I’ve had both the 12.9” and 11” over the years. I definitely prefer the 11” in terms of portability. I’ve noticed the 12.9” (now the 13”) is much too big for the surfaces I used it on at work, school, airplanes, etc. For a bigger screen, I’ve used my MacBook Pro.

This thread is hilarious. Passionate users on both sides sizes of the spectrum! Nothing is as indicative on this topic as the years-old, multi-thousand vote 11” vs. 12.9” poll which is still to this day split down the middle within a couple of votes.

They’re both incredible devices, and I’d own one of each if my iPad usage was frequent enough. I really do think for general recommendations it’s as easy as “Tablet first? Supplementary / secondary device? Get the 11” and “Laptop first? Primary mobile computing device? Get the 13” but there are exceptions abound and the larger size is certainly more compelling than ever with the weight reduction this year.

Serious question what will you be able to accomplish on the m4 that you couldn’t on the m1?
Easy answer, for the 13" have a comfotable reading device that I can hold in one hand (pencil in the other).
Also paired with the new and improved folio (now with multiple angles) more confortable device to hold and more flexible in terms of viewing angles (almost like a kickstand)

I’m an 11 incher, I use my tablet at work to remote into my PC and program and troubleshoot plc’s while on the production floor. Better than carrying around a heavy laptop. On top of this I can pull up Electrical schematics in files really easy. This year I tried going with the 13 inch because I thought I’d be able to carry it around a lot easier than the older 12.9 inch. But after a 4 day trial it turned out to be too cumbersome still. I’d kill for an in between 12 inch tablet. None the less it was definitely a lot easier to use the 13 inch this year with the dropped weight. Can’t go wrong either way! But I mostly use my tablets handheld walking around. Rarely at the desk since the dual monitors make programming easier.

Sold my 11” iPad Pro which I loved and bought the 13” M4 Pro…and am so glad with my choice 🤩

However, it has made me regret part exchanging my iPad Mini for the Samsung Galaxy Tab Ultra…which was a bit of an experiment with android 🤨

Im so happy with the new M4 Pro I’ve decided to sell the Ultra and buy another iPad Mini…then all will be fine in the universe!

Many scientific studies show that larger displays tend to be significantly more productive. In one study of University of Utah it was shown that increased display from 18 inch to 24 inch reduced the time to finish tasks in 50%.

It is of course to you decide if the increased price, weight, pays off.

i think I’ve lost my mind and traded in both my M1 12.9 and iPad mini for a M4 13” regular display and am going to keep an 11” nano display M4 for on the go. Even in my apartment, which gets west facing unopposed light for 5-6 hours, the regular glossy screen can be a strain. I also just spent 3 hours reading on the nano display poolside and didn’t feel the strain I get with the regular iPad or iPhone. Not to mention it was so easy to hold up for a while

Despite the new upgrades, I still think it's simple and based on your primary usage:

13" for laptop replacement
11" for tablet

As a pro user, I need to carry my MacBook so the iPad is truly the 3rd device and for that reason I chose the 11".

All usual keys are in full size so normal typing 11” and 13” doesn’t feel much difference. Some symbol keys on 11” size are squished, but I think those doesn’t affect most people. YMMV.

I have both the 11” and 12.9” versions of the m1 iPad Pro, both with Magic Keyboard cases. While, as Shirasaki points out, the keys themselves are the same on both keyboards, the spacing between the keys is not. The distance between the left edge of the “Q” key and the right edge of the “P” key on the 11” is about 6 and 15/16ths inches. On the 12.9 that measurement is 7 and 3/8ths inches, which happens to match the spacing on my 13” M2 MacBook Air as well as the external keyboard I have for my office setup.

The nearly half an inch difference makes switching from a truly full-sized Mac keyboard and the iPad’s Magic Keyboard much easier on the larger iPad, in being able to touch type accurately and for avoiding strain on my wrists. The keyboard is the primary reason I added the 12.9 to the fleet.

Before getting the 12.9” iPad, I had to take the MBA with me when on the road. I just couldn’t be productive hunting and pecking on the smaller keyboard. That sounds like an exaggeration, but it had a significant effect. With the 12.9” I can just take the iPad.

Also, the larger text size on the 12.9” iPad can be useful in accommodating visual impairments such as macular degeneration or poorly managed presbyopia.

Like so many others, I was struggling to decide between the 11” and 13” M4 iPad Pro. I was upgrading my 12.9” M1 iPad Pro and ordered both new sizes to test after reading all the discussion threads.

A lot of people seem to be going with the 11” and making the case that it offers the best balance of function and portability. I respect the 11” lifestyle and was tempted myself by the compact size and light weight. But in the end, I realized that I couldn’t resist the pull of the 13”.

Both are great products, and those who have a clear affinity for the 11” will be very happy with their choice. That said, I think that those who are on the fence should take the plunge on the 13” and that the trade offs are well worth it for most people.

