930 is the only one announced so far, but the 1520 is not even 6 months old. I think the new phablet will be announced by Q4

The 930 is the global version of the Icon (929), and since VZW has the exclusive I wonder if the 930 will be available in the US.

I know it. I was speaking about a future successor of the Lumia 1520, not yet announced ...

BTW, the Icon is a VZW exclusive, why do you think they can't sell the 930 via other channels like Best Buy ?

Generally, if a US carrier has negotiated an exclusive deal with an OEM, there is no way to buy a device at any other shop in the US. Retailers like Best Buy and Radio Shack sell for use on specific carrier networks--don't usually see unlocked devices. So, you might be able to buy a device for full retail and request it be unlocked, but because the major US carriers use different technology (Verizon and Sprint using legacy CDMA networks) and radio frequencies, there's very little cross network compatibility. If devices are compatible with other networks, it's usually AT&T and T Mobile since they both use GSM for their voice networks, but more often than not, you will see limited data connectivity, again because of different radio frequencies.

Unless Nokia offers a version of the 930 specifically compatible with AT&T or T Mobile's networks, the only way to get one is to import and then it likely won't have LTE functionality. It's the same situation right now for Sony's newest devices. I'd like to try an Xperia Z1 Compact and can get one imported but it will only have HSPA compatibility with AT&T's networks and I won't have any warranty coverage.

The exclusive deal is for the Icon, not the Lumia 930. They are quite similar, but not the same model, so I can't see a reason to not have unlocked 930s on US market.
The international version of 930 already is compatible with at&t and T-Mobile networks, LTE bands included.
Don't you have Z1 Compact in US ???? WHY ?!

Nokia's are usually great in low light conditions: why do you think the icon is not?
Many of the reviews of the Icon have touched upon this where there is a lag between hitting the button and taking the picture. Lower light conditions exacerbate the problem.

TBH, I don't know clean low light images are, i.e., noise, as I've not taken any yet. Perhaps I'll play with it this weekend, import the images into Aperture and see how they are.

My understanding is the Icon is just the Verizon version of the 930 (or the 930 is just the GSM version of the Icon, however one chooses to look at it) so if, in fact Verizon has some sort of exclusivity agreement, I'm sure it includes not offering the 930 through other US carriers for a time period. Again, all just assumptions on my part based on past scenarios.

I hadn't looked specifically at the 930's frequency compatibility so if they did include LTE compatible with US carriers, that's great news. Unfortunately, we generally don't see unlocked devices available at retail outlets and only occasionally via online stores so it'll likely be a bit more expensive if import is required. I really do hope we see it here as it's the first WP device that really captures my complete interest. The 1520 is a great device but just too big for my tastes.

And sadly, outside of the Xperia Z1S (an exlusive version of the Z1 for T Mobile that was released months after the global release) and the Z Ultra GPE, we haven't seen recent Sony offerings (Z1, Z1 Compact, Z2). And no announcement of future release dates either. :(

I'd wait until the 1025 or 1030. Which should be released in July.

I'd like that even better, especially if it kept the same size/form factor (or close to it) of the 1020. I like smaller phones--130mm or less in length is my personal sweet spot--and I'd really be intrigued by the camera paired with a newer CPU. :D

Your carrier subsidized policy is suffocating your market

When is the 930 supposed to be available? Will Italy be getting it at the initial release? If they do, will you buy one and send it to me? I'll pm you the money. :D:D

Well, Microsoft shot down my request to donate. Sorry guys, it really sucks that Android and Microsoft seem to stick to the US for most cool things.

I'm quoting the email here, instead of a PM for the benefit of everyone that reads this thread:
Hi Lloyd,

This is Lester from Bing Rewards Customer Support assisting you with Service Request number 1243888112.

I understand that you are inquiring if you could donate Bing Rewards credits to your friends who reside outside the United States so they could redeem the OneDrive reward since they could not join Bing Rewards.

Lloyd, we appreciate your concern for your friends to help them redeem the OneDrive reward however, please be informed that it is stated on our Terms Of Use (http://bing.com/rewards/tou) that credits could not be transferred from one account to another.

Also, even if it is allowed to transfer credits (which is not), your friends would not be able to use them since they need a Bing Rewards account to store those credits and since they are residing outside the United States, they won't be able to create a Bing Rewards account. The entire Bing Rewards is limited only to the residents of the US.

I hope I was able to explain things clearly.

Sincerely,

Lester
The Bing Rewards Team

^ Thanks Lloyd for trying to donate them regardless. It was very courteous of you :)

No worries. Just think it is pretty stupid for a company like Microsoft (with its vast server farms) not to allow something like virtual drives/currency/points to anyone, where ever they may live? If Apple can do it, surly Microsoft can.

That's part of it, for certain, though the major US carriers have been making a concerted push over the past six months away from the carrier subsidy model. The bigger problem is having 4 major carriers using different technology (CDMA vs. GSM) and very little overlap in frequencies. Consequently it means that unless an locked device has a huge amount of frequency camparibility and can support both CDMA and GSM (since there is little to no VOLTE support), you still have very little choice where to use that unlocked device.

Indeed, I don't think anything beats the verizon iphone 5 / 5S
lte on verizon, or hspa+ on ATT / Tmobile (non-aws?)

Italy is usually in the first batch of countries , and WP market share is quite high here ... But I'm worried about the pmmed money :D
