Hi this is Mark. I just bought my first MacBook air. I have been using an iPhone for the past four years. I wanted any suggestions that would make my initial experience positive in any tips I can to make my computer protected past week it's any viruses. Do I need to need to bring virus protection if so what do you recommend?

Hello rumorers ! New rumorer here.

My big conversion/initiation (Win -> Mac) happened in 2009 when my new software dev job asked me what kind of computer they should get me for work. I didn't know jack about Mac, so naturally, I said, "Mac, please !". And so, the love affair began. There is nothing quite like writing code on a Mac Pro beast. I also bought a (personal) MBP 13" that same year.

Today, I'm about to rejuvenate my 2009 MBP 13" with 8GB RAM (from 4GB), a Crucial SSD (from HDD), and only yesterday did I discover on YouTube that the optical drive can also be switched out for a second storage drive !!! (Genius idea, BTW, whoever thought of it) Parts arriving soon ... STOKED !!!

I'm running Yosemite, which, given my current hardware, is SLOW. Looking forward to some real multitasking power using after my upgrades ! I'm mostly a Java developer, but am learning Swift (do have some Q's about that, which I will ask later) and Android for fun. I also like to automate tasks with AppleScript, Automator, and Shell scripting ... fun fun fun !

Nice to meet y'all. I've read some useful info here before, never thought of joining ... until now :)

Thanks MacRumors for the awesome website. It's been a gold mine of information with regards to all that is Mac - and it's been great to learn particularly about new iPhones that are coming out each year, and gives me (and others I'm sure!) a very helpful guide on whether to upgrade that particular year or not.

Looking forward to further finding out if I should keep my iPhone 6 (with the much hallowed 3.5mm port) when the iPhone 8 comes out, or if I should skip and wait for better features (like a better camera) in the iPhone 9. We shall see...

I'm a lurker who wanted to filter forums for a better lurking experience, which requires registration. So here I am.

Long time Mac owner, off and on, since I bought a 512K "Fat" Mac in 1984. I have recently returned to Apple devices after a five-year fling with Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 devices. It feels good to be back "home". :)

Hello. I joined the forums today though I've been getting news for a while. I must say I'm a bit disappointed at all the personal, political, non-apple related posts but I'm happy to just ignore them. I have a question so I'll slog through and find the appropriate place to do so. Thank you and have a pleasant day/night.

Welcome, Betty ! I'm new here too.

Just curious - which posts are you referring to ? ("personal, political, non-apple related")

Well, one doesn't have to look hard to find them in amongst the threads; I'm sure you'll see them. I guess people just need to express themselves no matter the venue. Happy journeys through the threads.

hi, i joined up today because I live in Oxford UK and is it possible that Apple is unaware that there are 2 huge universities here?
Anyone wandering into any cafe, library or just walking around will see that people here
use Apple products but it is annoying...as the nearest proper Apple Store is in Reading, or, believe it or not, Milton Keynes. We have an "Apple authorised reseller" but that is not the same thing at all, if you want to do a course or make a Genius appointment or even are considering buying an iMac, and want to see it before spending £2000. I was informed at the weekend that Oxford University has banned Apple from having a shop in Oxford and Apple agreed to this, and so put in a biggish installation in a branch of Curry's slightly out of town. I can't see the motivation for this from the University, but there is no Apple Store.
There is a new huge multimillion pound shopping centre being built, with a John Lewis etc etc, not quite a Westfield, but big enough and called Westgate.... and Apple is NOT going to be in there, or in any of the better, city centre sites that have come and gone. Can ANYONE from Apple or anywhere (or Oxford Uni), explain to me why a small town like Cambridge gets a proper Apple store and Oxford does not?
I have been a mac person/family etc forever so am loyal but mystified...we had one of those purple iMac G3 space things 20 years ago...
Thanks for any info....

Hello,
Yes, I am definitely a newbie - only joined this morning.
I have just posted my first question on the forum about the possibility of replacing my old Mac Pro 2,1 for a 3,1 and any software compatibility issues that might arise from that.
It would be great if some of you can help.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