Here’s why I think the 13” is still the king of iPads and the best choice for most people:

  • Thinner & lighter form factor - When Apple removed the bezels from the 12.9” in 2018, it become a much better general purpose device. The 2024 model takes another leap in this direction, making the 13” easier to hold in your hands. With the new 13”, you gain a much bigger screen compared to the 11” without adding much weight. Even those who only use the iPad as a handheld tablet for media consumption now arguably have a better experience with the 13”
  • More immersive screen & speakers - for watching shows or movies in bed, the 13” is simply more immersive and just as easy to rest on your chest or a pillow for long periods. The speakers are noticeably louder and clearer than the 11”. The 11” just seemed small after getting used to the 12.9” for the last 5 or so years.
  • Full-size keyboard - I’m typing this on the 13” Magic Keyboard and it feels fantastic. I found the 11” Magic Keyboard very usable but not as comfortable for long form writing.
  • More portable than you think - neither iPad Pro fits into your pocket. Both fit easily into most backpacks, messenger bags or slings. With the Magic Keyboard case, I can easily carry my iPad Pro around the neighborhood one-handed just like a professional leather folio. The matte black exterior is less obtrusive than carrying shiny aluminum MacBook and makes it feasible to carry without a bag.
  • Better Pro Max companion - with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is also lighter than the previous generation, I can now use my phone comfortably to read books, do email and get light work done. As phones get larger and take on more tablet use cases, it makes sense for tablets to get larger and take on more laptop use cases. Whether or not you also have a laptop or desktop, the 13” iPad makes more sense in a world of larger phones.
  • Sticker shock is temporary - yes, the extra $300 for the larger iPad and the extra $50 for the larger Magic does sting, but the life of your iPad will far outlast the hole in your wallet. It’s worth it to get the one that will give you the best and most immersive experience.
  • 13” FOMO will haunt your dreams - deep down, you know you want the 13”. You tell yourself that the 11” keyboard is good enough; that the “More Space” mode makes up for lack of screen estate; that you don’t mind squinting a bit when multi-tasking; that the speakers sound ok for the size; that Apple won’t announce more pro features at WWDC that take advantage of the 13” screen. But when you’re laying in bed at night, you’ll picture the glorious 13” OLED canvas and know in your heart that you deserve the top of the line iPad Pro.
I’m happy with my choice to stick with the larger size and think it’s a good move for anyone who is on the fence. The new 13” reduces the downsides of the larger size while keeping all the upsides. Anyone else happy with their choice to stick with or move to the 13”?
I can't believe I just read this. I was settled on the 11" and now this... which is all stuff I had thought of. Now I'm on the fence again and not sure whether to go with the 11" or 13".

I have a 14” M3 MacBook Pro, but I still got the 13” M4 iPad Pro. I briefly considered the 11” since I was coming from the 2020 12.9” which was indeed a bit too heavy.

I could not be happier with the 13”. The weight reduction is noticeable, and the OLED screen really pops. It’s great that people aren’t forced into the larger size to get the best screen, but for those looking to maximize the OLED experience then the 13” is certainly the way to go. You don’t sacrifice much portability in my opinion.

Not sure why people keep bringing this up. If someone wants to but a product, whether for the processor or another reason, let them? The bigger package of upgrades amounts to more than individual ones for some people
Not what this thread is about and it’s not really a serious question.
I don’t frequent these forums as often as some people. Is it a sensitive topic to ask why one should upgrade a tech device, on a tech enthusiast forum?

13” for me

also fits well in my device lineup
24” iMac - 13’ iPad Pro - regular iPhone

i prefer the bigger screen, with one exception which is when I’m on a flight

My last flights didn’t even use my iPad on the plane, there was iPads in the seat backs used them.
Was only 6 hours though, have a big trip soon 21 hours flying each way.
You saying the 12.9/13 is too big for tray table width? can’t see it would matter that much v a 11” .
Not like a laptop some use.

it’s more that the Magic Keyboard is too long so you sit too close to the tablet
its why I was thinking getting a folio for on flights

I don’t take my iPad out of the house so it’s an easy choice for me - I’ll be getting the 13” Air so I have more screen space to do stuff.

I never use my iPads as laptop replacement and still I use the 13" at least as much as the 11"... (both have magic keyboards but both are mainly used without (no case either) most of the time)

11 inch tablet and 13 inch laptop replacement. People like it black and white.

It really is a choice based on numerous parameters where the importance of each parameter is individual.

For me: be able to see screen and interact with a pencil during lecturing and correcting reports points me towards the 13 inch. For home: I prefer the larger canvas for movies and games. Eye sight is not what it was either...

The lower weight of the new 13 inch pro is however impressive and might attract some that prefer 11 inch.

I personally can't comfortably use the 13 in my couch or bed without struggling to hold it so had to go with the 11.
