It seems to me that the next revision of any of the Mac notebooks will have to come with LED LCD's. The notebooks seem to me to be the most likely to have LED's first and he did say "We plan to introduce our first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007." As it seems unlikely that we will get 2 updates to the notebooks this year, it seems logical that the LED's will be on the MBP I have been waiting for. We'll see I guess.

Other than a transition to Santa Rosa, I don't, however, see big changes or major new real features (like Robson FLASH cache, LED backlights, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drives, ...

But Robson Caching is part of Santa Rosa. I also expect LED backlights, especially when Steve Jobs just talked about it. I also expect a GPU upgrade. And I think (hope) there will be a Blu-Ray drive, either built in or as an option.

My guess: 2 updates this year for laptops and 1 for mini & iMac.
At wwdc they introduce mbp with leds, mb with better gpu.
Later in the fall they introduce mbp with brd (Leopard will have brd support), mb with leds, iMac with leds (and maybe brd) and mini with better gpu (hopefully it will get dual display support & brd).

But still I'm asking will SR support eSata without additional chips?

I'm new and a little confused about the importance of LCD displays...

Is it the lower power consumption that has people excited? Is the display quality much different?

I'm more concerned with the faster processor/gpu hopefully. I've never owned a notebook so perhaps I don't fully comprehend the frustration of short battery life.

The LED screens look much better then the current. Also they consume much less power, giving notebooks more battery life. But I doubt they will be in the upcoming notebook upgrades. I have a feeling when Steve said they will see the light of day in 2007 I think he meant towards the end of the year. Maybe the subnotebooks? He did say the smaller the screen the easier to make.

You should wait on your purchase just so you can see what the update brings. Then you have the choice to either buy the updated MBP, or, if you're underwhelmed by the update, to try to find the older version at a discount.

(Not that I would ever imply that Santa Rosa would be underwhelming in a post in the "Waiting for Santa Rosa" thread... that would be like telling the kids there's no Santa Clause the week before Xmas. :D )

Any new Santa Rosa PC laptop reviews? The one on CNET UK was garbage. (The review, not the laptop. Although the laptop was... what's the word? :D )

I've had a laptop for a couple years now and I get about 3 hours of decent midrange use (surfing the web, AIM, iTunes, email, etc) and I've never really gotten frustrated with how little battery there is; if you leave your computer for a while, close the lid. If you can, get a backup battery. It's never been an issue (for me, at least).

I'm waiting. I need the money to get it anyway. Hopefully the middle config macbook will have the X3000. It'll be my first mac besides the one my school lets me use.

I'm going to do this the lazy way and not look through 409 posts. The current mbp supports up to 3 gb of Ram. Is the next revision going to support 4 or more? I know 4gb of ram sound like a lot but I still want it.

Yep, Santa Rosa will support 4 gigs of RAM at least. Maybe 8 gigs.

What would you do with 8 gigs of RAM? I'd probably make a 4D model of Milla Jovovich.

Can you go ahead and whip me up one of those while your at it. Thanks.

Well Santa Rosa is out this week...

The crop of Dells, Compal's, Fujitsus, Asus and HP laptops all have DX10 Graphics cards on all models. (Intel X3100, Mobility Radeon HD 2600, GeForce Go 8400 and GeForce Go 8600)

Here is a page with links and specs of the so far annouced Santa Rosa laptops:

Presumably Apple will go with the Radeon Mobility HD 2600 in the MacBook Pro and the Intel X3100 in the MacBook.

Intel Turbo Memory I would imagine will only be in the MacBook Pro.

Nice find. It seems there really is hope for a Mobility HD2600 in the Santa Rosa Macbook Pro!

I can't help noticing a mobile 8600 with 1GB RAM...
...in a notebook the size of a shoe!!!

Under 3kg. If ASUS can do it, Apple can surely do it under 2.5 with a 65nm HD2600...

Aah. 1GB w. Turbocache. I don't know what Turbocache is, but it sounds like cheating to me.

Yay! I have hope again! Now all we need is Apple ta git dem hans orn da 2.6GHz Meroms and summadat 800MHz Giggstiks... An of course dem 1GB GDDR4 Mobility HD2600XT's. Let's hope they exist, and that the next Santa Rosa notebooks are to be found on English speaker friendly websites! (Optimally Apple Australia ; )

Oh, and as before, just slightly differnent... If "Compal" can put an 8600 in a 2.5kg 14.1" notebook, Apple can do better.

Hopefully the ATi Mobility HD2600XT makes it into the next revision of the MBP. Considering that the current ATi Mobility X1600 consumes approximately 90W under full load (http://www.hothardware.com/articles/ATI_Mobility_Radeon_X1600_Preview1/?page=6) and the HD2600XT is rumored to consume a similar amount, I believe it's a viable option for Apple to toss in.

HD2600XT benchmark: http://www.hardspell.com/english/doc/showcont.asp?news_id=414

I'm holding off on my purchase until the MBP is updated as I will have to use it through my college years. Might as well buy fresh.

Can anyone show me the difference between the MacBook Pro Rev. A case design versus that of the newer revisions? I've managed to find one picture on Flickr.com that shows the new heat vents - would really appreciate a picture of the old design.

Sorry man, not gonna happen.

The X3100 will probably be almost as good though. Way, way better than what the macbook has now.

Yeah that's why I'm waiting, but still even a really expensive BTO "real" GPU would be nice...

what are the chances that they will release a 13 inch MBP at WWDC? i feel like the 15 is way too big, but really dont want to have to go with the MB

Im in no need to update at the momeny, but none-the-less i cant wait!
