i cant even think right now. just called the cops. i cant believe this happened.
i am at work, i work at my parents hotel, i am the only one on duty. its kind of busy today since its friday. an elderly couple called me from there room becuase they couldnt figure out the air conditioning unit. so i went to there room to help them out. i guess i forgot to lock the door to the office. i was gone 3 minutes. i get back, my 17" mbp is gone and so is my blackberry 8700g!!! the charger is still there, and they didnt take my ipod for some reason.
this cant be happening. cops should be here any minute, is there anything that i can do about this? there is no way i can afford another 17" mbp at this time. THIS SUCKS!!!
i hate people right now, i really do.

i think i'm going to throw up now.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. :(

There's not much you can do beyond notifying the cops. If you have the serial number, you might be able to notify Apple and have them flag it in case someone ever brings/sends it in to an Apple store for service. If you/your parents have homeowners insurance, you may be able to get something back for it, but it may hike the premiums too much to make it worth claiming.

i figured that there isnt much i can do. the cops are just looking around the hotel right now, i guess to see if they can see anything suspicious. there are some kids skateboarding outside, but they come here all the time, i know they didnt do it, but one of the cops is questioning them, to see if they saw anything.
i know its someone staying in the hotel. i doubt that someone came in, went to the office, stole the laptop and phone, and left in the 3 minutes i was gone. some ******* staying here saw my laptop, and when i left, grabbed it. i know its still in the hotel, but i cant prove it.
this is horrible, just horrible.

Your police force sends cops out within minutes for theft?

its a small town, they were out patroling around here. i know them, they come by here once every night to check on the hotel parking lot.

A longshot but...if it is still in the hotel and you guys have internet access or wireless and you have access to another computer, see if you can find any shares accessable or itunes sharing etc. Also check the router and look at the local network to see who is connected still.

i am on a dell right now, i have itunes on it, but how can i see the shares on the mbp? (does sharing have to be turned on from the mbp to see it? because i dont think i had sharing on)
65% of our rooms are currently rented, 14 computers are connected wirelessly to the internet, i would have no idea where to start, but would appreciate any help since i have to work until 11pm tonight, and well, this is all i am going to be thinking about until then.

BTW, i already tried calling my phone, goes straight to voicemail.

I just received a letter from the manager of my apartment stating that with crime the way it is to not only keep the door locked but use the deadbolt even when home. Some people are a total waste.

Sorry for your lose.

If it's still in the hotel you still have a chance of finding it!!!
Best of luck to you!

I hate people that steal expensive things....I would not care if they stole your car but they stole your 17" Macbook Pro, this is serious!

LOL , excuse me, but a car is much more expensive than a MBP.

cops left, took a report of the incident. one of them suggested that i should make some signs and put them up at the front desk or something (missing laptop, please return to front desk). i doubt it will do anything, but you never know.
i'm not hopeful, but maybe the person will have a change of heart and return what they took (maybe by leaving it in the room?), one can hope.
looks like i will have to figure out what my next laptop will be.

When someone else comes on duty, turn off the internet access to the hotel. When people start complaining, ask them to bring their computer to the desk and you will fix it. Have the person on duty act like nothing is going on. If a person is stupid enough to steal a computer they might be stupid enough to bring it to the desk to be "fixed" especially if they don't know macs.

Long shot but...

not a bad idea, i will give it a try, but its going to be at 11pm. if the person was smart, MY laptop would be turned off and wedged in there luggage. hoefully this person is an idiot and will fall for it. i'll try whatever i can at this point.

If they were smart they would get a job and buy their own computer.

I really don't understand these threads. Call your insurance company asap get your new replacement notebook and move on.
Give slick a break. He has just gone through a truamatic experience.

If you don't like the thread don't read it.

Wasn't there another thread about a stolen MacBook Pro. Those things must be worth it. Heck, I just got a new 17" PB that I'm trading my Mini off, and I'm already seeing why these and MBP'S are being stolen.

cops said i cant check the rooms that are occupied. i can, and will, knock on all occupied rooms and ask if anyone saw anything, i just have to wait until my dad gets here to watch the desk. cops told me that if i see my laptop/phone in the room, i can call them back and they can check the room (probable cause or whatever it is).
the person could be gone already, maybe its not even someone in the hotel, there is just no way to know.

thanks for the help btw, i appreciate the suggestions.

Well, the lesson of this is...

buy a laptop lock. I did. I work in a place where I trust the few people I work with, but I don't know who the hell is going to come in, so I wrap the cable around the metal posts on the desk.
