hello
I have a new Mac Pro 2019. I noticed that when I put it to sleep after 45 mins or even 2 hours, the fans turn on,
not fast, but I can hear them, I contacted apple but so far no resolution.

I did afresh OS instal and didn't add anything , and after 45 mins the fans came on in sleep.

apple thought it might be software playing badly, but they still come on with nothing added.

on a side note I installed the stats menu demo and it does not show the temperature or fans or CPU temp.

I have unplugged the power for 15 then plugged back in etc but no difference.

I did add a PCIE card for m.2 ..but I have tried it with out it and still the same.

the other thing I added was 4 sticks of apple ram from Some one else's new Mac Pro and they are in the correct slots and all green tick.
I only mention this for full picture. but I don't think ram could make the fans turn on in sleep right ?

thanks for any light anyone can shed on this

got any print jobs in your print queue? does the machine have any form of sharing enabled (file, screen etc), is bluetooth set to be able to wake from sleep? turn off wifi & unplug ethernet cable, does it still do it?

no print jobs, its fresh instal of OS..

it uses bluetooth keyboarders and mouse .. why would having these on to wake not be part of the apple way things work ? I didn't do any Changes .. its factory instal ..surely they can't expect me to turn stuff off from instal to stop it from fan spinning in sleep mode ?

apple wont tell me if the fans should come on in sleep if the room is hot .. I'm guessing this isn't an issue either .. so I'm stumped

The macOS bluetooth driver is pretty notorious for being flakey. It always has been. Allowing bluetooth devices to wake a Mac is an almost guaranteed way to cause weird insomnia issues. Especially if you have the machine under a desk, or arranged in a way that would allow anything to interfere with the bluetooth signals. My 2009 had no problems with bluetooth when it was on my desk, sideways behind my displays - line of sight to bluetooth keyboard & trackpad. Moved it to under a desk, where the machine's chassis was between the peripherals and the bluetooth antenna, and line of sight was gone - insomnia issues, machine would wake up in the middle of the night for no reason.

Just try turning off allowing bluetooth devices to wake the machine, and see what happens. You can set it to wake with the power button.

You should also be able to check the logs in console.app (assuming you're allowed to with the current OS builds) and it will tell you the wake reason - you might see Bluetooth USB AHCI or something similar.

Remember, the fact that something is designed, or intended to work a certain way, does not mean that's the way it actually works in practice.

I remember one era in which machines would wake partially due to bluetooth devices, but be on a black screen, completely unresponsive - the only way to know they were actually running (apart from hearing the fan) was to ssh in - the remote access server would be running, but not the local display server.

thanks for the reply.

it doesn't wake.. its still asleep , blank screen .. but the fans just turn on.
would blue tooth turn on fans but not wake it up ?

I will def try turn off allow bluetooth to wak and use the power button .. trouble is each time I test it , it takes 2 hours usually before the fans come on ! means I can't do anything each time lol..

when you pay 8k for a Mac you kinda expect it to work out of the box lol.
every Mac ivar had though hs has some problem and needed to be replaced or my last iMac had to have its screen replaced after 4 years a sit was turning pink at the edges !

will report back!

if you've got another machine, it might be worth seeing if you can ssh into it when it's in that state, to see if the macos part of the system is actually awake or not - I'm wondering if the t2 part was responsible for it etc.

Do you have 'Power Nap' enabled?
If so, the Mac is doing just what it needs to do while 'Sleeping' (Power Nap).

well I tried turning off bluetooth can wake and more or less dead on 2 hours thefts come on !

why is it mostly dead on 2 hours that it comes on ?

could it just be faulty machine or faulty sensors ? if no one else gets this and its a fresh instal with nothing added

I may have missed it, but didn't see: do the fans *stay* on, or do they turn back off for a while after a few min?

In addition to Power Nap that @Wando64 mentioned, Macs will also periodically turn on for a moment if "Wake for network access" in Energy Saver is enabled. This is so that they can advertise their location on the network every so often. I believe this happens around once per hour, but don't know the exact schedule or randomness to it. Forty-five minutes to 2 hrs would seem to be in that window to me.

hi
the fans turn on exactly 2 hours after sleep .. and I waited to serif they off after 5 mins they stayed on for 30 mins before I gave up and un slept it.

