I've been searching for a while for the answer to this question. My 3G is currently jailbroken, not unlocked as it's an official O2 contract phone. I need the jailbreak for Cycroder, 3G Unrestrictor etc. If I request the unlock from O2 will it affect the jailbreak. Will I have to restore the phone to official firmware to unlock?

I have an iPhone 3G and have put in an unlock request by submitting the IMEI number on the o2 webpage.

since then i have upgraded to a 3GS and am selling the 3G on ebay.

how will i know when its unlocked? do i have to put my sim back in the 3G and plug into iTunes, or will it just unlock and they send a text message to my number, regardless of which phone im using?

You will get a text message from O2 telling you it's unlocked. When you receive it you will have to connect your iPhone to iTunes to unlock it. You need to connect your old 3G phone because it's that IMEI you gave them when you requested to unlock.

thanks for the reply, that helps

Just thought I would post as didn't see this in this thread, O2 have changed their unlocking policy for PAYG users.

iPhone Pay & Go customers

Yes, you can unlock your iPhone for a one-off cost of £14.69. You'll pay for this from the money topped-up on your phone.

But if you unlock your iPhone less than 12 months after you bought it, we'll take off the free Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On (that we added for the first 12 months). You can buy a Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On for £10 a month when you fill in the unlocking form. Find out more about the Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On here.

Just wondering if anyone could help me, you may have seen my thread about new replacement o2 'locked' Iphone.

Just wondering if my plan of buying a 3G o2 Sim, topping it up by £15, activating it through itunes and then filling out the unlock page on their website would work? (I did this on saturday and have heard nothing yet!)

Does anyone also know how long it actually takes, I mean I know it states 14 days but what sort of timescale is the norm?

Let me know, Thanks.

I've just completed this process. I applied for O2 to unlock my iPhone when they announced its availability. I got a text message saying that it is unlocked on December 1st. Today I put an Orange SIM into my iPhone, connected it to my computer and I was greeted with this:

Successfully made a call using the Pay-as-you-go Orange SIM so it looks like it has worked fine.

Submitted a total of three unlocking requests so far and all have been rejected. I contacted O2, and they escalated it to their relevant Dept. and said I would get a text in the next couple of days about it.

I have gone through multiple replacements from Apple, so does anyone think that may be the reason why? My O2 number not matching up with the IMEI number of the phone on their systems?

Regardless, they asked me if I had had a replacement from Apple before and I said yeh so hopefully it'll go through successfully now.

I requested an unlock for my daughter's phone on the day O2 announced the service, the text came through yesterday...I'd forgotten about it it was so long ago, good facility, crap service!

do O2 unlock phones that have never been used on their network

Has anyone had any joy unlocking a previously JB'd and unlocked phone which, apart from placing £15 on the account to cover the unlock fee, has never been topped up?

I bought an O2 PAYG phone and having inserted it once into iTunes with the O2 SIM then unlocked it.

I've just bought £15 of 'credit' but had to provide 2 numbers that I 'frequently' call. I dialled my home landline and hung up before my wife answered (so no cost), but then stupidly called my mobile which went to voicemail. I'm now at £14.35 so will need to spend another £10 to have the required amount of credit (O2 have a min £10 top up).

So two questions:
Will O2 reject my request as I've never given them any airtime revenue?
Will I get my PAYG credit of £9.65 back when I unlock?

Many thanks

Yes, you can still apply for the unlock if jailbroken, as did I. Although yes you do have restore in order for the official unlock to be applied. However you don't have to restore it straightaway after receiving the text if you don't need to desperately. The unlock will just be applied next time you restore your phone. :)

I was in a similar situation.

I had never used it. I topped up and had £20ish pounds of credit. Phoned two numbers a couple of times to get those, then submitted the request. Was accepted and had the left over credit to use if I want/need too.

had a quick look at this thread a week ago and so filled in online form, was unlocked in around 7 days.

i use a 3gs with a simplicity, received my text this morning. The whole thing was really easy and now im very pleased i have the option to change networks if i feel the need (o2's service has been spot on to be fair as a whole but their 3g coverage is not on par with the other big boys in the uk).

Its kinda funny how much of a royal pain in the arse it was to unlock (and then keep unlocked) my 2g and 3g and then it be so so easy to sort this one out.

Great to hear that. I'll keep putting my O2 SIM in my phone each day to see what happens :p

Coupla questions: Now that you are officially unlocked are you able to receive Push notification from apps like Fring/NotifyMe/FlightTracker etc? (it was not being able to get them that lead me to check out if )2 had changed their <12 month PAYG unlocking policy - which to my delight they have :) )

Just out if interest, in your signature you mention tethering. Is this done via a Cydia app, and if so are you now able to have an 'officially' unlocked phone and still use Cydia apps? I'd assumed that the official unlock requires you to restore with a fully fledged, unadulterated IPSW? Or will restoring to an IPSW created with the pwnage tool also work? I don't use any Cydia apps at the moment at the moment, but it would be good to know.

Many thanks

I was doing that but got annoyed so got an old phone and just left my SIM in that so it was on the network and I could check in seconds rather than having to switch SIMs every day to test

My Push Notifications always worked as I never hacktivated. However, to get the unlock from Apple I restored, got the unlock message, activated (legit) with my Vodafone SIM and I still receive push notifications. I have got loads today telling my about problems with the tube.

It looks like Vodafone will support tethering offically as they have got a tethering APN specified in their IPCC file. Plus the tethering option appeared. As I had jailbroken with Blackra1n, I installed a custom IPCC file which specified a different APN for tethering, which allowed it to start working with no intervention from Cydia. So semi-legit

Many thanks

No worries

Well... my text from O2 came today.

The unlock process appeared to go very well. With the O2 SIM in I connected the phone to iTunes, and did a restore. Got the congratulations message to tell me I had unlocked my phone. I disconnected put my Orange SIM in and reconnected. I was asked if I wanted to download carrier settings, which I did.

All appeared OK. However, I couldn't launch any apps. The default apps (maps, mail etc) are all OK, but all the ones I've downloaded from the App Store just crash when I open them - all of them.

I did another restore, this time with the Orange SIM. Again got the Congratulations message, followed by a request to download carrier settings. Same thing. All my apps open for a split second then crash. I've got about £50 worth of apps so I'm hoping that I don't have to buy them all again.

On both Restore processes I Synced the phone from a backup. I'm loathed the set it up as a new phone as I loose all my achievements on my games, but if that is what I need to do...

I've tried resetting the phone but that's not worked.

I downloaded a new app and that also crashed on opening.

Eek... help...

:(

I had a similar problem recently but only for Jailbroken apps. I restarted and everything was fine, so sorry, can't help

I've had the same problem as Chris.L.

I took a backup of my iPhone before doing the restore and then I put the restored the backup - All of my 3rd Party Apps open for a split second and close again.

I did another restore and did not restore my backup - Apps work fine.

I'd like to keep all my SMS's and Apps. But right now it's either or!!

What could be the cause?

Is there anyway to backup SMS's and reload them onto a freshly restored phone?
