First off, thank you dev team! The iPhone X is epic! The amount of joy your emoji facial recognition has brought me is truly unparalleled! :D

That said, when I drive, the phone is much more useful in landscape mode. Had I known this feature would be disabled, I likely would have purchased the iPhone 8 Plus instead.

Please make this a feature I can turn on in the settings somewhere. Turn on Landscape view for iPhone X. Enable Landscape view on iTunes too, while you’re at it.

Here’s a thought. Instead of auto-disabling the phone when it sense you’re driving, have the iPhone X go into auto-CarPlay mode where it has an altered home screen with landscape icons and bigger icons that have been “CarPlay” enabled by each respective developer, including Apple.

BOOOOOM! #IdeaworthAmilliondollars

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Um no, you can rationalize it all you want, but the screen is advertised as bigger. Your posting is a ludicrous assertion, and frankly, less than half baked.

You are such an amazing pollster, going around talking to 99% of all iPhone users. Amazing. You should be sorry for trying to pawn off your own opinion as fact. But hey, those are the times we live in, so it must be aok.

1% here. #landscapeiphoneXftw

This is something Apple needs to fix in software update phone is wide enough in landscape to allow apps to rotate into 2 column mode.

I don’t care that the home screen doesn’t rotate, actually may rather it not, but the app need to.

Only people who have really used the plus phones can relate.

Agreed - 2-column mode inside apps is a must, even if home screen mode can't make it into the X...

Good riddance. I'm sick of having my phone in perma-lock and then having to fumble with notification center every time I want to watch a video.

I'll never understand why they didn't keep the "use mute switch for orientation lock" option.
What’s even stranger is that there isn’t some sort of “smart rotation lock” option that only permits rotating of content that makes sense, like videos as you say. I can’t believe that most people would prefer landscape for content best viewed vertically, such as websites.

I do miss this also. Few standard apps that use it, but I liked it on the home screen also - taht's just me.

If you swipe to notifications, I had that showing in landscape, then sometimes I didn't, beats me?

What I get when I turn the phone, the screen makes a brief odd animation with black corners...like it appears it tries to go into landscape, but doesn't. Only apps that do not support this view.

The new aspect ratio doesn't make any sense to me. 16:9 was the best.

That’s what happens when people stop living in reality and start living in marketing hyperbole fairyland. Remember when Jobs said “people don’t know what they need until you give it to them” now it’s more like “people don’t know what they need until we make them believe they need it”

I still believe Apple's ability to accomplish this is true, but you cannot argue with the fact that the iPhone 8 Plus has more viewable space compared to the iPhone X, especially when held horizontally.

When I had my 7+, unlocking the phone while holding the phone in portrait mode then having the home screen in landscape had to be the most annoying thing. Home screen in landscape was a feature I despised.

I just had a chat with Apple support: Homescreen is portrait mode only. It's a feature , not a bug.
I also asked about the missing two columns in mail and how some apps don;t use the whole screen in landscape position: The apps need to be updated to include the iPhone X dimensions.
For me it is a step back. As someone mentioned early: Landscape is the best way to use the phone in the car. and it is the only time when I need the homescreen in landscape mode. I can live with this but I wish Apple had this "features in a FAQ on their website.

What about other apps such as mail and notes? Do they get treated the same as the Plus models?

No landscape mode for mail or notes... which I find annoying. Workflow with emails in landscape with a split screen for inbox and the highlighted email is so much better and faster.

Supposedly the screen is bigger on the X yet we lost this very useful option. I hope they fix this in an update, otherwise I am seriously thinking about returning my X getting the iPhone 8 Plus.

It was never a feature intended outside the Plus and iPad. You didn’t lose anything.

The X is not a Plus replacement. Anyone who thinks that hasn’t been paying attention to the dozens of threads about this issue since the reveal.

Regardless of the number of threads that discussed this...., there is NO reason Apple can't let the users decide what they like. Allow them to make the decision in settings. If someone wants the homescreen to rotate in landscape, so what? Just allow that feature. If they don't like it... they can turn it off again.

Excellent point!

Not related to landscape mode, however I would like this similar option for FaceID to go straight to home screen too. (Meaning give us a choice- for those who want notification screen as it is now, so be it. But I'd love to not have to swipe up)

I thought about this too actually. It would speed things up a lot! Though it would mess with other features like revealing messages in lock screen after it recognises you.

I hated landscape home screen on the Plus. But if it is a setting you can toggle on or off I don’t see why not.

What was the benefit of this? Serious question as I've never found it very useful.
I use a wide-angle camera attached to the lens to help out with augmented reality experience. The clip covers right upper corner of the screen so I cannot swipe down to get to Control Center or see battery stats. Rotating the screen will be an instant solutions.

Another problem if is the phone is held in landscape and an app is launched just using the screwy portrait home screen, the app also is displayed in portrait too, it does not automatically rotate to landscape. So you have to rotate the phone back to portrait and then to landscape again and now the app rotates properly in landscape to how it should have been in the first place. So sore wrists until it's fixed rdar://44399461

Another interesting thing is the XS Max is using the iPad's preferred split view mode which is overlay. You know when in Mail you tap the Mailboxes back button and they slide out in a floating panel. Rather than the always visible default mode of the Plus where you always see 2 columns and no extra taps and sliding panels.

iPhone XS Max has split view mode? where did you see or read? I am stuck if I shall buy iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max and this feature would make my buy iPhone XS Max

I wonder if iOS 12 will remove the landscape home screen from Plus phones as well.

I think the reason for the lack of landscape homescreen on the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR is Face ID doesn't support landscape yet. Maybe once they figure that out it will return.

Face ID works in landscape with your head tilted only 45 degrees.