I have unchecked all in energy saver :) I have un checked allow bluetooth to wake

I took out the pcie card that I installed with m.2 .. I tried this before no luck, but this time I also took out the extra 4 sticks 8gb apple ram I added .. still fans come on in sleep at 2 hours . unplugged any internet .. and nothing connected.
its usually 2 hours but noticed it come on after 45 mins once.

I am stumped, I think the Mac Pro must be faulty ,its only 1 week old.. and fresh instal of Catalina latest ..

I have the option to replace it , but I would rather not have the hassle. its so heavy that I don't even want to take it into repair in town.

I have looked on all the forums and cant see anyone with this problem.

an £8k Mac Pro shouldn't be having fans go on when asleep .. :-(

Write down the time you hear the fans come on! Then once you back in Mac launch the Console app and see what process is trying to get out or stuck!

ok so I know the fan went on a 9:01
what do I look for in console ?

I can't see it doing anything anywhere at 9:01

in istats menu it shows that the cpu was not used until 8:58 - 8:59 .5% of the USER and .8% of system cpu was used
then . I wonder what made it do something ?

My Mac Pro does this as well. However, I don't know how much time has passed when it starts to spin. I put my Mac to sleep and go to bed and when I wake up the next morning I can hear the fans spinning.

Definitely interested in what's triggering the fan.

interesting.. so it might not just be me. there's no reason the fans should come on. I looked at istats menu and it shows before the fans come on 0.8% cpu use and 0.3% user cpu.. no idea what's causing this , but for me its dead on 2 hours after sleep.

apple are being really cagey .. I asked them out right should the fans come on every time I sleep it ?
no direct answer .. just questions

also I looked inside the shell casing and in one corner there's a black strip of plastic stuck on , but with mine it was half unstuck and folded in half hanging off .. that's doesn't seem very premium to me.. why do they have a bitof plastic stuck on when the other owners are moulded ? .. that's concerning too.
not a great start for an £8k new Mac Pro :-(

Why not try booting it in single user mode, and then sleeping it overnight - that would ensure there were no drivers for anything 3rd party etc - that's probably going to at least let you eliminate a host of things are being contributors.

Otherwise, hate to say it, but first generation Apple product - thats what it is to own one.

yeah lol
many Macs ice bought had a problem and needed to be replaced. my last 5k iMac had a screen problem when I got it, the replacement developed a pink tinge around the edges after 4 years and had to have a new screen, the iMac before that had a problem too .. I remember owning a black MacBook and the power unit buzzed a high pitch noise .. ughhh.

the machine looks beautiful. I still can't get over the cheap plastic stuck inside lol over time everyones will start to come apart , mark my words.

it doesn't sound like everyone Mac Pro has fans going when sleeping, maybe because they don't sleep it , or they don't hear it ..
cheers

Is this you, Anthony? :)

One aspect I might have thought of from this is that you cloned your OS directly from another Mac device. And while this may be okay as the new Mac should reset itself with the proper drivers, I'm thinking there might be some process it inherited from the previous Mac and it's confusing the Mac Pro.

It's just a theory. But personally the only time I use a clone backup is exactly for that purpose - a backup of that exact computer. If it's a different computer altogether, I would rely on the Migration Assistant app or Time Machine. It will install the drivers and operation necessary for your new computer and then migrate your account after.

I would honestly try this route. And if the computer still behaves the same way, I would let Apple know what's going on as a replacement may be necessary.

Every 5,1 and 6,1 Mac Pro I've had does this too. I don't know what causes it. It's something the OS is doing. Disabling Power Nap helps, but it doesn't prevent it from doing things while it's "sleeping."

That's weird, my 4,1 ->5,1 sleeps like a log. Bluetooth wake is disabled, and all sharing options are disabled.

My older Mac Mini, which is remotely administered, wakes every few hours, for about a minute or so. It's set to sleep if idle for more than a few minutes, so if it fails to sleep itself as a result of finishing network resource polling, the power management settings put the pillow back to its face.

