I just tried updating the firmware with a non-flashed card using the Mojave installer. It does not work. So not sure exactly how Apple is going to tackle this issue.

Great News!!

I just installed the Mojave public beta, HEVC 4k 60fps decoding is now enabled on my RX 580. I can now playback HEVC 4K 60FPS in QuickTime with very low cpu usage !!! It's super smooth!

Awesome, so perhaps those are family 2 features. That must be one of the reasons Apple is recommending Polaris cards as opposed to older cards you can't buy new anymore and also don't support these new features.

I'm assuming your card doesn't have a boot screen? How did you get pass the firmware update?

Others have stated it includes the 085 firmware update. I checked and it does. So if you already have 085 or 087 you don't need a firmware update.

I will mention that the ATI Radeon HD 7950 says 2v1 in Sys profiler as well

but that the intel HD 4000 and GeForce GT 650M GPUs in my MBP9,1 both report 1v4,

it seems All AMD cards in general support a newer or diffrent version of metal then NVIDIA cards atm...

but its very Awesome to see Apple enabled HVEC decoding on the RX 580/5,1 combo :) I wonder if Vega cards have it enabled on the 5,1 too?

I’m pleasantly surprised: first the APFS firmware updates, 10Gb Ethernet, 10.14 support, official support for 560 and 580, now HEVC native decode acceleration - maybe someone in Cupertino loves classic Mac Pro too.

Who could tell all of this one year ago…

Attempting to installon a 2009 cMP
NVMe boot modified 0085 firmware
AMD rx480. And EFI 7950 failes (as reported)
Boot from a AHCI or NVMe PCIe SSD.

I get through the download, start the install, shortly thereafter I see:

installation of macos could not continue. installation requires downloading important content. That can't be downloaded at this time. Try again later.

Any thoughts?

Did you tried installing via startosinstall?

assuming Apple isn't going to do something as radical as bootscreen on generic GPUs, what would be their other options? I can't imagine they're going to present not having filevault as a permanent solution.

Could the bootscreen be routed via USB / bluetooth / wifi, so that a paired iPad could function as a recovery / select drive / enter filevault password device?

The point is, AMD RX560/580 don't have EFI and Apple suggested these.

Sorry, did I miss anything, when Apple suggested this card?

So, they finally allow the GPU hardware decoding on cMP, did you try the hardware encoding yet?
