Thank you for your analysis, but no - the 11 inch version has its reasons for being, especially when you already have another device with a bigger screen like your MacBook or TVs.

The 13 is great and of course meant to be more immersive as the 11 inch, but no, it's not as portable for me as the 11 inch is. Event with the thinner and lighter form factor.

Thinner & lighter form factor
True for both 11” and 13”, though I guess the 13” is feeling lighter than previous 12.9”.
More immersive screen & speakers
Umm, some suggests otherwise in terms of the speaker. OLED is more immersive but I have yet to get the chance to see it.
Full-size keyboard
All usual keys are in full size so normal typing 11” and 13” doesn’t feel much difference. Some symbol keys on 11” size are squished, but I think those doesn’t affect most people. YMMV.
More portable than you think
Ehh… it’s hard to argue 13” is more portable than 11”, nor itself is “more portable” simply by its size. Main reason, aside from the budget, that I pick 11” over 12.9” back in the day was I could use it with two hands holding in landscape mode while still can type with both thumbs quick enough. I cant Do it on 13”. Besides, holding the iPad up in the air requires long endurance to both of your arms, and 13” gonna make my arms sore quicker.
Better Pro Max companion
11” and 13” Both are great serving as Pro Max companion. I do have a Mac but I use iPad more while outside and just remote back to my Mac if I need something done there.
Sticker shock is temporary
Well, those accessories do greatly enhance iPad utility. I never once regret buying the expensive Magic Keyboard folio. People often mistake my iPad with keyboard as a laptop, which says it all.
13” FOMO will haunt your dreams
Lmao I don’t think this is applicable to me.

Coming form the 12.9 M2 iPad, there was no doubt on me getting the 13". I have a 11" iPad Pro and both mini's so the 13" was a natural.

Like so many others, I was struggling to decide between the 11” and 13” M4 iPad Pro. I was upgrading my 12.9” M1 iPad Pro and ordered both new sizes to test after reading all the discussion threads.

A lot of people seem to be going with the 11” and making the case that it offers the best balance of function and portability. I respect the 11” lifestyle and was tempted myself by the compact size and light weight. But in the end, I realized that I couldn’t resist the pull of the 13”.

Both are great products, and those who have a clear affinity for the 11” will be very happy with their choice. That said, I think that those who are on the fence should take the plunge on the 13” and that the trade offs are well worth it for most people.

Here’s why I think the 13” is still the king of iPads and the best choice for most people:

  • Thinner & lighter form factor - When Apple removed the bezels from the 12.9” in 2018, it become a much better general purpose device. The 2024 model takes another leap in this direction, making the 13” easier to hold in your hands. With the new 13”, you gain a much bigger screen compared to the 11” without adding much weight. Even those who only use the iPad as a handheld tablet for media consumption now arguably have a better experience with the 13”
  • More immersive screen & speakers - for watching shows or movies in bed, the 13” is simply more immersive and just as easy to rest on your chest or a pillow for long periods. The speakers are noticeably louder and clearer than the 11”. The 11” just seemed small after getting used to the 12.9” for the last 5 or so years.
  • Full-size keyboard - I’m typing this on the 13” Magic Keyboard and it feels fantastic. I found the 11” Magic Keyboard very usable but not as comfortable for long form writing.
  • More portable than you think - neither iPad Pro fits into your pocket. Both fit easily into most backpacks, messenger bags or slings. With the Magic Keyboard case, I can easily carry my iPad Pro around the neighborhood one-handed just like a professional leather folio. The matte black exterior is less obtrusive than carrying shiny aluminum MacBook and makes it feasible to carry without a bag.
  • Better Pro Max companion - with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is also lighter than the previous generation, I can now use my phone comfortably to read books, do email and get light work done. As phones get larger and take on more tablet use cases, it makes sense for tablets to get larger and take on more laptop use cases. Whether or not you also have a laptop or desktop, the 13” iPad makes more sense in a world of larger phones.
  • Sticker shock is temporary - yes, the extra $300 for the larger iPad and the extra $50 for the larger Magic does sting, but the life of your iPad will far outlast the hole in your wallet. It’s worth it to get the one that will give you the best and most immersive experience.
  • 13” FOMO will haunt your dreams - deep down, you know you want the 13”. You tell yourself that the 11” keyboard is good enough; that the “More Space” mode makes up for lack of screen estate; that you don’t mind squinting a bit when multi-tasking; that the speakers sound ok for the size; that Apple won’t announce more pro features at WWDC that take advantage of the 13” screen. But when you’re laying in bed at night, you’ll picture the glorious 13” OLED canvas and know in your heart that you deserve the top of the line iPad Pro.
I’m happy with my choice to stick with the larger size and think it’s a good move for anyone who is on the fence. The new 13” reduces the downsides of the larger size while keeping all the upsides. Anyone else happy with their choice to stick with or move to the 13”?
Quite a few of us have used 13 inch iPads because that is the only miniled iPads. we know the pros and cons very well, granted the 13 oled is lighter but it is still no where as light as the 11 esp if u include the case weight. To me, it’s a no brainer to get the 11.

