So if I deleted a lot of music from my 2013 MBP to free up space I'm screwed? I was deleting files because the 251 gigs of memory was nearly used up. I legit only have like 15 gigs left and my software is macOS Sierra.

Can you believe I'm still contemplating returning my M1? The more I read about the rumored 14 inch with a redesign the more I am tempted. So if I keep it I can "rent" this one until that is out and cut my losses when I sell the M1 13" MBP through whatever outlet. I'm incredibly torn because I'm losing patience and I want a new laptop (especially when I compare it with the speed of my 2013 MBP but I'm usually the type of person that buys things to keep. Argh... this is so frustrating. I hate being impatient.

Well, if you delete any, there not there to copy across, so it’s six and half a dozen really. I take it you don’t have an external drive/sd card/usb or something you could use as interim storage until you get your new Mac?

I know how you feel with the likelihood of a redesigned systems on the horizon, well 12-24 months. But it’s a very personal choice. Personally I know I’ll be just as happy with my 13” Air.

There’s always something new on the horizon, you’ve just got do decide when the best jumping off point for you is and be happy with your choice. I’ve little doubt my M1 will last quite a few years before I consider replacing it.

Of course, there’s always the option of selling up when the redesigns are coming up. Though I’d keep an eye on rumours for the timeline, it’s likely best to sell a current MacBook M1 before the general public become aware of redesigns and the price drops a little.

Mine has just shipped, so I now have the exciting waiting period.

I actually love this part!

When the new models are released, I’ll buy one.

I’m not alone then, oh don’t get me wrong, I’m not exactly known for my patience. But I do absolutely love the build-up, the anticipation and excitement. I’m kind of glad I don’t get mine until Christmas for that reason.

It’s weird in a way, after so many years of computers being much the same, bar the operating systems. Now, there’s a real, tangible difference between platforms again, and from the many many articles I’ve read, and videos I’ve watched, the M1 would seem to be something to be excited for again.

Who can be more embarrassing than me?

I’m coming from a 2008 iMac!

I’ve almost pushed the button on numerous occasions, but just never bothered. However, these new M1 Macs look solid.

So, what system are you coming from?
If everybody bought products with a frequency like you do, this world would be incredibly less polluted, society would be less egoistic and egocentric.
So nothing to be embarrassed about, really. Just be proud!!

Yesterday I picked up the base MBP with a 20% discount, but today I managed to get hold on a basemodel MBA for the same discount. I haven't opened it yet, but I'm really tempted to go with the MBA. The thought of having such a great machine for such a great price, is really tempting. I am coming from a MBP i5 (8gb/256 late 2019.
Almost exhausted from decision-making.

I have always come from the pro shaped machines laptop wise, 17” then 13” then 16” .

i was struggling with the same decision, for me personally, this will be the only time, i will probably own the MBA shape, in my life, 2020, will possibly be the year it was the strongest, or one of the strongest machines in the lihe up, in a shape not generally associated with “pro” machines.

So, for me, at least for a bit, i am going to see why everyone’s raves about their sloped design.

A Late 2013 6-core Mac Pro, lol... Looking at the raw benchmarks, the M1 Mac Mini is going to run around twice the speed for just under a quarter of the price. That’s pretty wild

(Would like more RAM, and 10GBe, but can wait for next year’s M2 for that. In the meantime, can’t wait for it to arrive!)

Had a 2013 MBP 13' which died on me about 5 weeks ago (hard drive was fried). Got an M1-MBA 8GB/512GB ($1,249) 8 days ago.

If Apple releases a redesigned MBP 13' with 4 ports this year, I’ll trade-in the M1-MBA.

Really itching on trading my five month-old baseline mid-2020 MBP 13" i5/8 GB RAM/256 GB SSD for the equivalent base M1 MBP 13". I would've pulled the trigger during the week of Black Friday when these were on sale but didn't due to the purchase of both an iPad Pro 11" that's currently being shipped and an iPhone 12 Pro on order. I could wait till these go on sale again by next month, maybe hold-off till the announcement of the rumored 14" mini-LED models, but definitely I'd want to trade ASAP and get the max value of my i5 MBP (which is valued at $700 from Apple).

Tradng my 2107 21.5” iMac for a 2020 M1 MBA.
No complaints at all about my iMac but looking forward to the portability again (plus external display).
Considered keeping it but I couldn’t justify it based on my habits and needs.
I am considering not sending it as trade and giving it to my daughter instead but that remains to be seen.

Are you struggling with the base alternatives if both? Or the base MBP and 8/8 core 512 mb og MBA?

Being that my current Mac is a 2008 iMac, I’m even more excited.

Im just patiently waiting for it to arrive, now.

Really looking forward to everything about this laptop. I’ve only owned a laptop for a very short time before, so that will be new. I’m on an extremely old version of macOS, so Big Sur will be new. And of course the M1 will be new.

Really excited.

I waited for my 12 Pro Max, and that was worth it. Therefore, I hope this wait will be worth it.

