After carrying a Xs Max and a XR for a year now I caught a deal too good to pass up. A 64gb IPhone 8 for $200 in mint condition. Purchased as a good backup to my kids often misplaced or lost phones but I never dreamed I would fall in love with this thing. Been in my pocket for a week now and it’s not leaving. One hand operation and a fingerprint sensor have been so nice to have again and I don’t even notice it in my pocket. Here’s to an iPhone that was quickly forgotten by some including me but has captured my heart again.

Nice. I think the icons and general usability on the 8 makes sense with the icons laid out comfortably (not at the bottom of the device), etc.
Before iOS 12 and the massive headers in native apps it was even better. (Conspiracy theory: it was to encourage 6/7/8 users to upgrade)

Is not the same, is bigger, heavier and thicker. They are just a few milimeters and grams, but they count. Appart from that in the X you have to stretch your finger to reach the top of the phone, on the 8 you don´t.
I´ll stick to the 8 until Apple release an equal or lower device in size and weight.
I'll consider the Google Pixel, the 3 has the same weight of the 8, let´s see the 4 this October.
The 8 is one of the most underrated iPhone. I’m tempted to upgrade to it from my 6S just to wait on the FaceID tech to be improved. The problem is the non-plus version only has 2GB of RAM, the same amount of RAM as my 6S. With the XR have 3GB RAM, it seems clear that Apple is going to require 3GB to be the minimum later. We already see RAM being used as a criteria to discontinue support (A8 devices with 1GB of RAM like the iPhone 6 are dropped from iOS 13, while those with more RAM like the iPad mini 4 are still supported).
Not sure buying near-obsolete hardware from yesteryear is a good move. The RAM limitations alone makes buying old tech like this a bad move.
They’ll be good for at least another 3 years yet I would say. They are also priced quite well right now which is why it’s still a top seller.

Its as fast as 2018 phones. I use them (8, XS and XR)
A big plus (incidentally may be) is that it holds on mobile or wifi much better than the current phones.
Specifically on the RAM to be honest i dont find any penalties with the lesser RAM in the XR compared to the XS. I dont test to see if the apps are reloading for sake of doing it.
At $200 no one should ever complain about an iPhone 8 being an ill advised purchase. Running my Xs Max right next to this 8 proved that speed wise. Ram will be an issue in 2-3 years but not now. We are talking $200 vs $1100. I was a benchmark chaser for 5 years and it’s complete folly and a non issue in day to day use and if your using your iPhone as your 4K movie editing device your already misguided. My biggest issue, call it ocd if you want, is the notch. Just could never honestly adjust well.
"Near-obsolete"? "Yesteryear"? Are you kidding? It didn't come out in the 1950s, you know. The 8 is LESS than 2 years old and Apple not only still sells it, they also sell the 7!!!
It has the SAME 3Gb of RAM as in the current XR and last year's X. That's a gigabyte MORE than the current iPad!
Hell...under 2 years old is ultra modern by Apple standards. They still sell a 6-year-old Mac Pro (yes, you can still officially buy it) and until last year had a Mac Mini that was 4 years old.
The 8 series is a great phone and it sounds like you got a great deal. Congrats!

Really? I’d expect this response from a newbie, you’ve been around for awhile.

You can definitely feel the 2GB of RAM with the 8, I get safari page reloads and app reloads more than I did when I used the XR. But aside from the 2GB RAM the 8 is definitely a fast, sleek, underrated phone and $200 is an amazing deal.
I still hate this X, FaceID is so poor compared to the speed and convenience of TouchID.

Facial recognition is the most insane invasion of privacy ever perpetrated and those that cannot see that are unenlightened and without brain mass.
Most people do not care that Facebook and Messenger are looking at EVERYTHING on your phone. We accept it.

Privacy is dead. Apple has proven this with the Siri contractor scandal and confirmed that they are part of the death of our privacy.

I’m waiting for the 5.4 inch iPhone to debut in 2020. We all know it’s coming, and I don’t mind larger phones, but I can’t stand how much room they take up in my pocket. For that fact alone, I will resort to using my iPad/laptop for anything larger that I need for a display, and keep my tasks rather simplified with a smaller phone back in my pocket. That’s what I will be upgrading to next.
FaceID is entirely done on the phone and stored in the Secure Enclave exactly like Touch ID. If you don’t trust Apple over that you may as well accept that they’ve been stealing our fingerprints for years also, how is that better?
I don’t disagree with you. With what happened with this my trust in Apple is no longer there. I don’t use Siri nor have it enabled, but what else is Apple collecting? They’ll just get caught again and then publicly apologize and everything will be OK again. Privacy is long gone, we all gave that away by expecting things for free.

It's so incredibly underrated and fast. Maneuverability is hands down better and much faster than anything on the XS line of iPhones with bigger screens. Seriously. Prove it to yourself like I did:
1. Go to an Apple Store
2. Grab an XS and play with it for 5-10 minutes non-stop (swiping through menus, etc.)
3. Then, go grab an iPhone 8 (non-plus) and do the same
You'll be blown away at how much faster the 8 feels compared to the XS and how seamless operating it feels.

I deny it. Face ID on my XR is way faster than Touch ID on my wife’s 8, or my iPad Pro 10.5, or on my old 6S or SE (which admittedly had the first gen sensor) - I’m not talking about the actual reading of the print/face itself necessarily but the whole process.
With Touch ID there’s always that moment needed to locate and touch the home button; sure you can get very slick at that and be touching it before you’re looking at the phone, but as soon as you’re looking at it Face ID unlocks anyway, you’re just saved the fumble first. I get far, far less misreads or failures with Face ID too.
Where Face ID really comes into its own is in-app authentication. With banking apps, PayPal, code generators, secure office apps (like my work office 365 suite), even just logging into websites using safari keychain - these all require authentication which with your 8 or any Touch ID device means stopping everything and reaching for that home button again. Face ID on the other hand just happens right in front of you, no effort required.
As for your other comments re speed of use, you’re just talking about your own muscle memory and how it’s tripping you up on X phones. I went from the SE as my daily phone to the XR and am totally comfortable with it, and fast.

This topic has been beat to death. In the time it takes you to pick up your XR, point it at your face, and then manually swipe to unlock, I would have unlocked my iPhone 8 at least twice. Maybe three times.
The gen 2 Touch ID on the iPhone 8 is lightning fast. You are clearly in denial because "newer must be faster".
