Hope all of you in the beta program are giving feedback to Apple that their recommended Metal GPU cards can’t do firmware updates and boot screen.

Yes that's a really good idea actually. Apple was really responsive when someone (LightBulbFun?) reported the missing microcode from firmware 0087.

I'm not in the Mojave public beta yet (waiting on the damn dual 6-pin to 8-pin cable to get here from China!) but I plan to in the next week or two. I'll be sure to report it but it would be great if a lot of us do.

Yep, sorry about that, and to others who mistakenly made a purchase.

My bad as I hadn't looked too closely at the 6-pin end and description. I had just gone out to my local Fry's to look at it and that's when I discovered the error of my ways... :(

As far as I could determine, there are no US-based sources for these and the only easily purchaseable one is off eBay from China for ~$15 USD with shipping. As I have no recourse, I had placed on order which will take 2-3 weeks to arrive...
Don’t believe the delivery estimate, that’s worst case.
Mine had the same estimate, arrived in about a week, other members have the same experience also...:)

TBH I've had the same idea, maybe someone with non public beta access will be able to test it before PB3 is released.

Hopefully! I have the developer beta, but a rx460 and that definitely doesn't get decode/encode support at all. I am tempted to buy a rx580 but really want to make sure it gets these features before going ahead. Fingers crossed.

Any news on gpu accelerated encode or 10 bit hevc decode with rx580 since beta 4?

I'll jump in here to ask - is there any chance this feature will eventually work with nVIDIA cards as well? I have a MVC-flashed 1080 Ti that I'd love to get support...

(Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.)

This would be great, but alas it doesnt seem so at the moment. Apple and Nvidia are at some kind of impasse. It appears that for now, AMD cards are the only ones that Apple will support, and to be honest, it's not totally clear how much support for decode/encode they are willing to include, even for those. Hevc decode is there for 8 bit, 10 bit decode is missing I believe, and so is encode.

At least Iina has already in 10.13.x support for partial HEVC GPU decode (partial with Maxwell Cards, not yet tested with Pascal cards).

That's very impossible. Nidia hasn't provide any HEVC hardware decoding / encoding support in macOS yet.

Playing HEVC-footage with Iina 0.0.14.1 indicates ~ 175% CPU use and ~ 25% GPU use (Maxwell GTX Titan X). I don't know when this began, but earlier versions of Iina made my CPU go nuts (all cores full used). The GPU must help some way.

Afaik the shaders of Maxwell GPU's could indeed provide partial HEVC decoding.

But maybe i'm wrong. ;)

Quite sure that's 100% CPU decoding, the GPU still has to do some work because you are playing video. For real GPU decoding should looks like this. 11% CPU and much higher GPU usage.

Also, the table your quote is from this page.

https://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-video-codec-sdk

And if you check the info at the very beginning, macOS is not included.

That 350% to 160% CPU usage improvement. May be because different videos (or playing different part of the video), or efficiency improvement of IINA.

Ok, you convinced me.:)

I guess efficiency improvement of Iina.

Thanks for the testing.

It's time for another bug report. Make sure Apple know that the HEVC hardware encoding option is already available for cMP but not working yet.

When exporting with quicktime the only option I get is HEVC which fails but I don't know if it tries to use the RX580 or not. I've tried ffmpeg which also fails when trying to export using GPU encode. I don't have final cut pro X. Can you try running Final cut pro X and give the error message?

I have't upgrade to PB3 yet, but if no hardware encoding available yet, I believe the same error will happen in FCPX, that's what I had in the last beta.