I find neither to be particularly comfortable to hold as a one-handed tablet. Even two-handed… the 10.5” iPad Pro back in the day was excellent. So, for me, since neither was comfortable as a tablet, I went 12.9” and keep it in a keyboard case 95%+ of the time. I still use the 11” occasionally, when I yearn for smaller but that ship has likely sailed… especially since the camera is now placed awkwardly for portrait handheld use

edit: if they dropped Pro stuff into the mini, I’d get that in a heartbeat. As long as the camera remains in the correct location for it… portrait.

I had a 2018 12.9 and thought there was no way I could go with the 11. But after I got the M4 13 and it had kernel panics like crazy, I decided to return and thought I might try the 11--as I didn't really notice much of a weight difference between my 2018 and M4 (I know, there is a difference, but it was not super perceptible to me).

First thing I noticed was how much crazy bigger the 13 is side by side, so I thought there was no way I would be happy with the 11. But in actual usage so far, I haven't noticed the loss of the real estate. And the portability factor and weight difference was more noticeable.

Of course, I also have a 16 inch MBP, which I'm typing on now, so the delta in size between the laptop and tablet may make more sense for me.

I’m just in the passenger seat of our car right now on a long journey, MKB on my 11” Pro, and it’s absolutely brilliant.

I couldn’t imagine doing this with the 13”, as in, I could just bring my MBA for the bigger screen experience.

I’m watching Dark Matter whilst typing this. I’ve never really done this before, so it’s a novelty to me.

Same would apply on the train, tight spaces, the 11” and keyboard is perfect. Typing on this thing is so nice too! No problem with the key sizes. I’m not writing an essay anytime soon.

If you’re only using the iPad for content consumption the smaller 11” makes sense. If you do any photo or video editing the bigger screen is more useful and it still makes a great content consumption device.

Yeah definitely, it was my primary device used for work, 13” is the only way to go.

For light consumption and travel, 11” is great.

I don’t get “13” FOMO will haunt your dreams”, lol. I think it’s personal choice. Not everyone wish to have 13” size. You don’t have to look down other people’s choice to justify your purchase.
Agree. I have a 13 MacBook Air and compared in store with 15. I prefer portability. And still have good eyes. I don’t care who owns what.

I tried 11 and 12.9 M1 iPad Pro when I bought my iPP. 11 was too small for my use, I picked 12.9. I wanted 11 because I travel a lot. But in the end 12.9 isn’t a big deal for traveling. If I am upgrading in the future, I will get 13.

Agree. It goes both ways, I travel with 16 MBP M1 Max, don’t find it any more less portable than a 14 inch MBP. For some, smaller and lighter choices may be better option.

This thread is senseless: 2 sizes of iPad exist, specifically because there are different use cases.

Also: buying to models “just to give it a try” and ship one back is wasteful. Go to sla physical store, look at the display unit and make up your mind.

Sometimes it’s hard to make a decision when you’re just using it in the Apple Store vs using it with your own workflow and in your home / work / wherever, not to mention you can’t add all your personal stuff on those demo units to try out. That’s why consumer protection laws exist, to allow consumers to make an informed decision!

Normal, the 2018 is half way between the M1/M2 and the M4 in terms of weight

Personally I can't choose between the 2 sizes, I want both. But I don't need both from the same generation. My 2018 11" (1TB 6GB RAM) is great and I have no intention to replace it anytime soon.
As for the 12.9 I have been a big fan since 2015. The 2018 model was a huge jump, shaving 100gr from the weight of the 2015 (from 730 to 630gr). I sold my 2015 and got the 2018.
The M1 increased the weight by 50gr to 680gr, and the thickness.
So I got it but I kept the 2018 as an ereader for the times when I need something lighter.
Why not use the 11"? The 11" is great for ebooks, even the mini is great for that. But for PDFs and Word files (that's what I read the most), it's very cramped.
Now that the M4 is even lighter, shaving 100gr from the M1 and 50gr from the 2018, I am considering selling the 2018 12.9 and replacing it with the M4 as an ereader, no magic keyboard and no 5G since I'll keep the M1 with MK and 5GB.

I went from an 11 iPP M1 to the 13 M4 and am really glad I did. It’s better for my use case and I have absolutely no problems using off the keyboard as a regular tablet. Once I got used to the size difference it’s amazing to me what an immersive experience it is versus my smaller tablet.

The best part about having options is that there is no right or wrong answer; you use what works for you, and you don’t have to convince or argue about which one is the ”best” one. The best iPad is the one that meets your needs.

Serious question what will you be able to accomplish on the m4 that you couldn’t on the m1?
Not sure why people keep bringing this up. If someone wants to but a product, whether for the processor or another reason, let them? The bigger package of upgrades amounts to more than individual ones for some people

I decided to return my 11 and get the 13. I realized that portability is not even an option with my 11 since I don’t carry bags that large in my daily life. That is what my mini is for. The 13 will be a laptop replacement for me and a place to display my guitar music with zooming and squinting.

You don’t need to add your personal stuff and common apps like the browser, word processing and various other apps are on the devices.

Sure I can see that no one really needs to, but some may just need to use it more extensively than they can in the Apple Store to figure out which size suits them better! Plus I feel like there are tons of folks that may just not have an Apple Store near them, or the time to drive some time out of their way!

Coming from all of the other 12.9” iPad pro’s, I decided to try the 11” this time around… and while it worked better as a tablet, I realized that it wasn’t small enough as the portable tablet that I wanted and that I missed the sheer size of the larger pro. I would probably own a 13” Pro and an iPad Mini Pro if they ever made one.
