Apple Support just called me and said apparently 16.1.1 fixes this issue. I have had it installed the last few days I think and from memory haven't noticed any change but I've taken to leaving my phone on silent lately.

I have the same issue on my 14 pro max but it was also on my 13 pro max while typing... it happens sometimes but not all the time.
Mine is fairly frequent unfortunately. And weirdly this issue is WITH AirPods in too, which the loud message notification is not.

Does anyone notice how loud, and I mean very loud the top speaker/ ear speaker is while on a phone call? My 13 pro max was not as loud as the 14 pro max... 13 pro max full call volume was not loud enough and 14 pro max is super loud had to put the volume down on most phone calls. maybe that's the reason the notifications are louder also. At this point I don't know what to think or do anymore...

I don't think so. Apple Support and the Engineering team are pretty shocked at how loud it is.

Also someone measured the sound at being just shy of 120db. That is dangerous to the human ear, being that close to it.

To solve this problem there should be more Apple Support opened issues in this matter. When users don’t complain they have low incentive to fix this.

But your speaker is very loud also. I mean the volume is very loud when you are on a phone call? I don’t know if it’s just mine or 14 pro max ear speaker is louder… very loud

My launch day iPhone 14 Pro Max also has this issue. Glad I found this thread. It happens to all notifications when I’m on a call. iMessage, WhatsApp, WeChat, IG message, etc….

I am having this exact issue with my 14 Pro. I just got off the phone with Apple support and they basically told me that it’s a “feature” and that the iPhone is not doing anything it’s not supposed to be doing. She told me that I could enable “change with buttons” under sounds and haptics and when I’m on a phone call, I can lower the notification sounds and then return them to normal when I get off my phone call, which imo is a crock of bs. Or I can change my text notification sound to a less annoying sound, so that when I get a text notification while on a phone call, it doesn’t “ding” in my ear. Basically, they haven’t fixed it or even acknowledged the issue.

@iamJoshRoth you are not mad!!! This is driving me nuts. It’s also loud when texting with an open call on speaker. The first time a notification went off in my ear I literally had to move the phone away from my ear. I’ve noticed a few issues with the new iPhone 14 Pro Max. Not impressed at all.

I also have this horrendous issue which deafens me every time it happens. It's as bad as the original iphone/android phones that would ring in your ear beofre they put in the proxiity sensors in screens. I have just installed 16.1.2 and will advise if still happens

Should we all share our support case numbers with Apple then when we call Apple we can give them everyone’s case numbers from this thread and perhaps they can link the issues together

Apple should track this “feature” with the Noise App on the Apple Watch like it does with AirPods. They could even consider adding tinnitus detection to the AW 9.

Do we have confirmation yet that this is a Pro-only feature? If offered across the product line I see a great opportunity for an upsell. 😬
