I've been waiting for this for about two years now, but the recent reports about iOS 18 having specific AI features limited only to iPhone 16 due to specific hardware makes me massively reconsider.
Why buy a brand new top-of-the-range iPad when we know it is not going to support what could be some exceptionally significant and game-changing features?
I genuinely would love answers to this, perhaps I'm overestimating what the iPhone 16 hardware might do for AI, but it seems really quite a risk to get this iPad before we know for sure.

What gaming changing AI features would you expect? Look at Siri and comparison of AI features between Google and Apple. Chances are, you won't be missing out on much.

What a waste of R&D money.
NOBODY asked for thinner iPads, but 99% would like a longer batterylife.

I don't give a **** if it's 7, 8 or 5mm.
If you call it PRO, it should atleast serve professionals. Making a device thinner is no pro feature, it's crippling batterylife even if it has the same as prev. gen.

That doesn't help to sell new Accessories
Well these iPads are also rumored to have more MacBook like Magic keyboards so they need better weight distribution and thinness. Not to mention all iPad accessories have worked with all respective iPads since 2018, but who needs logic and facts when you can just grift.

The larger iPad Pro already has durability concerns... unless they are reinforcing the design by making changes internally, or changes to the materials composition, I don't think this is going to do too well if not handled very carefully.
The 14” Samsung Tab S9 Ultra is 5.5 mm thin and quite sturdy. So it should be feasible.

There have been rumors that there will be a hardware change in the A-series chip for the next iPhone, dramatically increasing the Neural Engine core count. That will eventually percolate over to the M-series chips—too late for the hypothetical Early 2024 iPad release.

Thats the thing, should be... but from my experience and holding the larger iPad Pro... its just like my MacBook Air M2... it feels far too fragile.

I don't know if it's the sharper lines... but similarly thin iPads from years back (which were more curved and rounded edges) felt way more durable.

I really hope they engineer the design and metal composition for better robustness.

One good thing about the iPad Magic Keyboard is that it really does protect the iPad from being in a bag and being bent etc. Without it, even my iPad Air 4 feels too fragile to put in a backpack by itself.

I'm glad they took the feedback about the current iPads bending too easily. This looks like a much more robust design. Hopefully the entire frame is made of glass too:rolleyes:

ps - I'm all for thinness, when it works.

Not very exciting for me. MiniLED is amazing for graphical programs and the complete lack of bezels is concerning. Weight reduction could make up for this I guess but overall I will probably get M2 on a sale or refurbished.

I know a few people who have had bent iPads from being in bags... you really do need to be careful. I think the most recent iPads bend more easily than prior generations. I don't think it all has to do with thinness, but the shape and internal design.

Really looking forward to it. I’ve always disliked this narrative of making the iPad a boring Mac-like device. I like that the iPad evolves in its own iPad way, which is what has made it a great success. And thinness and lightness is a big factor of that.

Apple is held back by software. The hardware is a couple years ahead but the software is a couple years behind. Google's Tensor 3 is a smaller, slower chip, but can do plenty of things like audio and photo magic erase.

There's so much untapped power already, waiting for M4 iPad Pro doesn't make sense. Apple's software team is still trying to catch up to fully use M1.

Just home from a week trip to Mexico via American Airlines in the cheap seats. I admidt my mid section is rotund but there was a couple of inches to the edge of the fold down seat table. My 11" M2 iPad Pro just fitted with the Apple Magic keyboard so the screen could be in eye angle for me to watch a movie. If they can figure a way, these seat rows will get even closer together. A bigger screen is not an option for me in airline travel mode. No way my 14" MBPro could have been open with a usable viewing angle.....

I plan to sit out this years "new" design as my M2 works just fine for me and I want to see if this thinness being hyped turns out to remove the stiffness required to not break the screens when trying to close the keyboard.

Looks to be about as thin as it possibly could be and still have things like buttons, or USB.
Looks like speaker holes on the long side now, and a UBS - C port in the middle of the long side. Maybe the Apple Pencil interface is now on the short side ? Surprised no comments on that apparent change.

Apple is working on a new version of the iPad Pro that is set to launch as soon as March, and the refresh will mark the biggest design update to the Pro lineup since 2018.

Apple is transitioning to OLED displays, and the swap will allow for a major change to the overall thickness of the device. CAD drawings of the upcoming ~11-inch and ~13-inch iPad Pro models give us some insight into just how thin the tablets will be.

CAD drawings of unreleased Apple devices often leak out of Apple's factories in China and other countries because the information is so valuable to case makers. Case makers use these measurements to design cases for new products in order to be the first to market with a protective case for a new device size.

13-inch 2024 iPad Pro

Previously leaked dimensions confirmed that the upcoming OLED iPad Pro models will be significantly thinner than the current versions. The larger iPad Pro, for example, will be over 1mm thinner.
  • Current 11-inch iPad Pro - 247.6mm x 178.5mm x 5.9 mm
  • Upcoming ~11-inch iPad Pro - 249.7mm x 177.5mm x 5.1mm
  • Current 12.9-inch iPad Pro - 280.6mm x 214.9mm x 6.4mm
  • Upcoming ~13-inch iPad Pro - 281.5mm x 215.5mm x 5.0mm
OLED displays will bring improved HDR, better colors, deeper blacks, and other quality improvements. Apple has so far limited OLED technology to the Apple Watch and iPhone, so this will be the first time that OLED displays have been available in an Apple device of this size.

Apple's iPad Pro models are also expected to be upgraded with faster 3-nanometer M3 chips, and MagSafe charging is a possibility. Apple is also expected to sell the devices with a new Magic Keyboard and an upgraded Apple Pencil, with full details available in our OLED iPad Pro guide.
