Was able to sell my 2017 Base Pro 13" for $750 and then bought the M1 Base MBA for $899 (student discount and no tax in NH!). That $150 difference has been well worth it for the battery, improved keyboard, and, of course, the speed!

Who can be more embarrassing than me?

I’m coming from a 2008 iMac!

I’ve almost pushed the button on numerous occasions, but just never bothered. However, these new M1 Macs look solid.

So, what system are you coming from?
apple hater since 2008, I've never owned any Apple product and felt proud antil I saw that damn M1 chip performance. I'm humbled and excited to own my first Macbook Pro coming from a windows born world! .

I’m still using a MacBook Pro 13” early 2011 and ordered a base model MacBook Air M1 with RAM upgraded to 16GB today.

The 2011 was a really good companion. It survived a 2 meters drop within a bag in 2013. It was dented and I had to pop the screen back into the frame but it worked till today. I changed the HDD cable 2 times, one of its weak points. I upgraded the hard drive to a ssd.
now the battery is failing with 1357 circles. I had to choose to get a new battery for 100€, or get a new MacBook.
I decided for the latter. The 2011 was really slow for the last 2 years. It was acceptable but not convenient anymore. I started to use my gaming rig for office stuff and my iPhone XR for browsing. I’m looking forward to enjoy the new OS X. :)

I was windows user almost my whole life. 2010 I build a hackintosh and a year later I bought a MacBook Pro. I’m still using Windows for gaming and some office stuff but it’s a chore for everything else.
Mac has much better programs for everything. Like bear... try to get something like this on Windows. Or pdf expert pro. On Mac everything is more intuitive and more beautiful. I love my Windows gaming rig. But just for gaming.

My late 2016 MBP died (SSD failure) in early October, which was pretty good timing. I am replacing it with a maxed out MBA for less than I paid for the MBP four years ago (which had 16GB memory and 1 TB SSD). My favourite Mac was a 2011 MBA so I am pleased to be going back to an MBA.

Have a Mid-2012 MacBook Air 1.8 i5/8GB.
I thought about replacing it 2-3 years ago, but realised my old PC made a really stable Hackintosh (Quad Core i5/32GB RAM, RX560), so that put off any upgrade for a while.

To be honest the hackintosh still seems really, really quick to me, and its based on a 2013 iMac. God knows how fast the new M1 will be.

Late 2015 5K iMac. Come Christmas, I’ll be abandoning it in favour of my MacBook Air. Already bought a new 4K monitor, TB3 dock and desk stand for the Air, for when I need to sit at my desk to use a big screen.

Bloody torture having to wait all the way to Christmas, to play with my new toy.... Although the wife’s bought me a Lego N.E.S for Christmas, so it’s going to be a nightmare decision then too

..... Yes I am a big child, but y’know, autism and all that, that’s my excuse 😂

2019 MPB16. Not really "coming from", though, it will be a system that I use in parallel. This 16" has 64GB RAM for virtualisation (some Linux server & Windows testing), which is a different use case. The M1 mini I ordered will be used for testing M1 in practice for my company and to use as a general desktop.

I bought a 2020 MBP M1 (8 GB memory, 256 GB SSD) to replace a 2010 MBP 17" (8 GB memory, 512 GB SSD).

Very happy with the M1 MBP, also still like the 2010 MBP 17".

I bought my 2010 MBP 17" earlier in the year to tide me over until I saw an M1 I wanted. The battery needs replacing so I was able to negotiate with the seller on eBay to get it for $292 (including shipping). It had the original HDD so I spent $55 to get a new SSD, and I will probably get a new battery from Otherworld Computing since I still want to get some use out of it.

It works well for a $357 purchase. :)

Replaced a mid 2015 15" i7(2.5 GHz, dGPU) Macbook Pro. Sold that for an amount of money which payed for about 2/3 of the price of the M1 Macbook Pro (256 GB, 8GB) model I bought. I always seem to prefer the smaller laptops (used to have a 12" Powerbook G4 once and fondly remembering that) and as such, the 15" was too large for my liking anyhow. Fun-fact: this 13" Macbook Pro is only very slightly larger and quite a bit lighter than that old 12" Powerbook.

I can't say that the performance difference in daily usage is day and night, but one thing that immediately shows is that the M1 has a much better GPU than even the dedicated Radeon R9 M370X in the old mid 2015 machine. This thing makes playing games quite feasible.

And the battery life is stellar; more comparable to what I'm used to from my iPad than from any laptop I've owned.

Macbook Pro esc 2016 to Macbook Pro 16GB 1TB. I overall like my current device but definitely underpowered for my work. Pretty much going with m1 as a guinea pig in an enterprise environment that's 70% mac / 20% win / 10% linux.

I also look forward to experiencing the latest version of MacOS again. Haven’t been able to update for a few years, as my iMac is so old.

Have also been holding out for Apple silicon.

Enjoy!
Would you mind sharing your experience on older MacOS, which one was it? Did the apps run at all or was there some workaround? Considering my first Mac I’m interested in how many years they are potentially useful after the updates stop
