Agreed. This is simply a way to claim that they have the most MP in their phone.

You guys must be ******** me if you think 41 MP is just a gimmick.

Please go see 808 pureview videos and come back.

This will take a big brick on any phone in the market by far. If you don't think is is revolutionary camera, then you can't be pleased.

This whole year has been filled with minor spec updates and gimmicks. The only phone remotely decent has been the one.

Although I understand MP isn't everything when it comes to a camera....

I'd rather a company claim it has the the most MP in a phone, rather that claim it has the thinnest or lightest phone. I'm getting a little sick of that trend. Almost every phone I've used the past couple years has been too thin and too light for my comfort.

But yeah I totally acknowledge that 41 MP is gratuitous, especially in a phone, and even more especially without the proper optics, light sensors, etc.

I think that a lot of companies, Nokia among them, are just trying to completely bridge that gap between phone and camera. I don't know why, and I don't think it will ever truly be possible, but they keep on trying. As phone tech improves, so does camera tech, and a serious stand alone camera will always take better pictures. Now putting Android or another OS on a camera, that's easy. But putting serious camera hardware on a phone, that's another story.

The average joe just wants decent pics from their phone. I see people take pictures with iPads on a regular basis- obviously they're not going for pro shots. Most people don't know good photography when they see it, and Instagram pretty much killed off any chance of that ever changing.

It sure is a gimmick :rolleyes:

It's not, but if you really need a tremendous camera, go buy a Point and Shoot.

This lens + Amber update = will make it the best smartphone camera for 2013 & 2014... maybe 2015 unless Nokia keeps innovating.

It will have the best camera, but it's a shame it will be neutered by mediocre Windows Phone.

It's bad timing to release 'flagship' Windows Phones now anyway. They basically have the same spec as a year ago... Windows Phone will have an update toward the end of the year, to allow for better spec in their phones. Then you'll see quad-core, newer GPU, 1080p screens, etc.

You DONT need optical zoom when you hae 41 megapixels. That's the point zoom without quality loss.

:D:D:D
I'm subscribing to this thread to get more great photography wisdom like this!

Anyone want to buy my 70-200 F 2.8l ? There is no need for optical zoom when you have lots of megapixels!

Nokia 808 is still the best smartphone camera on the planet right now and it got released a whole year ago.

Problem is, as a jack of all trades, a smartphone is usually not just focused on camera. Camera alone isn't enough.

If this 41mp was on ios or android, those phones would be off the shelves much faster.

its funny how you keep talking about the camera. camera this, camera that. yeah sure, it has a better camera, but that alone wont help it beat out powerhouses from samsung, htc, and apple. i have tried windows phone, and while i did like it, i have to say, it isnt ever going to take off and beat out android and ios in sales. not before, not now, not ever. its just not going to happen.

and if you believe that one magical day, windows phone is going to win above all, then thats nice, but clearly no one (or at least only an incredibly minute amount) in this thread/ forum thinks the same way. there really is no point for you to keep defending a nokia phone in an apple forum, since you arent going to convince anyone, and even if you do manage to sway the minds of a few that a nokia windows phone will one day be better than ios/android, one simple fact remains: it wont ever happen. it just wont. unless of course, nokia goes down the android road.

I've been waiting for this phone. Only thing I don't like is they removed the inductive charger from the back.

Far as everyone talking about how 41 mp sucks or is overkill, you're not gonna get an optical zoom on a smartphone because no OEM is gonna stick a motor in your phone. So unless you can over sample like you can on the EOS you're stuck with a digital zoom that sucks because of all the garbage it introduces.

This includes the iPhone 5s or S4 or all the other phones that were mentioned in this thread. Your digital zoom is useless compared to the EOS's

Well, I'm sure Nokia will update their EOS flagship to the latest goodies late this year / early next year. However, I've been waiting for more than a year for an, apart from the inability to record calls and, presumably, not having any kind of hi-res video out (while the 808 has a dedicated micro HDMI port too), enhanced and vastly superior WP version of the 808. I will be purchasing the new Nokia EOS as soon as it hits the shelves, assuming it doesn't produce worse quality than the 808's sensor + electronics and the 928's OIS combined. I just don't want to wait any longer - and I think a lot of camera fans are thinking the same.

Also add that, in lower-MP modes, the 808 uses full sensor oversampling, which results in the total lack of moire / aliasing and in as good a resolution as possible. And, yes, the same FoV as in stills mode - unlike on the iPhone or Galaxies, where only the center area of the sensor is utilized, even w/o EIS activated on the latter.

Out of curiosity, how big would pictures from this camera be? How much space would each photo take?

Depends. 6-8 Mbytes if you record into 34 or 38 Mpixel images (16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio). If you record into 5 or 8 Mpixel images (the latter only has slightly less details than the 38 Mpixel version and many-many times better than anything Bayesian, including other smartphones), they'll be around 1-2 Mbytes.

EDIT
: made a mistake: the 34/38 Mpixel ones are around 14-16 Mbytes. See for example the ones at http://www.dpreview.com/articles/8083837371/review-nokia-808-pureview/6 ; for example, http://www.dpreview.com/galleries/r...260?inalbum=nokia-808-pureview-review-samples

We have a 50mp Hasselblad here in the studio and its raw files are about 100-150mb each.

The pureview 808 41mp (7728 x 5368) shots were 16mb roughly.

A lot more manageable.

LOL, I beg to differ. Check out this bad boy Samsung released back in the day.

I don't think my 808 shoots RAW. At least I don't see the setting for it. All I see are resolution settings, but the output is always in JPEG.

In case of PureView, 41 megapixels are not a myth. Nokia 808 produces incredible images in good daylight. The end result is 5 or 8MP image, but with incredibly sharp and high quality.

Just have a look at this,

http://www.esato.com/phonephotos/cam/nokia/808_pureview/20130603104820f6x9.jpg

Zoom in to 100% and have a look. Great quality and no noise.

It's too bad though that such a camera is wasted on a Windows Phone. If Nokia released an Android phone with this camera, it would've been definitely worth considering.

I wonder if they upgraded the camera further and added OIS to it.
