My jailbroken 3G can already mult-task and create folders. Has notifications on the lockscreen, completely customizable. I'd be downgrading if I upgraded to 4.0 to be honest. I want to see what new hardware features the new iphone has before I decide I'd want to upgrade (and have to jailbreak again) or say hello to EVO.

Not everyone want to jailbreak... It voids warranty. I know it's pretty cool and will probs do it when I run out of warranty but you can't really compare them

Just the 3G. Sorry to those who still have one. At least you'll be contract eligible come June :)

To be honest, you can't really background on the 3G that well without it getting really sluggish. I dont have winterboard or any themes or really any mobile substrate addons and when I run Safari, my free RAM drops to around 14 and that's just with nothing running extra in the background. Apple doesn't want to even come close to the iPhone running sluggish especially since that is the real fear of multitasking. That being said, I skipped over the 3GS and kept my 3G KNOWING that the new iPhone and 4.0 would be awesome. Let me just say, it was well worth the wait :D

Yeah with my formerly jailbroken 3G it is painful using backgrounder. This should come as no surprise. I'm justing waiting til the next-gen comes out...And then i"ll jailbreak it, lol.

Wait, so multitasking won't be available on the 16GB iPhone 3GS. Or is that referring to the 32 and 64 models of the iPod touch?

I think you can compare them when you have 3G phone multitasking, interactive lockscreen, etc just fine with no or little issue. If a bunch of hackers can make the perfect iphone OS then how come apple can't (won't) even try to come close.

I have been using the same warranty excuse myself... But honestly I am getting sick of watching jailbreakers do things I can only dream about with a stock OS.

Same here. Skipped 3GS as well waiting for the new phone. Now if the new iphone this summer has a better screen, camera, casing. I'd be happy. But if they come out with some weak hardware modifications, there are other phones out there calling my name.

The lack of multitasking in the 3G is going and apple blocking it is the exact same BS why the 2G iphone could not do MMS and 3G can not do video recording.

If some one can come up with a reasonable excuse for blocking MMS on the 2G iphone and video recording on 2G and 3G then I might accept blocking it on the 3G. Other wise it is pure BS and greed on apple part.

RIM, Palm and Android phones all can do multitasking for years since before the 3G came out so clearly it is not the excuses apple is giving.

A little off topic, but just to reply to something you mentioned which kind of backs up your points to an extent.

I can record video on my iPhone 3G using the iVideoRecorder app and in daylight conditions outside you get 20fps easily. I've used the app to record videos of my two black Labradors bounding around Troon beach here in Scotland, and the quality is superb. It's not as good as the 3GS obviously, but it's not pixellated and is smooth to the extent of being comfortably watchable with no loss of detail.

You can even export to your Camera Roll and use the Trim interface found on the 3G to trim your videos.

My questions is this: if the Android phone Nexus one has 512 memory, why the heck doesn't apple put more memory in their phones and have true multitasking or at the very least allow the phones to survive a round or two of software upgrades?

Did people really expect to be multitasking with the 3G? My 3G is starting to show its age with some of the newer apps coming out that take advantage of the faster processor and more memory of the 3GS. The Navigon GPS app I hear works very well with the 3GS but on my 3G it's quite a bit slow to load and stutters from time to time if I'm playing music on it at the same time.

I would imagine having multiple apps open at the same time would not be an experience I would enjoy. I plan to get the new iPhone coming out this summer and move this one to backup, give to the wife, or even to my two year old who absolutely loves to play with my iPhone.

Not sure why 3G users are so surprised. Probably should have seen this coming. It's not like you're completely left in the dark. You still get 4.0. And hey if you want multitasking, jailbreak and unlock your phone, sell it on ebay and you'll make more than enough to upgrade come June/July.

Personally, I'm glad I didn't upgrade to the 3GS. Now I'll upgrade to the iPhone HD, and get the speed as well as a host of better features (better than a compass hopefully;)). The 3GS was a nice spec bump, but as I predicted a year ago, nothing came of it until the next iPhone.

If anyone should be pissed it should be the 3GS owners. It took Apple an entire year to do something with the extra speed, and now when 3GS owners finally get the software they deserve....a better phone is out!

The 3G owners can at least upgrade and get 4.0 as well as the "A+ upgrade" that will be the iPhone HD.

I might be wrong but don't the 2G and 3G basically have the same amount of memory and CPU speed?
If that's the case, why won't the 2G get the update to begin with?

I have both the 2G, which I'm using, and a 3GS that has reception problems and needs to be replaced. I love the features. I just don't like how the original iPhone is being left out of the whole thing.

Do you think jailbreakers will be able to port the multitasking onto iphone 3g. Didn't they do something like that for MMS.

Ah, yes... I have a 3GS and I can still upgrade to the "A+" model this summer, if I so chose too.

Sure you can. If you want to spend the $$$$. Anyone can get pretty much anything they want if money isn't a factor.

While the iPhone isn't a cheap investment by any means, adding $500-600 on top of the plan every year puts it out of many consumers price range.

It's Apple trying to give 2G users one final push into upgrading and leaving the original model behind.

There's no excuse for not giving original iPhone users the 4.0 update if they're giving it to 3G users. There's only one reason ... to hammer the final nail into the original iPhone's coffin and force it's owners to move on.

Which, being honest, is unfair if you're happy with your device.

It's referring to the iPod touch. Parenthesis generally refers to the thought right before it in a list.

Makes sense considering there's no such thing as a 3rd generation 16 GB iPod touch and a 64 GB 3G S. And if it was in order they'd say respectively.

Anyway, I figured that since they optimized backgrounding that they'd allow it on the 3G. I know that backgrounding with 3G with jailbreaking was a nightmare, but since they only allow certain parts of an app to background, I figured it'd be enough.

I wonder if the jailbreakers would be able to hack the 3G S firmware onto the 3G and 2G.
