Yes, this was a clean install of 10.14 on a blank SSD.

I also had a little trouble finding the exact method to install here on Mac Rumors. So, I did a little Googling and came up with this which worked perfect. Several people mentioned the "startosinstall" method but never included the actual command. =(

I did the install while booted to my main High Sierra drive. No optical disk or USB stick involved.

I first formatted my blank SSD to APFS (I like APFS) and named it Mojave. (Maybe not necessary ?)

Then just did this:

1. Download the MacOS Mojave PB1 installer from the App Store as usual, making sure it’s in the /Applications/ directory.

2. Open the Terminal application, found in /Applications/Utilities/

3. Enter the following command syntax in Terminal at the command line prompt: (copy & paste)

 sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Mojave\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/startosinstall --volume /Volumes/Mojave

If your Volume is not called Mojave, like mine, just change the name to match.

Once I found the actual command syntax it was very simple and fast. Less than 10 minutes to install for me on fast M2 blades.

It worked perfect for me. Good luck to you all.

Does the option not to convert to APFS still work with Mojave?

They may not be available for purchase, but they're the only "official" PCIe cards for Macs that support Metal, and they probably equip a lot of Mac Pros. So it's surprising that Apple has listed a pair of random PC cards that currently do not support boot screen instead of those.
Hmm. I wonder what cards the Mac Pro 2019 will be shipping with?

Well I got tired waiting for Nvidia to release a web driver for Mojave PB1. :D

So with a little googling I found a hack to allow the High Sierra driver to install in Mojave.

My 1080 TI's are now working in Mojave...
Please share what you found "with a little googling".

IF the MacPro7,1 has standard PCIe slots, there is a possibility of new generation AMD (and NVIDIA) EFI "For Mac" cards to be released. However, that does depends on how Apple is handling the standard PC cards they are currently recommending for Beta in MacPro5,1 (and whatever cards are in the eGPU list). For compatibility with MacPro5,1 it would also depend on power. Basically would need to be 6-pin, dual 6-pin, or 8-pin to be recommended. (No chance Apple would support cards requiring an external PSU in any way.)

For a truly modular system, UEFI makes sense (or a new similar protocol). The next generation of Macs could support that, in theory. Unsure if it's possible to upgrade firmware in older machines to support UEFI in some way, but that would be the easiest "fix" for compatibility. Regardless, SOMETHING will need to be done at some point for the machines without a built-in display to deal with these "issues". The Apple EFI is getting in the way for these machines and might be part of the reason for stagnation in updates.

finally got mine to work with some gpu tinkering with 5770 and rx460

Does Mojave beta automatically convert HFS+ to APFS upon install, or does it honor the existing filesystem?

Mojave installer on my 5,1 with ‘metal capable’ MVC 980 GTX reported that my GPU should have Metal support to proceed with the installation... Why...?

Well...Launching installation from terminal bypassed this... :)

Option to skip APFS does not work.

It seems the EFI part causing the issues. I can run the installer with just the unflashed 1080Ti.

Hmm... Can be. But MVC site states that all of their cards have metal support and are solid in Mojave http://www.macvidcards.com/
[doublepost=1530350274][/doublepost]However the issue is ‘formal’ as terminal command can start the installer.

I only did not find any line in System report in Mojave saying ‘Metal capable’. for 980 GTX. Is it because because there are no drivers installed, or can it be due to MVC EFI?

I bypased driver verification, but I am not able to enable last HS WD after it is installed anyway.

Wait, did you perform an OS upgrade (from the current working OS with web driver installed)?

Or directly run the installer (e.g. USB bootable installer)?

Direct installation won't work. Because the installer can't detect the 980's existence without the help of web driver.

Upgrade from 10.12.

I removed the existing WD afterwards as well, and installed the one supposed to work in 10.13.5. by bypassing version verification.

P.S. 10.12. Reported card as metal capable under system report.

Throwing my successful install into the mix for anyone considering the beta. 2010 Mac Pro with Sapphire Pulse RX 580 upgraded without a hitch. No surprise here considering it is one of the officially supported Metal cards. Didn't feel like throwing my GT120 in for boot screen, so I sat looking at a black screen for about 15 minutes. When the boot screen did pop up, the install was about 50% complete.

2010 5,1
x5690
32GB 1333 ram
Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB
Samsung 850 evo on Apricorn Solo X2

Interestingly, the macOS GPUFamily went from 1v3 to 2v1. Link speed remains at 2.5 GT/s.

Same experience here with essentially the same spec as you.
It runs very nicely for a beta.

Hey, everyone here installed via startosinstall. Try for yourself. The only ones that Apple "officialy supports" on the basic installer are AMD RX560 and RX580, but you can install on whatever Metal card with startosinstall.

Support for MacPro5,1s are not really baked yet. DP1 did not support them, DP2/PB1 more or less support correctly, but only installs with the basic app installer on RX560/580.

Your card is better than mine (HD7870 with 2GB) and I installed correctly.

This is not true. I did not install with the startosinstall method. The installer worked with a flashed GTX 680.

You are saying that MisterAndrew are wrong because he can install with GTX680 or because we with HD 7xxx/R9-280 cards have to install with startosinstall that I was referring to?

I mean this is wrong -> "The only ones that Apple "officialy supports" on the basic installer are AMD RX560 and RX580"

But then I confused you mean "Everyone with AMD GCN1.0 cards" can run the installer natively.

In fact, you mean "Everyone with AMD GCN1.0 cards" should use the startosinstall method because the installer won't work natively. So, AFAIK, this is entirely correct at this moment.

I've edited to clarify both:

Seems RX480 are supported by the installer app too, at least handheldgames installed with one.

I bet the installer will proceed normally with any Polaris or Vega card. It appears Apple is recommending the eGPU cards for the cMP.

Update: I opened the installer with the RX Vega 56 installed and there is no message about Metal or FileVault and it appears the install will proceed normally.

It is odd that there is an issue with AMD GCN 1.0 cards.

Will not install with this level of Metal support.

That's the Metal feature set for any GPU that supports Metal in High Sierra.
