The 8 series is the most refined version of the iPhone 6 design. It’s very good for someone that wants a small phone but still has a decent 4.7 inch screen.

Fun fact: (Well, anecdotally at least)-

The iPhone 8 was probably the one phone that traditionally had very little hardware issues, if you look back to the iPhone 7/6S/6, there was reported issues that were highly sporadic throughout those models, the iPhone 8 has very little issues with hardware due to refinements.

It’s like buying the first model year of a new vehicle, you _just_ don’t_ buy_it. Manufacturers will tend to make corrections/adjustments to issues that were reported to make that model better throughout the years as they progress, similar to what iPhone is now today with the 8. It’s a well-rounded-mature device.

...
Touch ID on the iPhone 8 feels lightyears faster than Face ID too. Whoever denies this is simply in denial.
Not really. When I’m working all I have to do is look at my phone to see incoming notifications. That’s a far better use case then the home button. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

After carrying a Xs Max and a XR for a year now I caught a deal too good to pass up. A 64gb IPhone 8 for $200 in mint condition. Purchased as a good backup to my kids often misplaced or lost phones but I never dreamed I would fall in love with this thing. Been in my pocket for a week now and it’s not leaving. One hand operation and a fingerprint sensor have been so nice to have again and I don’t even notice it in my pocket. Here’s to an iPhone that was quickly forgotten by some including me but has captured my heart again.

I went back to an iPhone 8 Plus from a Xs Max (reason: dropped the Max and couldn’t stand the scratches). The display quality is awful in comparison. After almost a year using OLED the 8 Plus display feels like a cheap toy! Not to mention the lower camera quality, images are grainier and there’s no control over the bokeh effect. Moreover, having to press the home button to unlock the home screen, access certain apps, make purchases with Apple Pay, etc. is so annoying... Can’t honestly believe someone would prefer this to the Xs/Xs Max.

Seems a bit soon to say that - despite the comforting cosmetic similarity the 8 has largely the same innards as the X and the enclosure is completely different to the 6/S/7 thanks to the glass back. Whether or not it’s any more or less reliable than any other model, it’s not really a refinement of any previous model or hardware but a melding of two different designs.

It’s so minimal though isn’t it to be fair.
Only in the same sense that all these differences are minimal in the wider scheme of things. Notifications are far better with Face ID, as not only do they stay private until you look at them, but you then access them with just one tap on the screen rather than having to tap and then Touch ID. It might be a minimal improvement but it all adds up through the day and makes for a much more fluid experience.

I use an 8+ and I don’t know how I make it through the day with all the strenuous actions it takes to use this device. Typing this now on an 8+ and you’re right the screen is absolutely abysmal I can barely see it.

To answer your last question though on a more serious note, I can tell you why I chose it over the X, XS and XS Max. I paid £640 for it brand new which neither of the others can compete against on price. It’s a fast reliable iPhone with a good screen and the battery lasts 2 days. It’s got a lot going for it.

I view all my notifications on an Apple Watch which is even better than both types of phones for privacy and quick viewing. I don’t even have to pick my phone up, not that it’s at all taxing using the phone if I want to. Both methods are good but would it just be easier if I said FaceID is the bestest best of the best just to give you guys some sense of victory here? You need this more than me I think.

I think some are taking this more personally than others..

It amounts to minimal handling as needed over an 8 hour day.
We are picking our phones up regardless. Debating over which is easier, holding your finger in one place or swiping up is about as silly as it gets. If you really want to go down the minimal handling route then the Apple Watch is the best method of all.

Both have their plus and minuses, if we’re going down this route of which works better in the aggregate there are tons of threads on this already. I wish there were both, maybe in the future.

Great price - where did you find one for $200? Best deal I saw recently for refurbished was $300ish from simplemobile.

I could’ve bought any iPhone I wanted. I could’ve even waited for the iPhone 11 to drop. I still can, I have a 14 day return policy that starts on phones that I am not receiving until September 3rd.

I ordered a 8 Plus 256GB in space gray for me, and a standard iPhone 8 64GB in gold for my wife.

I think the iPhone 8 does offer everything anyone could ask for in a phone.

I have experience with FaceID, I own a unlocked iPad Pro 1TB in silver. I think FaceID is cool. And I really like my iPad Pro 11”. Although, I really just can’t get over how damn cool the home button is on the iPhone 7/8/8 Plus devices lol!

So, after owning a new iPhone 7 for a week and loving it this much, I just had to get a 8 Plus.

Newer is not always better. And the newer iPhones are not really speaking to me, I’m just not interested at all.

My head hurts from reading this thread.

FaceID is my preferred method, but can see why people still like TouchID.

Some people prefer TouchID over FaceID. Time goes on.

Why are there several people seemingly ready to go to war over an authentication method? Boggles my mind.

Apple has proven that their data collection and usage is a lie.

Facial recognition is the most insane invasion of privacy ever perpetrated and those that cannot see that are unenlightened and without brain mass.

Most people do not care that Facebook and Messenger are looking at EVERYTHING on your phone. We accept it.

Facial recognition is the worst thing for privacy and most people just don’t care and that’s fine.

We live in the wild Wild West now.

Privacy is dead. Apple has proven this with the Siri contractor scandal and confirmed that they are part of the death of our privacy.

Some people accept it. I don’t.
LOL this is the cutest post I've ever seen

Apple has proven that their data collection and usage is a lie.
Apple didn't lie - they just didn't disclose the details. And them "lying" about one subject doesn't invalidate everything they say, ever. That's just ridiculous and would never hold up in a court of law.

Facial recognition is the most insane invasion of privacy ever perpetrated and those that cannot see that are unenlightened and without brain mass.
FaceID data does not leave the hardware. There is no connection between the secure enclave and the CPU beyond simple boolean returns. Kind of ironic that you don't know basic information like that yet in the same breath call people unenlightened and without brain mass.

Most people do not care that Facebook and Messenger are looking at EVERYTHING on your phone. We accept it.
Facebook gains money by farming data about its users, Apple does not.

Facial recognition is the worst thing for privacy and most people just don’t care and that’s fine.
You're doing this thing again where you're listing off random "factoids" without a source or any kind of critical thought put into the sentence. Gonna need a massive citation needed on that one dawg

We live in the wild Wild West now.

Privacy is dead. Apple has proven this with the Siri contractor scandal and confirmed that they are part of the death of our privacy.
> some extra undisclosed detail about Siri data collection surfaces
> reddit and macrumors goes wild
> apple apologizes to the 8 nerds that are pretending to care
> "scandal"

Once again - taking one "lie" and trying to claim that any further statement/work will all be lies is ridiculous and wouldn't hold up in a court of law.

Some people accept it. I don’t.
You sound like an amazing person to know in real life. Not that we'd get the chance to meet, since you'd be locked into your house because you're allergic to electricity and cellphone waves.

I'm an Xs owner, but I had an 8 prior (in silver, of course), and it was probably my favorite phone of all time. I got Verizon to unlock it (no, it was not unlocked per the FCC rules blah blah, VZW was indeed locking their devices regardless of what you read on the internet, even before they changed the policy to today's 60 day lock policy) and sold it to my friend for $400 back in March.

Honestly, the only reason I sold it and got an Xs is because I knew I wanted the 2020 phone and I didn't want to keep the 8 for three years, so I did a midcycle upgrade to the Xs in March. Would've been happy keeping the 8.