What did you order? I went with the MBP 16 512.

You’ve definitely got a lot to look forward to, and love there. I’ve not had a laptop since the 15” was released with the TouchBar, and I only had that less than 6 months as I developed a complete hatred for the TouchBar. Though everyone has different opinions on that.

I didn’t really get much in the way of choosing this time around. It’s a present from my folks for Christmas, yeah it’s ridiculous, I’ll be 46 come Christmas Eve and the wife’s just turned 36. But my parents still insist on going a bit mental for Christmas presents, birthday presents, because they were out shopping presents, any bloody excuse presents.

We’ve tried talking them out of it many times - I’ve been trying most of my life, but that just ends up in an argument. They did ask for some guidance though, so I’m almost entirely certain it’s a MacBook Air 512GB, I’d expect 8G of RAM.

Usually I’m a bit of a RAM freak, but this time I don’t see 8GB being an issue. At least from the ridiculous amount of videos and articles I’ve been through. It’ll cope with my needs just fine.

As for the laptop form factor, you’ll love going back to it, I think. There’s just that element of freedom, taking it anywhere you like. I miss working in the garden in the summer - I work from home anyway, even pre-pandemic.

I’ve already got a new 28” 4K monitor and TB3 hub sitting on my desk in preparation. Don’t get me wrong, I can work on a 13” screen quite happily most of the time. But sometimes, particularly when programming, I like a bit more real estate.

.... And I’m waffling on, I do apologise, see signature :D

Almost the same age as me :) .

That’s a nice present you’ll be getting. I hope you’ll be getting your parents something nice in return.

To be honest, I’m a bit concerned that 13” may be a bit too small. The 15” (pre Touch Bar) that I had was sold because I found the 24” iMac much better to edit photos on. That was my thing back then, so I sold the laptop. However, I’ll now be using the M1 MBP for many things, and I’ve mostly been using my 11” iPad Pro, so hopefully it will be big enough.

I’ll be interested in seeing the new redesign next year.

Did anybody answer this because I really want to know this too!
I copied all of the files from my 2014 Mac mini (SSD) to an external SSD drive via USB 3. About 5200 files and 50+ GB.

I then went to my MacBook Pro M1 and connected it using a USB-C to USB 3 connector cable.

I imported the music into Music (formerly known as iTunes). It was so fast I thought I had not selected all of the music on the external drive - the popup showing import progress went away in under a minute. When Iscrolled down through the Album list in iTunes, all of he albums appeared. 50+ GB copied from external SSD via USB3 to M1 SSD in under a minute.

But what I really wanted to do was import the songs but not copy to the internal SSD (I deliberately chose the 256 GB SSD for the M1 MBP).

So I selected all of the files that got copied to the M1 MBP SSD Music folder and deleted them. Again, this took less than a minute, much faster than it would take if I deleted the same amount / size of files from my 2014 Mac mini with SSD.

I then changed the setting in Music to import but not copy files to hard drive (Music preferences -> Files tab -> de-select "Copy files to Music Media folder when adding to library"). I again imported, but this time the files were not copied to the M1 MBP SSD. I then played an entire album, chosen at random. Even though the music only existed on the external drive, the playback was the same as if the files were loaded from the internal SSD - I did not notice any skips, delays, or other playback issues.

Happy with your choice?

How comes you never went with another MBP?
Well, I'm not an heavy user, and I didn't use it to work. (Plus, between 2014 and 2018 (?) I also had a beefy gaming-PC at home.) That's also why I went for the base-specs MBA.

So far so good, but let's see what the next chipsets will offer in terms of graphical performance... maybe there'll be a day when it will be actually possible to play proper videogames on an Apple laptop! ;)

I just ordered a M1 MacBook Air, 16gb ram, 512gb that will be here late this month. I'm coming from a 2012 MBP 13" i7 that's been upgraded to an SSD and 16GB. It's been an excellent computer, but it's starting to have some weird errors that I can't track down, but I'm thinking they are related to the logic board. It will no longer hibernate, under any circumstances, and will sometimes wake up with an EFI error.

Honestly, if it wasn't having problems, I would just stick with it. It does everything I need and more.

I have a 1070x, 1070 32 Gb of ram 8 tb of ssds, triple 1440 desktop I use. And will continue to use.

laptop wise I have dell 6th gen inspiron (45 watt i7, 960m, 16gb ram, 512 gb ssd, 1tb ssd, 15 ‘4K display)
and 8th gen Inspirons (i5 8250u, 16gb ram, 500 gb ssd, 13“)I am going to sell.

I was not happy in general with either of these windows laptops, battery life was terrible and heat was an issue with both for thermals.

I ordered a base air to replace them, last Mac os product I owned was a 2008 unibody I stopped using in 2012. Ideally i will try to upgrade this every 2-4 years and use the windows desktop less.

I have had a 3rd gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro for over half a year and I love it, even if I use it mainly for ebooks and pencil input.
