Hi everyone, like a lot of others over the years, I've been a longtime reader but finally bit the bullet and registered some time last month.

While it's difficult to escape mundane inanities (as always on the web), some of the postings, tutorials and advice on this forum are world class and have saved me from making some bad decisions in my 12 year Apple history.

Just looking at the first reply here from 2002 is amazing. The hosts, mods and wise advice givers really do deserve a round of applause. I only help what I can offer can be of some use to others in their journey...

This will be a bit of a test... Another of these threads started with good intentions... but was soon taken over by regulars.

if you just joined MacRumors, reply and introduce yourself.

This is only for new Macrumors users... only users who registered within two months of the current date may reply...

All other users posts will be deleted. (moderators, please enforce this). This will be for myself included... only comments by truely "new" users will be allowed in this thread.

Discuss away...

(this could fail miserably if no one replies :) )

Hello everyone,

Long time PC/Windows user here, but it is now time to get serious about replacing my my five-year old Toshiba Satellite and I'm thinking about trying MacOS.

While I'm an Android smartphone user (BlackBerry DTEK60) I just purchased a 10.5" IPad Pro and really like it.

Anyway, I look forward to learning more about MacOS and the Apple ecosystem on this forum and seeking advice frommy fellow members.

Cheers!

Hi Everyone.
I've been a long time Win user (since Win3.1 days). I've been reading MacRumors for a while now...been waiting for the right moment to switch to Mac. Seems like this was a good time to switch and purchased the new 2017 iMac 27" 5k (i7/ 512GB SSD/ 16GB). I plan to use the iMac for mostly photo (and some video) editing.

Since I am new to the MacOS, could someone recommend what are the first Apps/ programs I should install.
(i.e. anti-virus, anti-malware, general utilities...etc.).

I suppose there are many videos out there to teach you how to use and operate MacOS. But is there a centralized location where I can get step-by-step training/ learning materials.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I love it when a new user follows forum etiquette properly ;)

My go to install list for new Mac builds / rebuilds (happens at least 3-4 times per year in my studio):

  • AppCleaner (helps fully remove / uninstall apps)
  • CCleaner (removes temp files / caches, etc.)
  • Avast Security (free Mac anti-virus, ClamXav is a lighter version though, Avast has been getting bloated and more PC-like each build)
  • CrossOver (for playing those old PC games you can't let go of!)
  • DiskWave (be careful with this one, but gives you the ability to view / edit / delete almost any file within the entire MacOS system. Useful for clearing out massive apple.bird caches. Be very careful)
  • iStat Menus (system / temp monitoring)
  • SMC Fan Control (control / tweak fan speeds to lower CPU temps)
  • Keynote / Pages / Numbers (far, far superior to MS Office (unless you're a power user) and easy on the eye templates)
  • NordVPN (best VPN I've found so far)
  • Radio Silence (excellent lightweight, cheap firewall software)
  • Transmission (very light footprint torrent app)
  • Tuxera Disk Manager (allows you to format / edit / write to NTFS drives)
  • WhatsApp / Telegram / Google Drive / Dropbox, etc.

Hi Guys,
Thanks to macrumors for this space of sharing.

I get as present, last year a MacBook Pro
Here it is:based on 2Go RAM i putted 4Go

MacBook Pro (15 pouces, 2,4 2,2 GHz)
2,2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 Go 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 128 Mo

So, i've been around android and windows for quite some times,
But franckly i'm really newbie at Macos, i tried it last year soon i get it, there was some boot problem.
So gave it back to the repair shop where my EX girlfriend bought the MAC in Paris.
They keeped it more than a month and then, in november if remember it get stuck again like dead.
So i putted it aside. Then this summer, a few days ago I tried again and miracle, no idea why, back to life.
Then boot problems again. I think maybe if i upgrade from Moutain Lion to El Capitan it will be better.
Hell Noo! The crazy thing is as i read in some blogs, i should see Lion in My MacStore account. Empty, still only the apps. Now even Impossible to go to recovery or whatever. I have the boot sound, the keyboard light soon after.
But totally black screen. I spent hours to look at some youtube videos. Nothing works. Finally i get here.
so ET VOILA! if someone have any brilliant idea. Thanks :)

This is better off in the MacBook forum but from the sounds of it, lets establish you were gifted a 2nd or 3rd hand MacBook from 2008 - that is 9 years old, most likely. This particular model with the 8600M GT is notorious for GPU failures and I would think this is causing your problems. The end solution to fix this would be to replace the logic board at an authorised Apple repair centre. However, this is likely to cost you anywhere between USD$500 to $800 depending on availability of parts and labour cost.

Unfortunately, there isn't much good news for you...I would advise you to not sink any more money into this model and look to purchase either a new one or a newer model from perhaps 2014...

Hey everyone! I'm Jeromy and I just bought a MacBook Pro late 2011. I was looking for a good Apple-based community and I think I've found it! I'm looking forward to getting to know this place and contributing to the forums.

Here are some screenshots of my MacBook:

Hey all! I'm Ellen from Melbourne, Australia. Mad Apple enthusiast! I've been reading this site for a few years but I'm so excited about the new iPhone I had to sign up (nobody else around me seems to care too much :() to talk about it. Can't wait to discuss Apple products and software with others who share my passion. :)

Hi, I just got sucked into the "mp" craze. Just was hoping to make sense of a little of the fact, most people will never need anything more than an 8mp camera... If you are a pro, prints, gallery's, advertising, hell HD is 2 mp. Look it up. 4k would shock you...

Anyways sorry, that was from the last thread.
Was reading the rumors about new apple. I'm not a fan or a user but I appreciate all new technologies and think it's interesting. So hi. Thanks for having me

Hi everyone,

I've been a Mac user for a while: had my first Mac in 1984 - the 128K version - when I was just a kid, with a good old ImageWriter. It's been a Mac life ever since with a small hiatus at the end of the 90s (I was eagerly waiting for Copeland).
Mac 128K -> MacPlus -> Mac SE/30 -> Quadra 400 -> PowerMac PPC 601 -> MacBookPro 2009 -> MacBookPro Retina 2015...

I live in the Silicon Valley, not too far from "the spaceship".

Cheers

I am very attached to my matte black early 2008 MacBook 4,1 OS Snow Leopard and wondering if I dare attempt to upgrade the RAM/Storage in order to run Yosemite or possibly El Capitan, which I need in order to download an upgrade of a piece of software I use regularly. Or maybe I should just buy a used MB on ebay, instead of fixing something that isn't broken. I dunno. I also have a powermac, and two iMacs. which still work, as far as I know.
