Since the iPhone X Models are effectively Android phones (the dumb gesture interface is identical to Android’s), it stands to reason that iPhone X users would also behave identically to their Android counterparts.

For the most part it’s ego protection - when an individual has to rationalize and justify a bad decision (or purchase) to themselves, by continually and actively putting down those that remind them of their own mistakes.

Basically, behaving like Android users.

Makes sense. I suppose it's their way of compensation for their insecurity.

Yep.

It’s why Android users always feel the need to jump onto iPhone forums, yet you hardly ever see any iPhone users trolling Android forums.

Same thing. Insecurities.

After carrying a Xs Max and a XR for a year now I caught a deal too good to pass up. A 64gb IPhone 8 for $200 in mint condition. Purchased as a good backup to my kids often misplaced or lost phones but I never dreamed I would fall in love with this thing. Been in my pocket for a week now and it’s not leaving. One hand operation and a fingerprint sensor have been so nice to have again and I don’t even notice it in my pocket. Here’s to an iPhone that was quickly forgotten by some including me but has captured my heart again.

I originally made the mistake of upgrading from my 7 to an XR.

Returned it after two weeks, pretty disgusted with the experience.

Turned it in and got an iPhone 8 instead.

TouchID and a Home Button.

I’ll hold onto this one until Apple brings back both of those sometimes in late 2020.

Not sure buying near-obsolete hardware from yesteryear is a good move. The RAM limitations alone makes buying old tech like this a bad move.

Wow. That’s some mighty Kool-Aid you’re swilling there. The 8 won’t be ‘obsolete for at least another 3-t5 years.

You don’t need to work so hard, and put other people’s choices down, to justify your own mistakes.

Apple has proven that their data collection and usage is a lie.

Facial recognition is the most insane invasion of privacy ever perpetrated and those that cannot see that are unenlightened and without brain mass.
tinfoil hat, anyone?

Tinfoil and ignorance - a terrible combination.

indeed.

This topic has been beat to death. In the time it takes you to pick up your XR, point it at your face, and then manually swipe to unlock, I would have unlocked my iPhone 8 at least twice. Maybe three times. The gen 2 Touch ID on the iPhone 8 is lightning fast. You are clearly in denial because "newer must be faster".

That dead horse keeps being beaten, mostly by those desperate to justify their decisions and purchases.

This. The amount of times I see touchid fail because my fingers are wet is infuriating. It all gets solved with faceId.

Yes, I hate how TouchID doesn’t work after I slice my fingers off with a hacksaw - it’s all solved with FaceID.

(rolls eyes)

For me, my favourite thing about Face ID over Touch ID is passwords on websites, Internet banking etc. Seamless - and even now after having had my Max for almost a year, I still think it’s dead cool every time I do it.

No one is saying that FaceID is necessarily bad - it should be complementary to TouchID, not replace it, as both had use-cases that do not necessarily overlap.

The original intent was to have touchID underglass combined with the face recognition tech - but the touchID sensor wasn’t ready at the time. Jobs would have simply decided “then we will wait until it is ready”, but that didn’t happen. Instead a slew of compromises resulted in:
- removing TouchID
- removing the Home Button
- re-assigning the Sleep Button for purchases (dumb!)
- focusing on FaceID using technology that wasn’t ready (too expensive and too large)
etc...

In the meantime, Apple has perfected sonic touchID, paving the way for the return of TouchID, and Sony’s ToF sensors are ready (those are 3D / depth sensors with a range of 15 feet - also, they are just one single camera hole, and don’t require the array of sensors current FaceID is laden with) - all of which makes for a less expensive, and better performing device. (Note - underglass sonic fingerprint recognition would not have fit along with 3D Touch, which is why we are losing 3D Touch, but it’s being effectively replaced by a work-alike technology).

Hopefully, that will also bring us the return of the Home Button in the form of a dynamic and virtual Home Button.

Some of us prefer to know when our passwords are handed out - while I can see the convenience of the seamless experience you describe (and yes, it’s magical), there are also issues of security and privacy to consider (which I realize, 90% of people don’t care about).

