Does anyone know if I can unlock this with another PAYG simcard and then continue to use my o2 sim until the end of my contract? I don't want to lose my o2 settings when I sync with the other sim.

What I'm wondering is what O2 will do if you're bought a PAYG iPhone, but are using a Simplicity Sim? Will they see this as a contract or PAYG? My guess is PAYG since you can leave at any time. But we live in hope.

Yes, that's what I'll be doing in fact. You can request an unlock at any time, and while your still in contract request an unlock and continue using your O2 SIM. Your 'O2 settings as such' won't be affected, whenever you slip in the O2 SIM your iPhone will recognise it and work as normal.

It's interesting that in contract people are allowed the unlock for free. I wonder if this means vodafone and orange wiill offer that right from the beginning. Because by the sounds of it I could take a new contract/new phone with o2 tomorrow and have it unlocked same day.

You've still got to pay the contract for the next 18 months though. At least you can now pop in a local PAYG SIM when you go abroad.

That's fine by me, a contracts a contract. I'm currently jailbroken unlocked (and paying off the remainder of my o2 contract), with a vodafone sim only contract, I'll get a subsidised vodafone contract when iphone4 comes out, but I'd like to be able to carry an orange PAYG sim for orange wednesdays still :)

Wonder if you're gonna have to go through some kind of process if you ever get phone swapped on warranty since its asking for an IMEI

well this is just getting very annoying. You guys in europe get to have unlocked iPhones while in the U.S.A Land of the free *cough get nothing. Well enjoy your unlocks guys :)

The replacement phone should be registered to your contract because they scan the codes for the refurb phone and activate it before you leave the store.

That's what I'm hoping anyway because I've had mine replaced. :)

It's because we've finally got some competition. Exclusive deals suck.

Just got an email regarding the unlock request form I completed earlier today, I have a pay monthly contract 3g BTW:

Hello James

Thanks for getting in touch with us for unlatching code for your iPhone.

James, I understand that you want to get your iPhone unlocked so that you can use it with another Service Providers SIM card.

I'm sorry but currently it isn't possible to unlock the iPhone. Your iPhone is restricted to use only on our network in the United Kingdom. This is the reason we're unable to unlock an iPhone so that it can be used with another providers SIM card.

You can view this information in our iPhone terms and conditions. Here's the link where you can view our iPhone terms and conditions:

http://www.o2.co.uk/termsandconditions/iphone

James, just to let you know, any attempt to unlock an iPhone so that it can be used with another providers SIM card might make it permanently unusable.

I realise this isn't the answer you were looking for, but I hope I've explained everything clearly.

Thanks again for taking time to email us.

Have a lovely evening!

Kind regards

Rahul

Thanks Rahul.

Still 1hr 15 mins to go.

However, as that email has Telefonica spelt wrong as the registered address, I question the validity of that email

Its spelt right on the email - I think the accent on the o got messed up when I copy pasted it.

I changed the font to comic sans - not the best choice I admit.

50 minutes and 23 seconds is about enough time to find my o2 sim and then start walking far enough to be able to pick up a signal to receive the "your phone is now unlocked" text.

If only there wasn't the 14 day waiting period. Obviously just enough time to deal with the thousands of requests they are going to get.

I know where my SIM is as I use it for activations after jailbreaking, but signal, will have to go for a little drive to find that
