I wonder what everyone uses at Apple HQ? Everyone on a shiny new iMac?

They use iPad Pros of course....In rose gold...while driving around in the prototype Apple cars...

RIP Mac Pro. We loved you so. :(
Hi Apple, here's 3500 cash on the table. So eh.. can I get a modern iMac?
Oh ok.. eh alternatives? Macbo.. no sorry, that configuration in Europe is now nearly 4000 euro, and doesn't have a 27" monitor.. Oh a mac pro? but it's 1100 days old almost, mac mini.. never mind.
I will just invest the 3500 in 2 year old hardware .. just kidding.. one last years 1200 macbook pro 13" please.. #cry

Yah, i feel kinda lost right now. It's a lot of money, for that amount of money: why accept a compromise or even invest another 500, or 1500 for the external monitor

I wish they would give us the courtesy of at least announcing it's discontinued so we can all know 100% that we should move on

Yes, Apple, please just come out and say the Mac Pro is done, finished, kaput if it is never going to see an update. It's quite unbelievable that it has been over 1,000 days since the last Mac Pro update. Shame on you Apple. For a company that wants you to believe they are on the cutting edge of technology, it is quite embarrassing and dissapointing that their flagship computer has been ignored. It's also very sad that Apple has seemingly abandoned their core market of serious computer users -- users that gravitated toward Apple because they, Apple, made the best computers on the market. It seems that Apple is hellbent on their desire to make the thinnest and lightest products with a disregard for what actually makes a great Apple Desktop computer. Just thinner, lighter, and mobile at all costs. I love using my iPhone 7 Plus, iPad Pro, Mac Book Pro (and, of course, my trash can Mac Pro) but I wish Apple showed the same passion for the Mac Pro as they do for their mobile devices. To add Mac Pro insult to Mac Pro injury, Apple has a cash reserve of hundreds of billions of dollars. They could invest many tens of millions of dollars in a dedicated Mac Pro division and just deliver the best-ever, state-of-the-art Mac Pro -- to blow away any Windows system -- if they so desired for their core professional desktop users. If they currently are doing such a thing, you would think you'd consistently see the Mac Pro get updated on a more frequent schedule. But, alas, there seems to be no desire to do, or produce, such a thing. As a Mac Pro user for many years, I believe that Apple seems to have forgotten what made Apple great; and that is very sad to see.

The issue isn't simply the lack of Mini or Pro; it's also the pre-existing lack of a mid range desktop.

I'm not a power user, but the Mini is too limited for me. But the current Pro is both overkill and beyond my budget. I bought a 2010 MPro last month, realising that the Mini line was being ignored, and is stupidly expensive at the high end. Spending £200 on SSD and HDs give all I need. Apple could meet the needs of many mid-range users with a mini-tower. . . . . Now I'm just fanatising . . . .

There's no chance it's happening this year now. The new MBP's aren't ready to ship until mid November and they announced those yesterday. You're waiting until March next year now or maybe even WWDC in June, if ever.
They made a bold statement: a source who works closely stated Apple will bring out in November. It's near November...but oh well.

I'm almost surprised they didn't kill off the MP yesterday. The pitch they made about the connectivity options yesterday, that you can connect two big stunning 5k displays to these new MBP's is a pretty strong hint where they see the future.

Oh yeah..i can see that as well. Early in Tim's career stated that he wanted to go mobile...so it's not surprising...but...at least he should tell those users what the status is.

No new or updated iMacs, Mac pro, Mini... (weird considering it was a Mac event), laptops with no function keys.. but the big news - you'll be able to play Minecraft on your TV. wOOt. That was worth watching till the end.

4, count them 4, Thuderbolt ports so you can buy several USB adaptors for $49/each? Time to start researching Windows machines or hope that my mid 2013 MBP never dies. My problem is that I have such a huge investment in MacOS software and really don't want to have to rent the Adobe suite when I have an older Mac Version that works just fine.
Buy an old windows version on eBay. I will not rent software either.

There are some very successful and very powerful X99 based hackintosh builds out there too, so possible to have it both ways. Most pros and shops are very anal about updating their OS. When something is not broke, you don't fix it. So a good stable hack can potentially last you a long while, at least until you are ready to upgrade again. I have no doubt that Apple will eventually break hackintoshing, not directly but organically via the addition of things like the Touch Bar, little proprietary co-processors and secure enclaves that the OS will eventually rely on to function. Luckily, that is a ways away yet. Apple released a new Mac today that doesn't have any of that, so we're probably safe for 2 - 3 more major OS releases. Even if macOS 10.13 broke hackintoshing for good, you could certainly get by for a time without having to upgrade, and/or dual boot Windows as you transition.

Agreed. I'd just be concerned about what would happen if a big security risk was found and a patch was needed. Hackintosh is a great personal project for many people, but I couldn't rely on it for my business. If you are happy with the small potential risk however then it's a good compromise and you'll get a wicked fast machine.

