#. I wonder if this is the case for all Rev 2 MBA's that don't have the four finger swipe?

Thats an easy one to check, guys...

Please take a look at your serial number in 'about this mac' (and click 2 times on version 10.5.5). Does it give a serial number???

I found a hack to get the MBA 2.0 without four finger gesture in "Trackpad" control to show the 4 finger gestures..

http://rapidshare.com/files/164739302/gestures.xml

1. Download the gestures.xml file
2. Replace it with the one found in /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Trackpad.prefPane/Resources/gestures.xml

Hint: Rightclick on Trackpad.prefPane and select "Show content"

I've had a look at my existing gestures.xml in /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Trackpad.prefPane/Resources/ and compared it with the gestures.xml available for download from rapidshare.

Here is the relevant section from the 'rapidshare' file:

<dict>
<key>class</key>
<string>Gesture</string>
<key>gesturename</key>
<string>FOURFINGER</string>
<key>group</key>
<true/>
</dict>
<dict>
<key>class</key>
<string>FourFingerSwipeGesture</string>
<key>gesturename</key>
<string>4FINGERSWIPEGESTURE</string>
<key>moviename</key>
<string>4F_Swipe_Expose</string>
<key>gesturenotes</key>
<string>Swipe</string>
<key>nibname</key>
<string>FourFingerSwipeGesture</string>
<key>nocheckbox</key>
<true/>
<key>gesturenotes</key>
<string>AX_4F_Swipe_EXPOSE</string>
</dict>
<dict>
<key>class</key>
<string>FourFingerSwipeGesture</string>
<key>gesturename</key>
<string>4FINGERSWIPEGESTURE_1</string>
<key>moviename</key>
<string>4F_Swipe_Apps</string>
<key>gesturenotes</key>
<string>Swipe</string>
<key>nibname</key>
<string>FourFingerSwipeGesture</string>
<key>nocheckbox</key>
<true/>
<key>gesturenotes</key>
<string>AX_4F_Swipe_APPS</string>
</dict>

And this is the same section from my Rev 2 UK MBA that arrived without the 4 finger swipe:

<dict>
<key>class</key>
<string>Gesture</string>
<key>gesturename</key>
<string>FOURFINGER</string>
<key>group</key>
<true/>
<key>id</key>
<string>gesture.fourfinger</string>
</dict>
<dict>
<key>class</key>
<string>FourFingerSwipeGesture</string>
<key>gesturename</key>
<string>4FINGERSWIPEGESTURE</string>
<key>moviename</key>
<string>4F_Swipe_Expose</string>
<key>gesturenotes</key>
<string>Swipe</string>
<key>nibname</key>
<string>FourFingerSwipeGesture</string>
<key>id</key>
<string>gesture.fourfinger</string>
<key>nocheckbox</key>
<true/>
<key>gesturenotes</key>
<string>AX_4F_Swipe_EXPOSE</string>
</dict>
<dict>
<key>class</key>
<string>FourFingerSwipeGesture</string>
<key>gesturename</key>
<string>4FINGERSWIPEGESTURE_1</string>
<key>moviename</key>
<string>4F_Swipe_Apps</string>
<key>gesturenotes</key>
<string>Swipe</string>
<key>nibname</key>
<string>FourFingerSwipeGesture</string>
<key>id</key>
<string>gesture.fourfinger</string>
<key>nocheckbox</key>
<true/>
<key>gesturenotes</key>
<string>AX_4F_Swipe_APPS</string>
</dict>

As you can see the differences are the additional lines in my gestures.xml:

<key>id</key>
<string>gesture.fourfinger</string>

By backing up my gestures.xml file (to be safe) and then replacing it with the 'rapidshare' file the 4 finger swipe gestures now show up in my trackpad preferences. However I still couldn't get the gestures to work, even after a restart.

My hack is only for the display of the option for four finger swipe in the "Trackpad" preferences. Like you "the feature itself" it still does not work here... Maybe it is just a matter of some more tweaks/hacks to the SW... Who knows...

However the horizontal lines on the screen ARE hardware issues..

BTW I can't believe that Apple just replaces them with new ones that still dont work...Instead of holding them back for a week or so and do some troubleshooting.
