How did you get it so fast?

I've been thinking about a mac for awhile but knew the core 2's would be here soon. Added macrumors RSS to my home page and waited. When I saw the news yesterday i simply called the store. They had a few in. However, when i went into the store and asked for one they said 'no we dont have any'. NOT what i was told! He went out the back and bought one out. Nice. Problem was that it was not configurable. I only had the option of 17" or 20" and as they came (per apple.com), except if I had wanted more RAM.

that's cause it's not... it's a tiny speed bump.
I was expecting something along the lines of the predicted 20-40% from my 1.8 to a 2.0. i.e. an increase from ~25 fps to ~30-35 fps. Definitely part of this is I/O bound, so it might be interesting to repeat this kind of test with a VIDEO_TS folder that's already on the HDD. i.e. MTR then Handbrake.

As twoodcc says MacPros are able to get double the frame rate...

I picked up the 20" iMac C2D with the wireless keyboard and mouse this evening from the local Apple Store ($1559 before my employer discount). It is much quieter than my rev. A 17" iMac G5 and the screen is much brighter and more evenly lit. Love it so far.

I also wanted to up the RAM (to 2GB). Online was $165 which was very reasonable. At first the local Apple Store quoted $300 but later "corrected" the price to $600. I passed.

I ordered mine yesterday. :)

20" iMac
2.33Ghz Core 2 Duo
2gb RAM
256mb ATI Radeon X1600
250gb HDD

It'll be here in a week or two. It's my first Mac, and it's replacing a 1.2Ghz Celeron with 256mb RAM. :D

That will be a H-U-G-E increase in performance Matt T, enjoy! :)

I ordered mine on Wednesday 6th - 20" 256mb Graphics, 2GB RAM - can't wait :D Estimated dates are 15th to ship and 19th for delivery, and I'm in the UK. Hoping it'll be sooner, otherwise it'll be sitting at my house and I can't get it for 2 extra weeks!

I have to admit, the iMacs are pretty slick. I wish I could justify buying one, but between my Mac Pro * Mini I can't find a reason haha! I always thought it would make such an awesome party computer!

Congrats to the new guys:)

I have a 24" in transit. Shipped yesterday, scheduled for delivery by 10:30 AM on the 12th.

I'm so glad I found out about the new lineup in time (just enough time to cancel my first order of a 20" imac). Been working on a pc for a couple months and am glad to be going back to a mac...xp sucks lol!

All those posting in this thread that you ordered one, make sure you come back and post your impressions when it arrives!

I just bought another iMac, this one a 20" for my dad, to join the other 7 Macs in our family :).

Shopping advice?

Hey All--

I'm thinking about finally upgrading my G4 PowerMac (Quicksilver). The iMac 24" sounds amazing but I'd like to see it in stores first. Anybody know if they're on display yet?

Also, any advice on where to buy one that I don't have to pay sales tax? I'd like to get a tricked out one, 2GB/500GB/7600GT, this probably won't be available from an on-line retailer will it?

Anybody know of tax holidays in VA, MD, or DC for computers? When I lived in PA they had one freshman year of college so all the arriving students could save some money. I'm not going to be buying until some time in October or November, so I'm just trying to plan ahead.

Anybody planning to wall mount the 24"? I'm an apartment dweller myself, but the idea seems so 21st century that it's tempting.

Thanks--

Im ordering a 24" at the end of the month with a 7600gt. I went to the apple store in Eatons Centre (Toronto) and the guy said they wont have any on display for another week or so. I really want to see one up close!

As soon as someone gets there first 24" post pics!

I helped my mom order an 17 inch iMac on August 27th and it had a ship date of Sept 7th, which I thought was kinda odd. I suspected there might be an upgrade in the works. When they released the new specs she was upgraded to the Core Duo 2 2ghz. Now it is scheduled to be shipped on Sept 11.

Hmm...I am getting a new iMac as well..but I didn't order it...it's a replacement from Apple for my eMac...

so, the guy at Apple said he would be able to see that I have sent the eMac by FedEx come Monday when it's in the tracking system and he would then "release" the iMac (it's the 17" C2D 2.0 Supderdrive model).

Do you think they would place an order through the online store and send it to me that way?

Are they being shipped from China, or more locally?

Sorry for the silly questions, just excited to get it!