Something I'd also check on the Mac Pro - how is its network set up? Does it have a fixed ip address, or is its MAC bound to a fixed address by your DHCP allocator etc?

hi there Raymond .

no, I freshly installed Catalina via the apple R mode and it gets downloaded from apple to instal. I don't add anything
so its factory fresh but still fans come on after 2 hours exactly.

I've been talking with apple n twitter and trying different ideas but its been a week and nothing works.
I also found that the plastic inside of the case shell is unstuck and hanging so not happy with that .
why have a flaw to such a well engineered product?

pretty sure its gonna be swapped now .. if the new one has the same problem of fans ... then apple have a bug I guess.

I have tried everything, nothing is connected, I pulled out internet cord so network interruptions.

every thing I do different then test takes two hours to see if it works .. nothing has

it could just be a fault fan sensor or something physical ..

Now you got me wondering about mine. I have not heard the fans on mine except when I ran Diagnostic mode. Even with the machine on, I have to get my ear within a couple inches to hear anything.

I have my display set to sleep after 15 minutes
PowerNap on
Put hard discs to sleep on
Bluetooth wake-up on
Printer Sharing for one printer on

When mine goes to sleep, it is "out-cold". It went to sleep about 4 hours ago, but after reading this I went over to the MacPro to check this. Had to get a flashlight to see the impellers in the fans and all three front fans were stopped. As soon as I hit the spacebar key, all three fans started up, but I could not hear them without almost pressing my ear against the case - I could actually barely feel the airflow before I heard anything!

All but two of my PCI slots have cards added and I have two hard drives in a Sonnet j3i as well. Still running just the stock 32GB Ram.

I have heard this from many people, that they have to put an ear to the machine to hear the fans.
I am in a quiet room with it on my desk and as soon as I turn it on I can hear the fans from 3 feet away!
I may just have sensitive hearing but to have to put your ear up against it to hear them , makes it sound like mine are not working properly. when I put it to sleep the fans go off but come on again in exactly 2 hours! and I hear them 6feet away to notice they're on.
thanks for the info. looks like im gonna have to go through the process of exchange after 10 days of having it.

I'm curious about the plastic on the case shell. Can you show a photo? I wonder if that plays a part in not properly signalling that the case is properly shut and therefore triggering the fans to spin? Regardless Apple should send you a replacement shell - or just have your Mac Pro replaced at this point. It's worth the aggravation for this much money paid.

I have exactly the same issue with the fan coming on in sleep mode. I noticed this from the very beginning before I installed any 3rd party software. Actually it is not the 2 front fans but only the back blower that turns on after about 2 hours. I also tried all of the suggestions posted here before, but no change. I also checked the energy consumption during sleep in the first two hours and after the fan turn on. There is no noticeable difference in power consumption in any of theses states, which leads me to Beläge that to machine is still in deep sleep and was not woken up by some power nap or network activity.

I‘m wondering if this is actually normal behavior of this machine or really has something to do with the room temperature. Will have to wait for winter time to find out.

if you look inside the shell at the bottom, you will see a strip of black plastic on one corner only. this has come unstuck half way up and had folded in half, I just heard a weird noise so investigated .
I will wrap the machine .. now im wondering if I should go for 12 core Vega II instead of my 16 core w5700x ?
its glitchy in DaVinci compared to a 16 core radeon vii hackintosh that cost £1800 :-( ( but wasn't stable)

I have asked apple direct and they will not answer the simple question :
"when I turn on a fresh new Mac Pro and sleep it, is it normal for the fans to come on exactly after 2 hours of sleep ?'

so yes it seems the machine is still in sleep when the fans come on, but why do they come on exactly 2 hours after sleep ? its can't be room temperature because that differs . also my istat menu shows no activity for 2 hours then 1 min before fans, it shows cpu 0.8% and user 0.5% ... so something is happening . could be faulty sensors, could be faulty T2 chip that everybody hates.

if apple will not give me a straight answer and the next one has the same problem .. I may have to think again about Mac Pro .