OP -- Would you mind to share where you found the deal? Are we talking a site like Swappa or eBay? My current phone is showing it's age but I'm not in the position to shell out $800+ for a new one. I've been eyeing the Pixel 3a, but I'd certainly consider an iPhone 8 at a price like you found.

It feels like a mix of both to be honest. There’s people passionate for both methods and I think they all need to take a step back and realise it’s rather sad trying to convince everybody one is better than the other. If you are using one of the other you’re not really going to care.
Well we’re in an iPhone 8 thread where Touch ID has been put forward early on as a major strength of the phone versus newer models, I think it’s only fair and reasonable to challenge that. This is a forum after all.
I want to add for the sake of argument to the recent discussion, that I am one of the people who unlocks my iPhone as I draw it out of my pocket. I put my iPhone in upside down and the button is easy to press as I take it out of my pocket which means the phone is unlocked by the time I look at it. This is down to years of owning an iPhone with TouchID I can unlock it faster than I would ever really need to. That’s if fractions of a second count, which they don’t, I just wanted to explain as some of you can’t believe people unlock phones from their pockets.
I did the exact same thing with my SE for two years, and my 6S before that, and yes it’s a quick and easy way to unlock in that situation. I also turned on an accessibility setting (I forget which one now) which meant I didn’t even have to press the home button, just touch it. Brilliant.

A month or so in, long enough for the novelty to die down, I still feel like Face ID on the XR is quicker and definitely easier overall. The action of pulling out and swiping is so fluid and such a natural movement, and looking at the phone is not the extra step some here are trying to make out, it’s just a part of using any phone. Add in the extra convenience with notifications, and authenticating in apps, and it’s just a better experience all round IMHO. Gets faster and better in IOS 13 too.

This is just silly, it’s always perfectly clear when Face ID is in use, and passwords aren’t “handed out” unless you’ve already chosen to trust the app or you choose to submit them to whichever website. Trying to make an argument that Face ID is just *too easy* - give over.

And all of your data on your iPhone stays on your iPhone and doesn’t go to contractors in Ireland.

Right?

Can’t dispute facts.

But go ahead, Tim.

Yup all data on the iPhone stays on the iPhone.

Don’t know why you would think that the data from an iPhone is going to Ireland.

I can't go back to a smaller screen at this point. Sometimes I help my uncle with his iPhone 8 and it looks so much smaller to my eyes.

Nice try.

People spend way more time unlocking their phones than they do authenticating things once inside.

So with that in mind, you're saving a lot more time using Touch ID than you do using Face ID. And no, Touch ID is not just "fractionally" faster. It's at least twice as fast in most side-by-side tests. Pair that with the fact that you can unlock with Touch ID from anywhere (without having to point the phone directly at your face), and you quickly realize that, in practice, Touch ID is actually multiple times faster than Face ID.

FACTS.

No, you cannot possibly unlock your iPhone as you are taking it out of your pocket lol. According to some people in this thread, why would you do something so silly? LMAO

Because heaven forbid that an older iteration of the iPhone does something better and faster than the newer one.

The most ironic part about this thread is its title: "Oh iPhone 8 how I’ve missed you".

The X is the better phone, that's a fact. I have an 8+ and my wife has an x. I returned my Max due to pwm.

So why respond by crapping all over the iPhone X / XS? You’re just doing exactly the same thing as the people you’re complaining about. Worse, you’re making sweeping generalisations about iPhone X /XS users as if it’s an irrefutable fact that they’re terrible devices and anybody expressing positive opinions about them is making excuses.

Don’t complain about tribalism when you’re actively encouraging it.

I have owned both an iPhone 8 and an XS. Both are excellent devices, but I prefer the XS for many reasons - FaceID happens to be one of those reasons. If I didn’t like it, I’d sell it and buy something different, not make apologies and excuses.

The 8 series is the most refined version of the iPhone 6 design. It’s very good for someone that wants a small phone but still has a decent 4.7 inch screen.

Browsing the Facebook marketplace. Met up and it was just as promised with a clean esn. Haven’t seen anything like it since. Rest are in the $300 range.
