Correct me if Im wrong, but isn't the 5.4" supposedly going to be the same size as the iPhone 8 as well?

Nope. It's supposed to be a touch bigger overall than the SE but smaller than the 8 whilst getting a full screen and smaller notch (not pictured). In reality, people are not going to notice coming from an SE, it's like having a very, very thin case on the SE. If that's not small enough, people are out of luck as I don't see other manufacturers catering for the people who want a small device (that's actually worth having).

And this is the original SE placed inside of the rumoured 5.4" chassis. The red part is the new phone. Literally, the same as a thin case.

There's still some confusion/debate as to how large the 5.4" model will be. Here's a MacRumors post talking about the upcoming iPhone 12 lineup:
kuo-iphone-2020-2021-800x460.jpg

If you look at the screenshot that is featured, it shows the 5.4" iPhone 12 alongside a 4.7" iPhone. I think some misinterpreted that to mean that the 5.4" iPhone 12 would be roughly the same physical size as the *old* SE (because, at the time that screenshot was taken, the new SE wasn't out yet). But note that above the phones it states "2020". So that is actually the 2020 iPhone SE. So, this rumored 5.4" iPhone 12 will actually be about the same physical size as the just-released 2020 iPhone SE, but with an edge-to-edge (plus notch) screen and no TouchID (unless they add a new form of TouchID to the side or back).

So, it's looking like the upcoming high-end iPhone 12 5.4" will not be a smaller phone, after all. And, if this is accurate, it will be *harder* to use one-handed than the 2020 iPhone SE, as the screen will be larger, requiring more awkward thumb-stretching to reach all corners of the screen.

That would kind of make sense it being the same size as the new SE but with all screen display as otherwise they'd have to tool a different (smaller) size. If it is the same size as the new SE they'd be able to use the body of that phone for the 5.4"

They’ll need new tooling regardless as it’s going to be a square sided chassis. They won’t be re using the new SE design again I wouldn’t have thought.

The 6/7/8 size really hit the sweet spot for me. I was excited about the XR when it came out but found the size ridiculously big so I passed. The XS looked cool but pricey. And because both had Face ID only, I just couldn’t see buying them.

Going from a 4S to a 6 was the perfect screen size improvement. I’m quite happy the new SE is similar. Anything bigger in my pocket is just too much.

BTW, I also reject this notion that Apple did "studies" to confirm that everyone wants larger phones. The majority may very well want larger phones

As you should. This company lies through its teeth to come up with basically whatever narrative they want to support what they prefer to do.

We must not forget that the "larger than 4" phone" desires were also out there for years before Apple did anything to cater to it -- not because there wasn't a market demand for it, but simply because Apple was doing what it wanted to.
[automerge]1587252470[/automerge]
Apple doesn't really need to do "studies", they just need to look at their sales distribution. The rumored revamp of 5.4/6.1 iPhone 12 and 6.1/6.7 iPhone 12 Pro suggests most people don't want to pay $1K for a 5.8" phone.

What sort of sales distribution analysis could Apple do test whether or not there is market demand for a sub 4.7" size, modern, iPhone?

I just feel it's odd that everyone wants to hold Zack Morris style bricks these days. Every time I see someone holding a 7" phone to their ear I can't unsee this

zack-morris-phone.jpg

Also, even a 7" display is bad for one's eyes trying to watch hours of TV on it. I hardly use a smartphone as anything other than a simple convergence device--a remote control, a music player, a convenient web search, or a phone, of course. Who watches TV on one?! seriously?

+1 on that - that is where my frustration is.

I simply want the smallest most pocketable iPhone for navigating & music in the car (carplay), taking on walks for podcasts, looking something up real quick, taking a call, snapping some photos, replying to an imessage or two...

I don't need or want a ginormous screen, 4 cameras or LIDAR (which I'm sure is coming next) and I don't need a GPU that rivals gaming consoles and I sure as hell don't want something that is literally the size and weight of a patio paver.

Apple has abandoned people who want a small, light, functional iPhone device. It's very very frustrating.

Well, they already nixed the original SE...

Of course, that could just be due to developer demand. I don't think lots of developers want to keep supporting 4" displays.

That is a concern of mine as we move forward now.

I really hope the classic SE can get one more iOS update at least (iOS 14)

Even if it doesn't, I'll be riding the classic SE until it dies and/or is rendered unusably incompatible....or if that rumored higher end future model truly is physically smaller than the iPhone 8 class 4.7" devices..

Everything that one claims is an advantage of a larger display, a tablet is the proper device. Want to watch videos? grab an iPad, because you'd burn your 11 Pro battery in no time and be holding a super hot phone as well.

It's like when those Sony Watchmans were big. Who wanted to watch TV on a 2.5" display and kill their eyes when there's a perfectly decent 25" console in their living room already?

Also, Apple tends to not follow supply/demand economics. No one was clamering for a touch-screen smartphone in an era of RIM 950s and Treos. They came out with something new and hoped it'd sell--it was a risk that worked out in the end. But even since, Apple tries to change something and hope it still sells. No one is asking for a brick. It's just bricks are all that's being made now. People accept it and don't fight with their wallet

I guess it's not Apple I'm miffed at. It's that everyone copies their lead as if it were the best thing since sliced bread. Apple notch? Android notch. Apple no headphone jack? Android no headphone jack. Apple no small display? now every phone is minimum 6". No free market anymore.

This is the most depressing thing I've heard all day..
Your points all make total sense and I think you're right.

Apple is going to have an entire line up of big, bigger and gigantic, all expensive (save for the SE2) and all heavy, large and unwieldly. What an amazing buzz kill

Why on earth do we need so many bloody iPhones that are all so similar?

No awkward thumb stretch needed. That is why Apple came up with the Reachability feature.

Treating the symptom instead of the problem...

Samsung tried the same thing back when the Note released--one-handed mode. At least the Note is optional--not like every one of their phones mirrors its size
Apple implemented a good solution for people with short fingers who want a
larger phone. With the new SE, I will use the feature instead of constantly whining about how Apple doesn’t make the 4” screen anymore. If after 12 days I find I don’t like the new SE, I will go a different Apple route.

The 4” screen is not coming back to Apple and as much as I like my SE, I say other SE users need to get over it already.

It's ^^ posts that keep this going on. "just get used to it"

Gee I bet that always works right? Why not vote NO and make real change happen? let the free market decide instead of the corps deciding for us and we have to just accept it?

Instead of adding in software features that just admit there's a problem with large displays, why not just do the logical thing and well, make a smaller display? offer it as an additional option? why is that hard? satisfy more people rather than less?

People are already staring into smartphones to a scary degree, that even car infotainment systems are allowing people to twitter while driving, does anyone else find it scary?

The original intent of a smartphone was a convergence device to have one thing to carry instead of countless others. instead of having a separate camera, MP3 player, and remote control the smartphone did all of that in one package. what happened to that?

I don’t care what you buy or don’t buy from Apple. The writing is all over the wall. I wish Apple had made the new SE 4” but, they didn’t. Life goes on. And if the rumors are correct for iPhone 12, there will be no 4” screen. Complaining on the forum will not change what Apple is doing about doing away with the 4” screen.

If you don’t like it, get a different brand phone.