Ok that is the end of the road for me. I am buying a PC.
I really wanted a Mac Pro, but not willing to pay old hardware for the same original price. I could be OK with just a mediocre spec bump. I could also be OK with just a mention in yesterday's event, even if it is released sometime next year...But I do need to do hard 3D animation work and I feel Apple is not commited to professionals anymore.

I am sure that the new Macbook Pro is the best laptop in the market now. But I do not need it. I need a computer as powerful as possible, without any limitation about size or battery life, so I can finish my work in the fastest possible way and get some decent sleep.

Well guys, let's get over it. The nMP is finished! Don't know if that has already been mentioned, but look here: http://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/ Look at the computers they are displaying along with THE software that actually SCREAMS for a workstation. Compressor with an iMac vs a potentially much more capable machine? Cmon, you want to waste your time?

So, do you see a MP anywhere?

And as another Poster already mentioned the nMP is a HUGE design failure, disrespecting one of THE most basic laws in design: "form follows function". Instead, now it is "function follows form". And yes Jony Ive is totally overrated since he even does not seem to know the basic 101s of well done (industrial) design.

And since Apple bragged a lot about the redesign (see: "Can't innovate anymore, my ass blah blah bla"), they would have a hard time going back to a more sane approach without admitting this devastating failure. Even worse, they have done it before (see: "cube").

Sad to say, and I do really hope that I am wrong. Otherwise, I just hope hackintoshes will remain a viable option for the future. Imho, the only remaining one for replacing the cMPs - besides defecting to WIN10, ugh! Am running such a machine for > 3 years now and while it can be quite a hassle esp with upgrading macOS - if it runs, it runs very well. Seems like Apple does not want my money - so they won't get it, period.

Half a year ago, when I became serious about 3D Simulation I temporarily (or so I thought) switched from my beloved iMac to a used and almost 3 year old HP Z 620 Workstation with dual Xeons, 96GB of RAM and a Nvidia GTX 970. It cost me 1800€. I did that because at the time I thought the Mac Pro was a rip off considering the age of the internals compared to it's price.
I had my hopes up at yesterdays event not to immediately get a new one but to at least get it mentioned in a manner like "we care, blabla, new internals / upgrade / whatever coming in the first half of 2017"
That would have been awesome and completely acceptable.
But the event came, was pretty lame and went without even the slightest hint or mention.
So I guess it is safe to assume they stopped caring about people who need such a machine and will silently kill it.
This is sad for so many reasons.
I guess my temporary solution was probably not so temporary.
Good bye Mac.
F*** you Apple.

Thanks for that link, that really is telling. When you connect all the clues it is becoming more and more apparent that the Mac Pro is dead (or at least not significant to Apple to bother with). Very sad indeed:(

Fair enough, but "Zero Support" is essentially what the current Mac Pro is today, so the Hackintosh Risk is not really as bad as it sounds....

And not entirely true! There is quite a huge community nowadays. Just head over to http://www.insanelymac.com and start asking. But yes, sometimes it's not for the faint of the heart esp. for beginners and you should have some more advanced knowledge (or be ready to learn!). But if you are willing to take the plunge, are able to build your own machine using parts where it is known that they work OK these machines can run *very* reliable with basically (almost) no difference to a real Mac. And it can be also be quite useful and rewarding to gain more knowledge. Basically Hackintoshers know much more about their systems and macOS than the average Mac user!

Anyways, what are the alternatives?

PS: and "crime"? "crime"? Cmon. There is no crime (like murder and shoplifting) and Apple basically still profits more than they loose. Otherwise I would be out of the Ecosystem completely, and it also can attract new users. Basically Apple has done nothing so far trying to shut this down. Only thing you really shouldn't do is trying to make money out of it.

Long time lurker (and Mac user), first time poster…

I feel for all you professionals who have invested in Mac hardware and software and rely on it to make a living. I've owned dozens of Macs over the years including several Power Mac and Mac Pro towers and even the 17 inch MacBook Pro (man, what a machine that was).

The writing was on the wall for me several years ago when Apple, after a long period of neglect, discontinued Aperture. I made a living back then from professional photography and had gone all in with Apple. Big mistake. Between that and thousands of documents created in the last version of Pages that would no longer open (and a new version of the program that had been completely dumbed down) combined with the debacle of the Final Cut Pro X release, I knew Apple wasn't serious about pro users any more.

Have you seen the latest version of the Mac page on the Apple website?

http://www.apple.com/mac/

Scroll the page down. MacBook Pro, MacBook, iMac. That's it. No mention whatsoever of the MacBook Air, Mac Mini or Mac Pro – it's as if they don't exist. They will still sell you them via the links to the store at the top of the page, of course, but that's clearly the end of the line for those machines. They are dead.

It's a sad, sad day but one I saw coming. I migrated completely over to Windows around a year ago and haven't looked back. I still have to keep a Mac around as part of my work (and, when this dies, I don't know what I'll do as I feel angry at having to purchase any of the current models at their UK prices) but, for all my day-to-day computing, I'm on PC now.

Like I said, you guys who depend on this platform have my sympathy and I hope you can find a way to somehow deal with Apple's abandonment of your custom.
